@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I own a GranSport MC Victory and am thinking of buying an 08 Quattroporte. I'm pretty freaked out about the cam variator issue. What are some symptoms to look out for?

Peter first off, the MC victory is the best GS made period. Congrats on picking one up. 100% of the wet sump cars will have cam variator failure . Symptoms are clatter on start up from them being dry and the pin which locks them into position getting ground down. Mine recently failed and am currently looking for the right tech to do the job. It should have been a recall. It wouldn’t keep me from buying one but would budget 6-7k to have it done. Oil pumps can also be an issue. As I said in the video this one doesn’t come with as strong a recommendation as the GS. Hope this helps .

Peter mine has 50k and they started going probably just before I got the car. It would only happen randomly like every 30th start so wasn’t a huge concern. The later 4.7 cars should be better but use a similar design

You know brother I liked you immediately, Like bumping into a long not seen cousin or something. I loved your description but incredibly this manner of describing the ethnicity of the car which was going so well would've notched up by a mad multiple if you had indeed bought one of the manual cars and not just learnt how to drive it but learnt how to ride it. I just know that you would`ve loved it. Just by what comes over by what you know is important in a car. I insist you would`ve loved it broth. As it is, you missed out on the so organic multi-task. Like while on a huge beast you find yourself instinctively sing multiple spur jabs of the belly with your riding boots, multiple tugs on the rains, some deft, some harsh, subtlety disguised aggression, you lean back, lean forward, all that which goes with a galloping horse that once in full flight is its own reward. The auto is like any other cars auto and you drive like you "drive" any other car but the f1 gearbox is something enthusiasts will gladly own this car for. I once read it described as an organ player playing Puccini or at least that's what it would look like to your friends and family. As you do multiple things to create multiple bellows from the exhaust. The sound of the overrun on the downshift its so dark so sinister it`s those lower registers on the organ, those bass notes designed for the baritone of the opera, whatever musical piece is being played has just got darker. When you do it just right Brother I can't tell you how addictive that is, it`s a thousand times more addictive than the WOT on the run up through the revs through tunnels you well described.

How do you get the sticky off the buttons, I just purchased a 2010 Maser Quattroporte S Executive GT , trying everything to take it off and not the white. What actually works, tried makeup wipes, alcohol wipes it's on so thick. Please help.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage10 ай бұрын
There is a product for tint removal called ATR that I use on all Ferrari and a Maserati. It works great. Under some of the sticky the whole button is white. I typically send those few buttons out to be re coated in a hard material. There are several companies that offer a service as well

@@tonystark9118 atr solution is available several places on the net , you can get it here atrsolution.com. If you use it gently and dilute about 20% it only dissolves the sticky. Not those interior plastics! I mentioned in my comment on your GranSport video that we have two M139 Quattroportes in the family, and that means I've had to detail the sticky plastics on them both. It's a total nightmare and it's honestly a shame, considering how such a fantastic car was let down some in a very simple and easily avoidable way. There certainly should have been a class-action lawsuit over it. However, since the only thing to do about it was clean it myself, that's what I did. There is a name-brand product from Indonesia (I think), called Sticky Melting Solution, but plenty of household cleaners will work just fine. On the first Maserati, I dealt with it by way of using that [expensive] product; on the second Maserati, I tried make-up-removing wipes and Windex-the latter of which I chose for its ammonia content. The second time around, I had much better luck with the buttons: I had learned from my initial attempt, and I also happened to be working with buttons whose rubber coating was far more melted than that of the buttons in the first car. The only thing that gave me grief was that certain parts (in particular, panels and other pieces of trim) had a coating too thick to fully remove. For instance, that plastic flip-up cover over the cigarette lighter required from me *15 minutes* of wet sanding (for which I had to remove the piece from the car), and an eventual repaint. I'd have done this for all such panels, but some of them would require major disassembly of certain components. I had to leave the stickiness on the bezels around the rear window shades, and I also had to leave it around the window switches. (I was able to clean the buttons themselves, but the surrounding plastic was just not cleanable.) Either way, I totally transformed both cars-the second one, especially: my brother's car. After cleaning all the sticky buttons, repainting a few pieces, vacuuming the carpets, washing the exterior; doing a cleaning/conditioning of all leather surfaces, and performing a painstaking and meticulous agitation and cleaning of all the seats, I had around 20 personal hours sunken into the detailing. Totally worth it, though, to see the interior now! I'd love to share pictures, if there's some way I can.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage4 жыл бұрын
Message me on Instagram. I would love to see images !! Yes. Unquestionably there should have been a class action law suit. The GS has a couple pieces In the QP it’s like the whole interior. I used a product called atr mixed with water. Time consuming but brilliant result .

I love the E60 M5 and this generation of the Quatroporte. To say the M5 isn’t fast is silly though. Maybe you got a lemon. Your example of the Maserati is perfect spec.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage5 жыл бұрын
Alex Martinez the E60 had the largest maintenance history I have had with a car since an early ur quattro I had years back. It was a nightmare car. Flat out at higher speeds it was faster than the MAS but neither car is particularly rapid compared with modern M Or Audi RS cars. The M5 would default to low power mode once a week always a different sensor , always on a sensor that had already been replaced. I have driven a few M6 and M5 and I don’t know, I think they are just to be avoided. The e39, I have never had anything but a great experience in one of those. The f12 is massively fast and the e60... it’s one of the best sounding cars of all time bar non (especially with exhaust) but owning one seems like it would be a never ending nightmare. I love the m139 QP. It’s flawed, it’s not super fast but it is a charmer.

@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I was looking for a Maserati because I can't afford a Ferrari this year. However, with three BMWs in the fold the wife will not take kindly to another so it has to be perfect. The e61 is not faultless, driving it smoothly is like trying to ride a tiger that has seen red meat. Though an e39 is better around town with the manual shift, I think the v10 is more fun overall and dare I say it the SMG paddle experience is rewarding on a track and such fun on an open road. Duo select trans is not the problem, it's the electronic when driven in automatic mode ,simply is not fast enough for F1 transmission so the clutch slips too much, but driven in manually it can last for ever ,that's what people say in Europe it was made for to be driven this way. There is a company called Formula electronics that makes bypass modules ( drive by wire) that improve the automatic mode drive way better for the clutch.

Check the visors, a lot of them are broken and won’t stay up, def a problem with these. It should have already had the cam variators done. If it hasn’t that will need doing on the wet sump car. Budget 3k or so for that if it hasn’t been done. I would also have them insure the heater core has either been replaced or doesn’t need doing. Other than that just straight forward stuff. If it hasn’t had a trans filter and fluid change I would do that too just to insure no future issues.

Of the 7-8 cars I have driven for more than 400 miles, each has had a sensor error or failure reducing the power and revs including when I test drove one new. With stock pipes the note is barely more interesting than the slovenly Audi v10. It’s a hard pass for me. The QP is a delight and more fun to hustle. An e46 330 is a better car than the e60 😜. If you love it then by all means enjoy it. For me it’s just a huge let down every time. Redlined in every gear, gear shift set as hard as possible it’s still impossible to overlook the diff whine suggesting impending doom, the smell of burning bearings and the Idrive disaster keeping you from ever feeling like you want spend time in it.

OK. I came very close to pulling the trigger on one of these in 2011. I went with a 2005 XJR instead. My main reason for going the jag route was the motors. The Maser needs to rev. That's a blessing and a curse, especially for a "daily". I found myself dreading the gasoline bills with extended QPorte ownership. Sure is a looker though, especially the interior. And that exhaust note! You make a great argument, to the point where I started shopping for QPorte's on Autolist! Wouldn't it be fun to produce a comparison video between this car and a 2008 XJR?
@TimsEnthusiastGarage2 жыл бұрын
I had a 2006 XJR ( I had the earlier gens as well). I put 15k miles on the R. Loved it. It didn’t make you love it the way the QP does but in most ways it was a better car. I would do a comparison if I could get both cars together

@@TimsEnthusiastGarage That's another dream: Start doing "recent classic" comparos. I can think of many comparos to do similarly to a X351/m139 comparo. Getting 'em together would be the challenge, but a worthy challenge to try to overcome. 2014 XKR comparo with 2014 SL63 would be another very timely side by side to do.

Anyone from the whole of humanity LOVES the 5 series, it's the daddy of saloons and the E60 M5 is the masterpiece of masterpieces and this Goliath of a man didn't like it??? I've been driving a 5 series (E39 and E60) for almost 20 years now I wouldn't drive anything else

I drove a 2003 e39 M5 today. Each and every time I drive the e39 my completely justified hatred for the e60 is emboldened. It is a complete and total disaster and in particular the M5. Electronic issues, transmission issues, engine rod bearings, engine throttle body issues. The worst MMI of all time, horrible plastic materials that split and splinter l. Rubbish bushings the list is vast. Enjoy your e39 M5, it’s the best M5 they ever made.
