I'm as big an NI fanboy as anyone can get... but there are a few things that aren't sitting well with me, regarding these first impressions of Maschine+: 1. The price. No way will people drop $1400 for a standalone Maschine (especially with millions of artists going broke because of this year and the pandemic), when you can buy a MK3 and a used quad-core Dell laptop with an SSD, 16gb of ram, and full HD display (Precision M4700) for a total of only $900. People have made videos of how they do a quasi-standalone MK3 with a custom stand and a hidden laptop with the lid closed (disabling "sleep" mode), underneath it. This is a great option, especially if... 2. There's no battery? None? Not even a port for a future installed battery of some sort? See number 1, above. A Dell laptop and the original MK3 can work without power for 3-4 hours easily. Just take your MK3, laptop, headphones and a short USB cable to the park, connect cable, close lid, and you're golden. 3. If there's no battery, people will go to the MPC Live 2, or stick with the highly-affordable MPC One... which is KILLING it these days. I used to not be an Akai person, but when they released MPC Beats, I got hooked on the workflow. I still think Maschine is better, across the board, but the MPC workflow is appealing. I think it was a wise move for them... and that immediately followed the release of MPC One... it didn't receive a ton of love at first, but people came around to it and now love the thing. Additionally, it can work with a battery bank and adapter. 4. I don't need a touchscreen, but a lot of people asked for one. What makes the MPC One appealing is the large amount of dedicated buttons (which the Live/Live2 does not have) as well as a touchscreen. Pads may be slightly smaller, but that's not a deal-breaker. 5. Lastly, people complained about MK3 not having a phantom power switch for condenser mics. This doesn't, either, so it seems.... I really dig all the Maschines I own (Studio, MK2, MK3, Mikro MK2, and JAM). But I don't think this is going to fly with a lot of people. Just reading through these comments, and the posts at the official Maschine forum... and seeing the amount of dislikes, already... I don't know. I just don't know. What I like--- the (hopefully) improved encoders... the MK3 suffers from smooth to "too loose" encoders right out of the box (I returned two MK3s before hanging onto my main one-- which still has 3 loose encoders, and 5 good ones (been like that since day one).... The main thing people want is the song mode, the arrangement improvements (the stuff that's coming, probably with the release of Maschine+). That's what we need most. Just some food for thought! Still love the whole Maschine thing.

I have both Mk3 and MPC Live. For my $1000+ I spent on the MPC, I have gotten all I needed and expected. Can't count how many times I've had to reinvest in NI because they dole out features with new hardware. I've already bought a Studio, upgraded to Mk3, invested in Jam and Komplete Ultimate. Now they drop a $1000+ new piece of gear that I of course I want, but can't justify buying for just standalone functionality. My MPC has been standalone forever and never once have I felt like I needed to throw another $1000+ at Akai. I love Maschine, but if there's no crossgrade/upgrade I'm more likely to divest.

How do you find MPC Live? I am just starting out with Ableton with a Novation Launchkey. Would like something standalone as well.
@adamdykhouse51024 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I've been a maschine user for a bit and just made the switch to MPC one (of course right before this gets announced). I won't return it for the maschine+ though because it's half the price and can do basically all the same things. Using KitMaker (an extra $30) I was even able to port a bunch of maschine drum libraries over to the MPC for use in standalone mode. If I really want to use Kontakt or a more complex maschine kit, I'll just resample them in MPC, bring my mk3, or just bring my laptop with me. Definely not worth $1400 when theres a $700 option that will get you 90% of the way there.
@Roomer6454 жыл бұрын
You people dont get the point ... NI is a company and a company needs to make money. People who already invested in NI are not making them extra money really. They want new customers, and maybe even MPC users that were suckers for standalone devices. All these Maschine upgrades are only costing them money to develop and expansions are not making them much revenue so they need to come out with new hardware from time to time. So, the Maschine + is aimed at Mpc users, or users that are currently looking for a device and are not sure what to get. Akai used to be the only one with a one stop solution but now NI has this new device. Once more, loyal customers are not the most important, they already have their money, it’s the new customers that are important !

this is an interesting idea to take maschine out of the studio/laptop, but there are other things I'd like to see - like better intersection/integration with DAWs like Logic. Especially considering many maschine users have a stronger computer than what's in this box. I (still) have a hard time moving from Maschine into a proper DAW to finish (arrange, mix, master) a track. Which moves me into the next big issue - maschine still doesn't seem to have addressed how to make a real track in Maschine vs. loops/beats. Ideas/song is a good start, but... not there yet. I don't need another computer - I need a better integrated experience with the rest of the ecosystem. Sadly this won't earn a pre-order purchase. I hope it's good enough for NI that they can get back to the roots of helping us make and finish songs more in the creative moment (which this does help with, but i quickly get to back to can't finish a track in maschine). Currently I have to come out of creative mode to think about how I get a beat into a DAW to make a proper track. I ❤️ maschine for making beats, but sadly I have not been able to easily integrate into my workflow with Logic. I'm probably the minority but the experience isn't there for me yet.

Food for thought: DAW arrangement functionalities and a performance instrument interface are two different technological goals. That is NOT to say they are not compatible but making a hardware device accomplish both must be though as an open problem with many possible solutions and compromises. Developing a custom computer for a device (optimized for refurbished software) is not to be taken for granted. That justifies (to some extent) the limited cpu specs. I think they're are being consistent with Maschine original orientation: a sketching tool, beat making device and performance instrument. Also the mappings for external gear is a nice addition. Going for a DAW-like stand-alone hardware device capable of running vst's would make a much greater effort (and greater CPU, RAM and memory specs), specially considering portability and instrument playability. My opinion: Amazing but over-priced product. Stop crying: no body is pushing you into buying anything, re-think your product purchases or telling you how to produce.

NPC007 true on the time stretching but personally I have never really time stretched so that’s a mute point for me, I do mainly electronic music with recorded synths or softsynths. I use it to create drum patterns with one hit samples. As for the cheap plastic, I’m ok with that. I’m not hitting people in the head with it, it would chill with me in my studio or couch or whatever. The thing is, for $1400 I still have to bounce everything into ableton just so I can do something as basic as automation between patterns/scenes so I rather do that for $700 instead. I’ve been using maschine since mk1 and I keep upgrading because of the promise that it might be a one stop shop one day where I could finish a track with it. I think I’m done with it. The MPC one I can do most everything I need that the maschine does from my couch without having a laptop tether to it and then finish in ableton as always.

Sergio Casino There's no standalone that can compete with the capacity and power of a current desktop. NI knows that and this is designed to be standalone, which means compromises have been added. It’s not clear yet how complete the Kontakt port will be. So it may only run sample sets that are specifically compatible. We'll see. Also not clear if SSDs can be connected to USB ports. If so, that would give you the storage for large sample sets but this is where the 4g ram might be more of a limitation. I imagine Kontakt Instruments would have to have a smaller footprint, like the play series, to work well on this standalone device. I can't imagine the Symphonic series chugging along on 4gigs ram.

Most likely on the internal flash but thats just 32GB and when you turn the device on for the 1st time it only has like 18GB free due to the OS, maschine and massive software, 8GB standard library and what not. Expansions max it out really really fast and the included 64GB SD is a nice touch but with the avid NI user its a matter of 1 day of downloads of previously purchased expansions and its full. Komplet is the same thing and even worse so your looking at probably a high capacity 512GB or 1TB (very expensive). Ofcourse you could probably connect an usb SSD but it defeats the purpose of standalone if you constantly need to connect (and take along) extra devices. The internal storage should have been 256GB which would have sufficient for 95% of the users. Right now i am sure that with the NI software the 32GB is NOT enough for 95% !
