I have landed there several times always interesting, I remember as a kid in the 70's landing on the old runway in a TAP 727 felt like the pilot had the breaks on before the wheels touched the ground luggage fell out of the overheads people screaming....pilot was already turning around while we were still slowing down fun stuff.....
@mffmoniz29485 ай бұрын
That old runway was a postage stamp. You can still see the old one - which is already after the first extension. It's still very visible if you know what to look for. It ends basically after the buildings. 😮 Talk about tiny. Even nowadays the pilots prioritize just stopping the plane over stopping it very smoothly.
@denismckee4417 Жыл бұрын
Driving away from the airport, one can see how amazing this runway is. From the highway, it resembles an elevated city highway perched on a forest of concrete pillars at least 50 metres high. On take-off, there is no soaring climb into the air, just a continuing gentle climb as the wheels leave the ground and the rocky coastline replaces it under the wings.

Another terrific video Michelle, thanks. I've flown to Funchal twice in recent years, landing on that same runway. Neither were as pleasant as your arival. The first time was best described as alarming with gusting and windshear so the aircraft was slewing from side to side quite violently on the run in. We were expecting a 'go around', but eventually the pilot just dropped it quite heavily as soon as he was over the runway. Wish you'd been driving 🤣. The take off is also interesting with dropping the starboard wing and banking right as soon as airborne. In fairness the pilot had warned us that this would happen, necessary due to the terrain ahead. Love all your videos which are so well produced, edited and so much information on screen....thanks again.

I'm from Madeira. I've landed there a few times. As long as the plane stops safely, it can hit the track hard. I don't care for the bump, that's why we have the seatbelts. That being said, I must say I never had a bad experience. The pilots flying to Madeira usually know what they are doing.
@VickersDoorter Жыл бұрын
Last year I flew from Gatwick to Funchal. 30 knot crosswinds at Funchal developed en route and we were diverted to Port Santo, where we sat for two hours. The gusts didn't abate and we flew all the way back to Gatwick, arriving around midnight and a two-hour wait for a fairly pointless hotel room, only to get up again at 5am for a 7am rematch.
@mffmoniz29485 ай бұрын
Sadly, happens a lot with Madeira. Sometimes, it's possible to brave the winds. Other times... well, lives are more important than to attempt something. If they close the airport, it's because it was necessary.

Had some very sketchy landings there as a passenger in the late 80's before the runway was extended, you could tell which passengers were visiting for the first time as they'd be clapping as soon as the wheels hit the tarmac. I remember one particular landing when touchdown seemed way too late and I watched familiar markers going past the window much faster than usual, the people clapping must have sensed the unease of us seasoned visitors to the island, applause turned to silence very quickly. Great video we landed here 2 days ago our touchdown came with quite a thump a lady sat next to us had been here before when runway was shorter they had to abort landing and go round again. Airport was lovely and clean we are really enjoying Madera is a great place gardens are beautiful.

Loved this approach! You make it look so easy. What a beautiful view for an airport!!!! Thanks for the pro editing (I know it takes a lot of work) and for sharing with us!

I thought that the video format was fantastic. The information popping up discreetly was well done. Much better than just another approach video. Your heart stopping beauty makes it even better.

Thank you Michelle for sharing your aviation journeys. I know Funchal is in the top 10 (if not top 5) of challenging airports and good to see this one from the front seat pov 👍🏼 Still want to hear the ATC comms, but great video and editing too, always good quality from you. Take care and wishing safe flying. All best ❤

The thermals on the land side (left) during final are an interesting addition to the challenging approach!

Thank you, for taking us along, dear. This was super enjoyable ! Never knew this small island is so built-up and with so many facilities.

Very informative videos well done so the average person can see and understand what pilots go through to get us all safely to our destinations. Thank you for all that you do.

lmfao no pilot actually watches this. There is something called flight school for professionals, but your brain just goes to youtube and thinks you are some kind of expert.

Nice to have this view. In real life I've seen this from a passenger seat once. Also it's a very good island to walk if you're getting to old for much climbing. Walking along the "levada's" (water canals for irrigation) is also very nice and not really challenging...this on contrary to an isle as La Palma. No , it's not suitable for rollator or wheel chair, those paths....)

I remember visiting Ponta Delgada in the 1980’s. The passengers would all hold their Rosaries during landing. The breaking was so severe everything on the floor would be catapulted down the aircraft. The terminal building was like a wooden shed. I recall that the runway had a cliff at the end of it - hence the breaking. It was a strange place. The toilets in the bars were overflowing and soaking into the carpets in the bar. They had a festival going on. The girls were crawling around the square on their knees and the illuminations looked lethal. Thank goodness we had our RN trials ship on which we slept.

That's Azores, I believe. The other group of Portuguese islands. Probably also an interesting landing. The connection to the smaller islands is with smaller planes. Weather is usually challenging. As for the rosaries and girls on their knees. Yeahhh, us Portuguese folks are still on the very religious side.

@@mffmoniz2948 absolutely correct. It would have been in the early 80’s. I felt quite sorry for the Portuguese girls as it all seemed rather barbaric. It would be interesting to know how the island has changed. I was on the UK MoD trials ship RMAS Newton. The other island had a huge US airbase.
Gdy załoga podchodziła do lądowania, bałem się tak, jakbym sam siedział za sterami samolotu. Znakomity film, dziękuję bardzo 😊

What a great video, I love how you put the procedures and what is going on etc up on screen with tags to the controls/runway etc… VERY informative and interesting. Please don’t change this type of content 😊

I went there and we had so many go arounds that we had to land on an island near by and refuel and allow everyone to calm down. We then landed sideways. It was so terrifying that I cannot get on another plane.

I understand but you were obviously in good hands. Not all airports are like that. And Madeira isn't always like that. Don't give up on travelling.
