410hp in 1958 !!! it is mental.

Absolutely. I read an official Maserati article which stated that the car could reach 350Km/h. Personally, I think it's all theoretical; I'm not even convinced that it could aerodynamically reach those speeds, then there would be the whole question of totally inadequate tires, etc., etc. But perhaps according to their calculations, it could still reach crazy speeds. Who knows in Monza on the oval banking Sir. Stirling Moss what speed reached... These old pilots had to be very reckless to race with these cars 60 years ago.

In that case, you should read about the Alfa Romeo "Bimotore" of 1935. Weighs more than a ton, with two engines making a combined output of either 510 or 530 hp (depends on what engine is fitted, a choice of two 2.9 liter, 255hp engines, or two 3.2 liter, 265hp engines), but can reach speeds of more than 320km/h (the smaller engined car was tested on public roads, where they managed to do around 210mph!), a car so heavy, yet so fast the tyres fitted to it were extremely inadequate!

Two speed gear box. The only other racer I know of with two gears is the Chaperell though that uses a fluid flywheel, like an automatic, to get the revs up.

One of what I call "European Indy" cars. This car, the Lister-Jaguar "Monzanapolis", and the Ferraris 375 "Indy"(the car fielded in the 1952 Indy 500) and the 412MI. The good thing is, while this car is in a museum, It's being exercised periodically, though, the Brits did one better. The Lister-Jaguar "Monzanapolis" is still racing in historic events!

You are right; we are lucky that the owner is a real motor enthusiast and often uses the car. I believe that making it race would be too risky, it's a one-off model, has been carefully restored and is also the ex-official Stirling Moss car. It would be a shame to got ruined or crashed.

@@Italiansupercarvideo Well, I don't feel too bad about old original race cars getting damaged being raced nowadays, as long as they get fixed and raced again (that car had been damaged in period as well). For me, since they were built as a race car, crashing or damaging is a real possibility, that's their life, pushing harder than ever, trying to outlast their opponents, by one way or another. Anyway, its British peer, the Lister-Jaguar "Monzanapolis" is also a one-off car, but it is still being raced by its current owner. Here's a clip of it crashing at FOS: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3Kxdamtlstjn9k Don't feel bad about it, the owner himself is a well-known panel beater of the bodies of cars like this, he fixed it, and last year, *it won a race at Spa Six Hours Classic meeting* , beating cars such as the Lotus 25 formerly raced by Jim Clark, and the 250F formerly raced by Maria Teresa de Filippis.

2 speed gearbox? Fast gear and faster gear? Seems odd for an Italian car. Not so odd for an Indy special, though. There is a town in my state named El Dorado, the locals pronounce it "Eldo-rayda".

I don't have much information about the gearbox, it's correct, only had two gears and they were very long because the car was designed to run on the Monza Oval banking and for the Indianapolis 500. In fact, if you pay attention, the start is always difficult because the first gear is very long and the engine may stop.

It's designed to compete against Indy specials, so the two-speed gearbox would've been logical for them.
