The Maserati MC20 packs 630bhp from its twin-turbo V6 but hoes does this 204mph Maserati supercar compete with the latest V6 offerings from McLaren and Ferrari?

The MC20 will be unloved during it's production but will be a future sought after classic in the coming years. It's a car that knows exactly what it was designed to be, an Italian supercar. I'd gladly take the MC20 out of the rest in it's class. It's beauty won't fade and those delightful turbo induction noises won't either. Nobody buy them please so they can have massive Maserati depreciation and maybe I can score one for "cheap".

youre assuming that cars today will age and depreciate the same way that cars from the last 40 years, i fear that wont be the case with alternative fuels taking over just around the corner… i dont think that something like this would be regarded as a Mondial for example - its gonna be regarded as “one of the last great supercars”, purely because of its internal combustion engine. sad to think about it…

It doesn't know what it was designed to be - that Alfa Romeo steering wheel and Fiat 500e screens are the proof of it. It originally had to be the Alfa Romeo 6C , then plans changed midway through development.

I love Harry's videos because he treats the audience like adults. Just talks to us about the car in a normal sensible way. Unlike these other car KZbinrs who insist on treating us like children who need to be excited and stimulated all the time (thumbnails with the KZbinr pulling stupid concerned or excited faces next to the car as an example).

Different target audiences, I'd say. Harry's aiming more toward the middle-aged to old demographic, while those other guys are aiming at the youngsters. Honesty is rewarded by that older audience, that young audience wants the excitement and the hypes and scandals. I think that's natural. You don't know shit when you're young, but you are easily excited, you are curious and impressionable. Then you do the things you want to do, learn the things you want to learn... and get to a point where you've left easily excited and impressionable behind. That's when you get into the details and start appreciating those. And then you're at the point where you know what you want, you know what you like. Anyone who has done their fair share of driving in their life knows what they want from a car. So Harry's honesty is appreciated. No need for stories, just straight to the point - we know what we want, just tell us about the car and we'll know whether we like it. I suspect that the excitement of the younger audience makes for a more lucrative channel over all. And that the older audience is more loyal. Two different strategies to run a channel, I guess.

I love the way that there still are normal-sized, exotic sportscars today. I grew up in the generation of the Ferrari 308 and 512, Maserati Merak and Bora, Lotus Esprit, etc. One of the great things about those cars was that they had that very low, compact, and high power per weight look. Nowadays, many sportscars are as long and wide as luxury sedans with 1,000hp. Who cares?? It's a breath of fresh air to see cars back like the MC20, 296, and Emira. I love them!!

@@JDMism It says nothing about me other than obvious corruption makes me exceedingly angry. I mean, how could this possibly be "Car of the Year" when it's horribly over-priced, too heavy, slower than the competition, has numb steering, can't put the power down, a pathetic fuel tank, no luggage space, and a pedestrian interior? Literally all it has over competing vehicles is its looks, which are subjective anyway. It. makes. no. sense. Watch AutoExpert - he's an ex motoring journalist and often tells stories of how he'd been told by the boss to alter reviews to be more friendly to a manufacturer who spent a lot of money on advertising, or was bribed with trips to exotic locations for new vehicle releases, knowing he'd be cut out in the future if he didn't follow up with a glowing review. I mean Ferrari are famous for cutting people out entirely for one or two negative comments about their vehicles - it's just a reality & it sucks.

Interesting take on it. I'm not convinced by any of the three to be brutally honest. The McLaren has some big QC concerns and the battery question - especially with the kind of sporadic use supercars tend to get, the Ferrari similar battery issues and a massive price tag then this comes along with a lot of reports of loose fitting interiors, squeaks and rattles, questionable weight and a talent for losing traction. From everything I've seen so far I would still take the Lotus over these even with the price difference. It may not have the numbers but it looks to be a much better all around car.

I remember watching a review by Steve Sutcliffe who seemed to absolutely love the MC20, so it is interesting to have a different point of view here. I really don't understand why they used such a small fuel tank - perhaps to disguise some weight? But then a carbon tubbed V6 you wouldn't expect to be heavy. Harry definitely has a point with the hybrid cars though and the need to replace the battery - it is a real consideration. I understand that LaFerrari owners are now looking at having to pay out $200,000 to replace their cars' battery and there's a waiting period of over a year - the car can't be used without the battery either. Perhaps the Artura and the 296 won't have such an expensive battery, but battery degradation will be a factor, and you can bet that it won't be all that cheap to replace... The MC20 is a gorgeous looking car, albeit not a perfect car.

Very pretty car, but I'm not sure this has much relevance in the real world today other than for those that can use this on track or in a very limited subset of places. Harry, on your recent Emira Euro Trip series you mentioned Mrs. M approved of the Lotus. My wife and I would love a video on Mrs. M’s top picks from your collection or favorite road adventure. Keep up the great work!

You’re a brave man, Harry. It looked like a proper handful in those conditions. I think “interesting” is certainly the phrase. I’d have your Lotus every day. £240k is a bit daft too 🤔

It would be interesting to see how it goes in more clement conditions, but it won't get its power down as well as the 911 turbo - arguably a more direct rival.

Interesting review Harry. I have an MC20 and I agree the fuel gauge is frustrating. My own real world experience is I reckon the software gets it wrong in its estimation, that said it’s not a large tank. I’ve never had problems bottoming out at all. I can’t comment on the cold wet greasy conditions you had to deal with but in the dry I have no problem getting the power down. I actually think the tech is pretty good and modern. As you noted the doors open wider than you think and I’m glad I don’t have carbon fibre sills for the reason you noted. I have to use a small blower battery blower to clear the mess after a decent run. There’s no peer on looks, and if you’re older than 40 (let’s face most buyers are at this price) you don’t look like a peacock trying to show off. Think EVO’s MC20 must have eaten some pasta the day it was weighed 😅

I agree with your post. I'm also an owner and I've not had problems with bottoming out (except for large speed bumps) or putting the traction down. Like most supercar owners- I got my car PPF's before I picked it up, so the dirt that's kicked up through the door aero is less of an issue. The roads that Harry was testing on were more suited for an SUV than a supercar. And the cold, wet weather wasn't exactly a great day for testing. I hope that Harry gives it another chance under better conditions. I love mine regardless.

Getting a lot of quadrifoglio vibes from this car, all the carbon, undertray wind design, steering wheel design and of course the TT V6

Would have loved to see Harry using this car to its full potential on dry roads. And I wish Maserati had made the engine sound more like the V8 Granturismo unit. A Maserati really needs to have that glorious symphonic sound.

The engine sounds really good. Hard to capture in recording.

@@JohnFromAccounting - yes, I know it’s better than it seems in recordings and not at all bad for a V6. But is it a match for that V8? I haven’t yet heard an MC20 in real life but I’ve read that it’s not close to the Granturismo for audible drama.

@@RichardHartley65 a friend of mine owns a GranTourismo Stradale since new. While I wouldn't like to own the car from a performance/GT standpoint (not worth due to the running costs, from my pov you get better for the money)... But the engine sound. My god. It is glorious indeed. Everytime I hear it fire up from cold I wonder how it passed the regulations on noiselevels

have you heard it in real life? everyone. And i mean everyone. Jethro, Harry and all the folk from evo and frankel all said it sounded like a group b car when youre inside it and not that loud outside? Isnt that a good thing? Getting all the sound you want without disturbing others, but not pumping in stereo noise like bmw

Interesting to compare your views to the more eulogised view of Evo Magazine in ECOTY. Great to have Maserati back though. Saw your Lancia Fulvia at Bicester today, what a lovely car, fabulous to see it out and about.

It is drop dead gorgeous. Despite the testing conditions, this does not seem to be the best of its class. Harry is being a true British gentleman in this case and keeps his verdict very composed. I do believe that this might be perfect just standing still in a car storage gaining age and value.
