Imagine back in the mid 70's Wayne wanting to force executives to also sign the "morals clause". Makes one wonder what he might have suspected back in the day. People don't realize Wayne had quite a leg to stand on when it came to his MASH contract as he was already a pretty successful businessman by then. The rumours have always been that his business interests were either losing or not making the money they should have because he was tied up with filming, so he left to focus on that. His book "Make Your Own Rules" is a really interesting read, I highly recommend it

But seasons #4-6 are well-written for the most part. The show should have ended around 1979, 80.

I always thought Mr. Rogers left cuz he didn’t like playing second fiddle to Alan Alda. Now we know it had nothing to do with that. It was basically the business side that made him leave.
@leogetz3570
@leogetz3570 11 ай бұрын
Well, there is some truth in the "second fiddle" aspect. Remember, he was a businessman first and an actor second, and the rumours were that his business interests were either losing or not making the money they should have because he was so tied up with filming. He thought that if his character wasn't going to develop and be nothing more than a "sidekick", it didn't make good business sense to stay. Add that to the contract dispute and it was easy for him to leave

What a guy. I watched him in latter years on Cash'in In, the FOX Business show. I also followed him on Twitter and he even followed me back and replied to a Tweet or two. Seemed like an authentic guy you'd want to be a friend. I read somewhere that he, Bob Hope and Fred MacMurray were the wealthiest guys in "Hollywood." He owned land, and in the 2000s a chain of 1,600 convenience stores throughout the south among other investments. Neat man.

@@diamonddog13 I hauled golf clubs around for Fred MacMurray each year when he attended the Roy Clark Celebrity Golf Tournament in Tulsa. I was a kid. He never tipped me, but he and his wife, June Haver, took me to a sponsor dinner, went to Mass with us and he was a nice man - closer to his end in the 80s.

I have a lot of respect for him for not signing that morals clause. It was written poorly. But he was the most conservative person on the set. He was a conservative republican(there is nothing wrong with that) and he had his head on straight. WHo were these studio heads to decide what was right and wrong

Fantastic interview. I watch MASH almost every night and everyone remain's timeless. Tonight's episode was COL Blake dating that young woman by the name of Nancy (played by actress Katherine Baumann). The character does her Ohio State cheerleading dance in the Officer's Club. Too funny.

Go read Sharon Gless’ new autobiography. She replaced Lynn Redgrave as the female lead in the final season of House Calls. Rogers does not come off well, though Gless concedes that he was a good kisser.
@racefan1701

Thanks, I didn't know she had written one. I read part of the story. Not defending Wayne's behavior, but Sharon was a bad choice for that show. She just wasn't a sitcom actress, they only used her because she was under contract for that studio and they wanted to get their money's worth and use her in something. I watched the show and liked it when Redgrave was there, but Sharon and Wayne had zero chemistry and you knew the show was not going to last after the switch.

Lynn Redgrave and her husband John Clark divorced (16:30) because he fathered a child with her daughter-in-law. The divorce was incredibly acrimonious with accusations of infidelity being claimed by both of them.

Wayne was always a great interview, but he was also great at rewriting history. He was a royal pain on both MASH and House Calls, complaining about scripts shorting his character on MASH and having total control on House Calls. One of the MASH writers once said "I only disliked one person on that show. The first fellow who played Trapper." On House Calls, CBS put up with Wayne because the show was ranked 14th and 8th the first two seasons (behind MASH) but the third year with the Lynn Redgrave bad press and Sharon Gless and Wayne having zero chemistry (not Wayne's fault on that), the show dropped to 23rd despite being behind MASH. At that point, CBS realizes they can put any cheaper show in there that would do just as well, so they dropped it. Sharon Gless was not a sitcom actor, so they made a huge mistake in that decision simply because she was under contract for that studio so they wanted to use her.

I have to admire Mr. Rogers and all the world of comedy with regards to taking something serious and flipping the coin to make that serious item be funny. My marriage has been extremely dramatic and in some cases, insane. But, I have learned to flip it around and make my marriage humorous and full of comedy in order to keep myself sane. Meanwhile, I believe that if I were to put my marriage on the air, people would laugh their heads off!

Wayne had a secret love child. THAT’s why he didn’t sign the contract. The mother of the child, whose now a college graduate, sued Wayne’s estate after his death for the money he promised her but never paid her to keep quiet about it, I read.

@@PopGoesTheCultureTV The mother BTW was Melinda Naud, a bombshell sitcom actress of the period (best known as Nurse Crandall on "Operation Petticoat"). She did sue Rogers' estate afterwards but she handled the situation poorly (I think she was representing herself eventually) and the suit was dismissed. But this had nothing to do with why he left MASH because the child was born in 1985.

@@indy_go_blue6048 his ego was too entrenched in it all. taking over directing and then writing, he was heavily into the change of the show for moral storylines. say 'Woke' story lines. pissed me off. first few seasons the best. all funny and just hilarious and entertaining. as much as he was a brilliant actor, he got too involved and too big had too much influence and say and was the reason for its downfall in latter seasons. the ones he wrote were woke sad drama pieces. unfunny and left me just cold and not uplifted at all. i was a teenager, but still, i was the mkt they were appealing too. i didnt need the wokeness moralistic theme. i couldn't even bare to watch that crappy moralistic GFA finale - how stupid with all these ridiculous things happening. didnt Mulcahy go deaf ? and other stupid stuff just for the last show ! i do remember watching as a kid, week by week yr by yr how it was changing and thinking wow, this show is just all serious now and not funny one bit. and it was sadly a bit depressing. became more like a true life tellie-movie documentary drama piece about death and war. who wants that. imagine if Gilligan's island, Hogans Heros, Brady Bunch, Bewtiched or even Seinfeld became all serious ! keep your morals and wokeness to yourself. do what you do best.... comedy !! oh well 5 great seasons, then slowly downhill !
