When it comes to scotch there is so much to choose from. I enjoy scotch from every region and this is one of my top 3. In fact, this is what I would consider to be a classic scotch. The 18 is fantastic but the 12 is also an excellent scotch at a reasonable price. I get upset with some of the snobs on KZbin that may consider this to be entry level. I enjoy the scotch as much as others costing 2 and 3 times as much. The Peat is very flowery. It is not harsh at all. One of my favorite scotches of all time.

Of all the Scotch that I’ve tried thus far, it’s def one of my favorites. Not too much peat, just enough for me. The sweetness at the end is really nice. It’s just all around really good.

I've learned recently, as I am amateur at this, that a peaty dram is not necessarily a smoky dram. One can have more peat flavor than smoke(Laphroig 10 so I hear), or the smoky note can overwhelm the peat flavor(Lagavulin 16 so I hear). And then there is everything in between. Oban 14, remember I am new to this, is an awesome dram where that hint of smoke along with the rest of its qualities was just great to me. My two best scotches that I've tried are the Oban 14 and Glenlivet 18 (43abv), and I haven't had too many more scotches that are notable really. Thanks for reviewing this! Really appreciate that you mentioned the earthnotes that accompany this as those are the ones I am most interested in and getting all fired up about experiencing in this dram next week! Cheers!

Nice summary. I always get a kinda sour orange citrus of sorts, like marmalade. The peat, honestly to even taste it I need to ship it alongside something with zero peat, such are the hazards of enjoying too many big peat monsters. A great whisky that'll stay with you long after you've cut your teeth. Great to see you enjoy it. And thank you for rocking the shirt 😉👍
@TheMashandDrum6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Roy! The citrus orange note got louder the longer it sit in the glass. I can see your point. My palate got used to the peat very quickly and those other flavors came through. Looking forward to more peaty drams. Cheers and was proud to wear your shirt. 🥃🥁

I had my first glass of this today. I got the same sweet smell, a nice flavor. I didn't notice the peat or smoke until the back end. After taking a sip, I could taste the peat & smoke in the back of my throat for about a minute. I think this is one I will really enjoy.

I just bought a bottle today, can’t wait to open it! I read actually 20% of this whisky is peated and produced locally and the rest comes from the mainland. So It explains the smokiness is not overpowering and well balanced and integrated with the other flavours. Good stuff !

Nice review. I agree with your description of the nosing and taste. I would just add that for me I do smell the Sherry when nosing. Also when finished my class smells like campfire. Despite all the wonderful reviews I stayed away from this Scotch for a while because I was afraid of the peat and smoke. During the nosing and tasting I get a whiff of smoke but I cannot tell that the peat is there. I regret waiting too long to buy my first bottle. This is an excellent classic scotch. If you have experience with whisky I would say don't be afraid of the smoke and peat. They are not dominating at all during the nosing or tasting. Highly recommended!

Nice review, this one is a good introduction to peat as you get the peat all the way through but it's not overwhelming combined with a well made sherry cask aged Scotch giving lots of complex flavors to explore. Cheers
@TheMashandDrum6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better. I got the Sherry and peat flavors. As my palate got used to it the peat balanced the sweet. I was pleasantly surprised. Cheers and thanks for watching!

Just picked up a bottle of this and popped the cork to smell it from the bottle. Haven't tasted it yet, but the peat seems subdued and it smells very malty. Can't wait to get into a pour. Cheers!

When I think of peated whiskies, I think of liquid barbeque. If I can find HP 12 VH here in Florida I will try or buy it, Although I like strong peat, I also like just a hint as well. One of my go-to scotches is McClellands. It's an entry level Bowmore. Great review as always. Good start for your peat quest.
@TheMashandDrum6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Birddog. My palate took to the peat pretty well even though it's a subtle peat but I did enjoy it. It gets real cistrusy the longer it sits. Cheers!

I tried this tonight and it was not for me. It is very flavorful and spicy, as advertised, but I didn't really like the flavor. I'd describe it as tasting like Listerine original flavor with baking spice added to it. Very alcohol forward. Burns going down. Every other whiskey that I've tried I've liked better.
