I love the fact you go back to older, affordable pieces of gear. It shows you’re not just along for the commercial ride of constantly upgrading gear. I love new gear, but delving into equipment that can actually help people make music without having to sell their car is why I love this channel.

@brunovalente2077

I tried Maschine Mk3 for just a few weeks and it was enough to get addicted to the workflow, it is really nice, basically exactly the same as the Maschine+ I think. The reason I don't have it now it is because I cant afford it, so I thought about the Mikro, thanks for your review really nice. I think this one makes us a little more dependent of the computer screen, but the Mk3 also makes you dependent, less, but still very present mainly when you want to edit patterns notes and whatever, the mikro has the performance controller side of it still very present for immediate creativity and a lot of information in a tiny screen. I do have the Komplete 12 and I think this could be the way to control it. Just one thing that I always think is that is missing some knobs, as I think it would be perfect to tweak those pre programmed NKS compatible macros. Maybe I could buy a M32 Keyboard also but then, you are about to pay the same money as a Mk3. Well I really think they failed missing that.
@brunovalente2077
@brunovalente2077 3 жыл бұрын
sorry, one more thing, and by what reason they failed to do a script for proper Ableton integration. I remember when I was trying the Mk3 that really putted me down, I think the Maschine Mk2 had, even the Maschine Jam, but not the Mk3, and apparently not the Mikro also. Another thing is why the hell all the lights are off in the buttons, you cant see nothing unless you have the room lights full on. They could have the inactive button dimmed and then lighted when activated. The Mk3 was like this, even in your video I can barely see the labels on it. Well sometimes the devil is in the details, and maybe one of the reason Native instruments is going down is beacuse they didnt care enough for the details. Another thing is missing in they big library of sounds its a proper labeling, why they never name the synths they multisample? Why cant you find a beat by genres, like techno, dubstep and so on, it is always by packs names like Carbon, Analog Dreams, Digital Nightmares ??

This is a very exciting and well spoken review. Thanks! Having what seems like a Maschine+ already in my S88 Mk 2, I wonder how well the Mikro interfaces with it. I don't like drumming on keys and so I'm looking for some pads. This seems like the ticket eh? Does the Maschine software "see" the Mikro any differently than it would any other generic pad controller? Also I would use it for orchestral toms, taikos, etc. in LADD, Damage 2, Symphonic Destruction, etc.

Just thinking the same - got my Maschine Mikro MK3 about 1 year ago used. Didn't think I needed yet another pad controller and I'd been using Komplete 13/14 for about 2 years. But HEY - it's still an awesome device an the size, functionality and Maschine 2 software remains very good. If, like me, you were reluctant to get into Maschine, get the Mikro and you won't regret it.

As you said, you get a solid music making hardware and a software. What else do I need ? Music is not only about having the best and most possible gears in your studio it’s about creativity. What I was a little humbled by when I bought mine (this also applies for the bigger MK3) was that it isn't quite as plug and play as their Komplete Kontrol Keyboards. What I was expecting was the crazy nice experience of an Komplete Kontrol Keyboard on a Drumpad/Drummachine. Just plug it in and your favorite Drum Libraries in Kontakt make neat lights on your disco dance pad for your fingers. That certainly didn't work which made me a bit sad especially since they seem to deliberately sort Libaries like Empire Breaks and Butch Vigs drums like a Pad. You are down to turning it into Midi mode which loses you the ability to use the Kontrol Features and then it's just a pad. Though it's pads are amazing so I'm holding onto mine aswell and hoping that NI will make the Machine Software as broadly instant compatible with anything like they did with the Keyboards and it's light guide and Controls. Since I am still learning the light guids make it so much easier to find the sounds on the pad for me so might not be much of an issue for everyone.

I have yet to pull the trigger on a Maschine (though I want to). I have Native Instruments M32 keyboard and that is a steal and great at my computer desk. (Fits on the under desk keyboard tray). So how do you like the NI Maschine Mikro MK3 vs the full sized MK3? Missing screens and to me more importantly the knobs and have to menu dive or how big of a break is it to pick up the mouse? Since the full sized MK3 being 2.4 the price of the Mikro MK3... but same workflow as your loaner of the MK 3+? When I finally get one, it will be for my home studio, so I’m still leaning towards the full sized MK3... but the MK3 Mikro is very very very interesting.... oh and check out the M32 keyboard from NI when you have time...:)

@GabeMillerMusic

The Circuit is definitely better for jamming, it's built for it... Launchpad style interface, easily accessible macro knobs, ability to swap between drastically different sections or even entire songs on the fly, ability to easily sequence external synths if you want it, etc. The Mikro can do a bit of jamming, but it's a lot less immediate and you don't have nearly as much control.

Interesting! How much can you do with the included software and how much do you need to spend on additional instruments, upgrade to a better version of Maschine, etc.? The Mikro always seemed to me as a means to lure you into the Native Instruments ecosystem where you'd then end up spending a lot of money to get the real features (I'm not at all opposed to spending money on software, just wondering about what you really need to spend to get a well-rounded set of features and sounds).
@GabeMillerMusic
@GabeMillerMusic 3 жыл бұрын
There's only one version of the Maschine DAW (with a ton of effects plugins built in), which you get with the Mikro. You also get Massive and Monark, and often a sound pack or two. So no, I'd say you don't spend extra to get "real features", you get those from the getgo. The one thing you'd probably find yourself spending more money in is soundpacks.

Great vid Gabe! Re: chopping samples... you still can't do it from the hardware encoder, can you? It's mouse-only still? Can't believe it. The Mikro MK2 can do it. The MK2 can... I don't know why anyone would consider the Mikro MK3 with this insane limitation (also the tiny screen).

I can't believe the micro 3 is so cheap. You can get it new for $270. The Maschine workflow is so intuitive. Once you get a micro you will want to get the larger mk3 because the workflow get even easier and you don't have to ever look at the computer. Then you will end up getting NI komplete because it goes on 50% sale every summer and you get over 36,000 sounds. The only mpc I tried was 1000 and I couldn't endure all of the button presses. It didn't make any sense to me.

Just ordered this unit last week. This will be a 1st for me as I've only used a keyboard and daw up till now. How about doing some tutorials?

there are many tutorials on how to use it or how to fingerdrum/ sample in general. If you really really want to know on how to take everything out of this thing it would be a great idea to master on how to combine it with your daw

Well yes, right now you can get one of those used for like 100, that is a fun device if you wanna try something new and yet well built. Much better than a used circuit or some pocket operator at least.

Maschine Mikro is great, but somewhat a commitment to NI software. I prefer the step sequencer, piano roll, sampler, etc in Logic - it’s just bigger, more capable, and no limitations. Are there a lot of Mikro users using it with Logic? Do the button and knobs map to Logic, or does it require custom mapping? (Not a big deal, really)

It should work fine, although I don't think it's optimized for M1.

Request review (related). The discontinued Native Instruments Maschine JAM. Around $300…. About the same they sold for new…. Basically adds more hands on for recording or live working. It looks like it might be OK on it’s own.. but really is to make a NI Maschine MK3 or MK3 Micro to add lots of other hands of feature and avoid menu diving or mousing…. For your layout though.. it’s physically the same size as a MK3…. So if you got a MK3.. double it side by side…. And it would stay home…. But might be worth it. I might order a used one even though yeah I should get a MK3 for MK3 Micro first….

Gah! I have been looking for a second device to supplement my OG Circuit. This device was one of the first that I researched half a year ago-and...thank you for reminding me Gabe. Maschine ecosystem buy-in for cheap-well...shoot. :-) (It fits underneath my cheesy Monitor stands-and has Tiny little displays-much to love

Gabe- I have an MPC One that is more a controller and pads for my software (laptop), but over the years I have amassed considerable NI vst stuff, even if I no longer have the keyboard or whatever it went with. To be less jarring would you think it better to get a Mikro for controlling that NI stuff, or a full mkiii second hand? Other than screens, footprint, and some dedicated controls what (if any) other major things are being given up that may make Mikro not as good of a choice?

It's hard to say without knowing exactly what you want to do, but in general, keep in mind that either Maschine works by far the best with the Maschine software. You're basically using it like a USB groovebox. If you don't mind working with the computer part of that, the Mikro will be fine. If you want a completely "DAWless" experience, you'll want to go for the full size one.

Is there a particular reason why you seem to never purchase or utilize the standard version of related gear? You chose the mc 101 over an mc 707... Can you explain please!
@GabeMillerMusic
@GabeMillerMusic 3 жыл бұрын
A few reasons: - I place a very high value on portability, so I can work on music on a whim anywhere (around the house, on lunch breaks from work, while travelling, etc). - When I started the channel as a young college student, buying expensive gear literally wasn't an option. I went for what I could afford/justify at the time, and that's worked out pretty well. - While the channel is doing well and I *can* afford more expensive gear, I am of the firm belief that quality music production doesn't have to be expensive and I want my videos to reflect that. Although I have been trying more expensive gear lately, including the Maschine+. - as for the MC-707... Stay tuned.

@@GabeMillerMusic Really appreciate the feedback Gabe! Also. I'm really hoping to see your approach to the MC 707. I actually anticipate your take on the MC 707 will be probably the best we've all seen thus far! All the best and thanks again.
