the runway was extended in 2000 to 2 781, partially over pillars, the terminals were rebuilt to what we have today.... I believe the single accident there was with the TAP Boeing 727-200 in 1977 with 131 deceased and 33 injured. A memorial was built where the plane exploded

That old runway was a postage stamp. You can still see the old one - which is already after the first extension. It's still very visible if you know what to look for. It ends basically after the buildings. 😮 Talk about tiny. Even nowadays the pilots prioritize just stopping the plane over stopping it very smoothly.

Driving away from the airport, one can see how amazing this runway is. From the highway, it resembles an elevated city highway perched on a forest of concrete pillars at least 50 metres high. On take-off, there is no soaring climb into the air, just a continuing gentle climb as the wheels leave the ground and the rocky coastline replaces it under the wings.

I have worked for Boeing (named Spirit Aerosystems since 2005) in Wichita, Ks since 1986. I've held many jobs over the years including Trim and Drill Mechanic, Tooling, Quality Investigator, Shop Manager and for the last 28 years, Research and Development. I've worked on DBT's (Design Build Teams), now called IPT's (Integrated Product Teams) for nearly every new aircraft and derivative since 1993. I've been involved with work on the 737 Classic, 737 NG and now the 737 MAX for my entire career out here, well, along with 777, 787, 767 and now Airbus A220 and new Defense projects since we now do work for other customers after Boeing sold us. Anyway, I love the 737's and really enjoy watching videos like this. I will say, your videos are truly amazing with the quality video equipment and all the details that pop up and the flight maps, etc. Thanks for all your hard work on the videos and thanks for sharing. Take care

Last year I flew from Gatwick to Funchal. 30 knot crosswinds at Funchal developed en route and we were diverted to Port Santo, where we sat for two hours. The gusts didn't abate and we flew all the way back to Gatwick, arriving around midnight and a two-hour wait for a fairly pointless hotel room, only to get up again at 5am for a 7am rematch.

Sadly, happens a lot with Madeira. Sometimes, it's possible to brave the winds. Other times... well, lives are more important than to attempt something. If they close the airport, it's because it was necessary.

Another terrific video Michelle, thanks. I've flown to Funchal twice in recent years, landing on that same runway. Neither were as pleasant as your arival. The first time was best described as alarming with gusting and windshear so the aircraft was slewing from side to side quite violently on the run in. We were expecting a 'go around', but eventually the pilot just dropped it quite heavily as soon as he was over the runway. Wish you'd been driving 🤣. The take off is also interesting with dropping the starboard wing and banking right as soon as airborne. In fairness the pilot had warned us that this would happen, necessary due to the terrain ahead. Love all your videos which are so well produced, edited and so much information on screen....thanks again.

I'm from Madeira. I've landed there a few times. As long as the plane stops safely, it can hit the track hard. I don't care for the bump, that's why we have the seatbelts. That being said, I must say I never had a bad experience. The pilots flying to Madeira usually know what they are doing.

Very cool...thanks again. Got to land here in a B737-300 simulator...they failed the flight director so I had to land it like a 172. Got it done...and they treated me different after that. Scared my wife though...and she never went back.

First time a went to Madeira (as a passenger) was in 1979 from Birmingham (EGBB) in a 737-200, made a refuelling stop at Santiago de Compostela (LEST) then on to Madeira before the runway was extended over the road. Coming back a short flight to Porto Santo for fuel before continuing to EGBB. Last time I tried to depart Madeira in March 2017 there were very strong gusty winds and no aircraft got in after 11:00 most diverting to the Canaries, my inbound flight diverted to Faro before going back home to Birmingham. Back to the hotel for me before successfully arriving home a day late.

Thank you Michelle for sharing your aviation journeys. I know Funchal is in the top 10 (if not top 5) of challenging airports and good to see this one from the front seat pov 👍🏼 Still want to hear the ATC comms, but great video and editing too, always good quality from you. Take care and wishing safe flying. All best ❤

I have sadly developed a fear of flying over the past 10 years. Before that i had lived in the USA, Spain, Greece and UK and flew regularly. This may sound a bit strange but watching this video has actually made me feel like i want to try to board a plane again. I'm not sure why the video made me feel better about it, maybe seeing how calm and relaxed the crew are and that its the not being able to see ahead syndrome that gets to me. Thank you.

I remember landing at the old airport 40 years ago. Even hairier than that. Ask any really old colleagues. Take off weight severly restricted. Rolling turn and away then a landing at Porto Santo to refuel. Those were the days 😊

@@gamma_dablam I thought it was nearear to Funchal. As it was 40+ years ago my memory may be faulty. When I visited last September I was amazed at the new roads, bridges and general expansion of Funchal. I wont wait another 40 years!

You know, that runway used to be much shorter. It was prolonged in the 90's I think. Before that, planes had to apply strong brakes and reversers in order to stop in time. I remember people would start applauding inside the plane, when it came to a halt. Nowadays is a much easier landing.....

I have been to Madeira a few times and never had any landing problems but a few of my friends have been on flights where the plane has had to make a couple of approaches, so they had to have a couple of pops ie, large brandies when they landed as it was a bit scary.

By the time sea water floods that runway half of europe will be flooded, you can go under the runway and look up, the columns are about 80m tall... At most it's at some minor risk of landslides, which are the main danger in a mountain terrain like we have here in Madeira.
