So... Native instruments just announced the Maschine Mikro MK3! I got my hands on a unit and this is me, taking a first look at it and talking about the positives as well as the negatives.
I am a long time, heavy Maschine user so my perspective is really not from a beginners standpoint in this video.

I've wanted an affordable way of getting into the Maschine workflow for a few months. As someone with no experience of Maschine, the Mikro MK3 will be a great way of doing that. I think the negative comments about this device are from people used to its big brother and I agree, why would you reduce your functionality if you already have the bigger Maschine but if you're just starting off, you won't miss anything.
@AccurateBeats

This is a great comment! I think you’re absolutely right with this one. Maschine mikro MK3 is created for people who wants an affordable way to get into the Maschine world. Not for users like myself. It is a great value considering the power of the software!
@RoomAtTheTopStudio

James Steer it's not just users of the bigger Maschine who are commenting negatively. If you already have a mark 2 then I can't see a reason to ditch it for this. Actually if the mark 2 is on sale for cheaper it actually makes sense to get a mark 2 to enter into the Maschine system. The pretty cosmetics doesn't really make this an upgrade in my opinion
@JamesSteerIsAwesome
@JamesSteerIsAwesome 5 жыл бұрын
true and if I already had the MK2 I probably wouldn't upgrade either, but for me as I am going for my first Maschine and as they currently both cost the same where I am, my preference is to go for the bigger pads and expression bar that the MK3 provides.

Exactly dude, if your new to maschine I would recommend it, especially with the cool stuff you can do with the touch strip. I've got the mikro mk2 and full MK3 but I still believe this is a lovely piece of hardware, even if personally I've outgrown it's features

As a Noob with pad controllers, I do appreciate your straight-to-the-point description of this unit. I bought one last year and I needed a sense of what its good for so now I'm just going to get to know it and the software for it. Other KZbinrs made this thing out to be a complex mystery so I avoided learning about it. You went right past all of that, thanks again.

Looks slick as hell, I'm the same as you when it comes to beats through, I like to get lost in the hardware with little to no use of my monitors. I still have the MK2 micro and she's always been a gem, it's what got me to fall in love with bestmaking and sample based production, shame they changed it but it's a different device that provides different benefits and drawbacks!

Great you get your hands on it right away to show us, liking your vids much! can’t wait to see it in action - without MK3 screens. As you said not for sampling, while that’s not my target use. I do like minimize space, but will be looking to automate one parameter at a time with single encoder. Either on Maschine tools or NKS. Would appreciate if you show if its easy to go between parameters and manipulate. Yes, while looking into computer screen or smaller laptop. I got Mikro Mk2 few weeks back, menu too cryptic. Returned, got full MK3, but it’s huge to the setup I’ll am using it. I love it as it is all great unit, intuitive flow. But don’t need an embedded audio interface and if can do the same job with one encoder without 8 I’d be happy

Thank you! I’ll make a video, showing off some of the stuff you’re talking about but I can tell you this: If you’re ok with using the computer a little to load effects and change between the modes you’ll love the Mikro MK3. Recording automation will feel a bit strange at first but I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it soon enough. Thanks for watching

Thank you for this great video. Very good comparison. I liked Mikro MK3 quite a lot and I think it is great for what it is made for. For $249 one cannot expect audio interface or high-res displays. I would have loved a bigger display, but I think since you've got to use it with computer, it should not be a problem to work with the software.

Good review. I’m an old Maschine adopter from mk1. Ive never upgraded my box and it’s been in storage for a few years. NI left it in the dust a long time ago as well and to be honest I’ve always been more comfortable with mouse and keys. BUT I like the option of pads when making beats. I spent a year or so learning the maschine workflow to see if I could make it work with my Ableton workflow and found it got in the way of me making music. I do have some investment in NI software which I use less and less but would like to start using again. I’m hesitant with buying any NI hardware since I’ve been burned by NI before with KORE the “ future “ of NI which they promptly abandoned and resurrected as their keyboard software with less functionality. Maschine seems to still be a huge part of the NI family so while I’m hesitant this looks like a good option for me. I don’t chop up samples much (and if I do I use Ableton) and I’d have easy access to my NI library again. The pads are still great. I like the control ribbon and chord features.The price is reasonable. While i would miss having the knobs easy access from the larger maschine I think I can live without them.

I have a Komplete Kontrol S49 MK2, and the Maschine Jam. Since my workspace is limited, this version of Mikro will be able to compliment the other two. I’m more of a keys guys than a pads guy, but having access to velocity-sensitive pads make this a good companion. This would be my use case.

Accurate Beats I’ll be sure to let you know, for sure! I had a different controller over a year ago, along with Maschine Studio and Jam, and all worked well. Firstly, good review. One of the best so far on this MM V3. I don't really care much for the NI software & will be buying this primarily as a midi controller. With that being said, how's is the midi functionality implemented? It's it easy to use this to control, say Ableton Live? (& not use the Maschine software)...
@AccurateBeats

Thank you! Yeah? There is a reason I’m not mentioning the midi functionality at all. In the beta version of the firmware that is available right now there is no midi option implemented at all. The problem with entry level maschine products is that they are less intuitive than their larger counter parts. I really struggled with mikro but the mk3 is so much easier, with the studio likely being more user friendly again. I like that people can jump on the system for a cheap price though and it is easier to learn the software first I think

Lira whether you are using a DAW or the MPC "software" you still have to use a software system to program your beats. A stand alone device means you can work without using a computer but you still are working with software. At the end of the day it's all about what will suit your workflow. You get a lot more sounds to start off with when you get a Maschine product but it soon weighs down your CPU if you are building a lot of beats. Old MPC's don't give you as many sounds so you will have to sample but less strain on the CPU is a big plus. Saving to external drive on both devices is a must. Personally I prefer the Maschine workflow but MPC is still a great workflow and may well suit you more.

Honestly, they should be concentrating on delivering us the big software update that's LONG OVER DUE. Customers, like myself who have been heavily invested with Maschine for years and years, have been requesting features to no avail. They haven't dropped a big update since 2.0 was introduced what 4-5 years ago? To compete with the other big names they need to focus on getting the software up to speed and where it needs to be. Such as adding audio tracks, better Mixer (maybe real send and return tracks?) better automation, and drastically improve that god awful sequencer. In 2018 why can't I record drum mutes on the fly? or why can't I drop an MP3 into the software? C'mon NI more hardware? REALLY? Yeah the new Mikro MK3 is good for entry level and live performers... Sure but come on, lets's keep it 100 here, there isn't much difference in size between that and the full size MK3 and if your going to be needing an interface you're going to need to travel with the full size controller anyway! If you are a Maschine user like me, Love the system, love the workflow but hate the limitations. Like this comment if you want to see a solid software update instead of these new pieces of hardware. Good honest review anyway Accurate! Love the honesty! Keep doing your thing mate salute...

Thanks man! I tried to be as honest as possible :) I also agree with some of your points here. The software could need a little tlc and some features needs to be added... I’ve grown into the hardware/ software and adapted to a degree where I don’t even think a lot about the shortcomings any more. But you’re right. This hardware isn’t meant for users like us and I wish they did things like this AND updated the software at the same time. Let’s see what happens next. I doubt there will be a new studio version and if the Jam gets a MK2 that’s not gonna be much different. Next focus should logically be the software, right? Thanks for watching man. I really appreciate comments like these!

Maschine 3 has been confirmed, tho keep in mind that it's not meant to be a fully-fleshed out daw, but more like a tracker/live sequencer on steroids. If you want all those lacking features, you can integrate Maschine in Live 9/10. To me, better automation could be a thing in 3.0, but audio tracks? I mean, what's the point in a sampler software? Sure, I'll be as happy as everyone else with every big update, only if it doesn't slow-down the software.

Maschine is a harware/software hybrid. You get the machine software with the purchase and it all works perfectly together. You might need an audio interface to route your audio in and out with pro quality but it also works with a pair or normal headphones connected to the computer.

Hey I'm thinking of buying the new mk3 mikro as it comes with the maschine software(never used it before). I'm using fl studio for trap beats but I'd like to try something new and get more into old school hip hop sampling. I ve seen a lot of people using maschine for sampling but I can only afford the mikro series...should I go for it or for the akai mpd226 which is more cheaper?
@AccurateBeats

There is no comparison between Maschine and an MPD. Maschine has its own software that is just as capable as FL and more. MPD is just a midi controller... With Maschine you’ll have to learn a completely new workflow and a pattern based sequencing system that’s a little complicated... If you have the time and the patience needed I’d definitely get a Maschine Mikro MK3! It’s an awsome controller for an awsome software. Thanks for watching the video man!

Buy the Mikro MK2 instead. The Mikro MK3 doesn't even come with the full factory content (only 1,6 GB vs. the full 9 GB the MK2 comes with) nor Komplete Select. Plus the MK2 has a bigger display and Midi functionality (which the Mikro MK3 lacks completely).

Ive bought and taken back the mk3..the mikro and now the mpc studio... tried to justify myself having a mk3 but thought too much that I only had a glorified preset browswer and spent too much money ..so tried the mikro and mpc (mikro) studio.... now I will buy another mk3 because the mikros are fine but more menu diving and harder for me to see the tiny screen and search for one function that takes more clicking shift and another double use button and found that it just gets too complicated for me...the mk3 seemed very easy to start with.. one click and you are in keyboard mode...one click back to drum mode..octaves right there and track change also one click... so justifying myself spending 350 more than the mikro is well worth it now...I just hope the shop doesnt ban me from buying anything from then again with my neurotic tendencies :)

I realized something. If you see the product lineup carefully, they have introduced Mikro MK3 as a companion for A-series keyboards. So, for $400-500 (which is less than Maschine MK3 and S-series keyboard individually) you get a Maschine controller and keyboard. Both of them do not have big displays and are made for work with the Mashine software.

@AccurateBeats

As long as you have an audio interface that can handle the incoming audio it’s just a matter of telling Maschine to sample from that input. Simple stuff :) You can even start the recording of a sample from the hardware but editing is done on the software. Everything you can do on the full-size Maschine MK3 can be done on the software, thereby also with the Mikro MK3 connected :)

@@AccurateBeats ehh, its not the same. I want something as integrated as the maschine is but can be, say, set to group b when your main unit is set on group A... can play and record to both groups at the same time. A midi controller becomes problematic as mascine uses a type of midi that is way more expansive than standard, making using it with anything midi either super tedious or super restricted (which is why the vst is crap for it)

Good, honest review, Accurate. The update to Mikro MK3 actually does let you chop samples from the hardware. HOWEVER..... the customizable MIDI mode is gone. No Controller Editor support. Fixed midi assignments on the buttons and the encoder, and fixed midi notes for the pads (and only one "page" for the pads). 2020 EDIT-- it has Controller Editor support, now. Good. To anyone curious-- go with a used Mikro MK2 (ideally with a software license transfer). Or, go with a used Maschine MK2 (with software license transfer). Only a little more money ($160 used on average these days. The Mikro is $100). They're removing too much from the new hardware.... HUGE mistake. The older controllers are better, and WAY more functional, MIDI-wise (perfect for general MIDI use... or DAW control, using Reaper, Logic, etc). Even a Maschine Studio is only $225-300 used, these days (often with license transfer included, too). Worth every penny. Mikro MK3? Nope. Pass on it.
@DopamineOverload
@DopamineOverload 3 жыл бұрын
@Harry W The Studio's getting even more love, these days. Still as powerful as ever. It's better to go with the older controllers. The MK2 gives you two screens and 8 encoders. The Studio gives you two color screens and 8 encoders, and a jogwheel with 6 different pages to do whatever you want (not just with the Maschine software). The older controllers are good investments, in my humble opinion.

Pretty useless imho. MASCHINE has always been marketed as being able to look less at the computer which fails with the mikro. they removed more features than they added. You get a few more buttons, which are nice, but you could access them in MK2 with a modifier button (such as the shift). You also get a new touch bar (a bit gimmicky tbh). But besides that, you lose the ability to fully produce a beat without ever touching you computer. You can't edit samples, you cant use the rotary encoder on a lot of parameters that you could previously access. They even lowered the price! Overall it is a cheaper unit (both from the building and user point of view

The mikro looks intended for someone who wants heavier integration with their computer, rather than doing it entirely without even looking at a screen like in a standard maschine mk3.
