Mash's Wayne Rogers talks about rehearsing with Alan Alda Part 5 of 5

The conclusion of my conversation with Wayne Rogers, TV’s Trapper John on MASH, who passed away at the end of 2015.
In the last part of this interview, Rogers shares more of his favorite anecdotes, and talks about how he became a Broadway producer. He also talks about how he and Alan Alda rehearsed and honed their parts.

This was a pretty good interview of Wayne Rogers. They don't say how long ago this was done but Wayne went on "Cashin' In", a Fox News money show. Wayne became quite an investment advisor to the stars. He touched on his own finances by saying he saved his money and was financially self-sufficient. I agree with him on the cancellation of "House Calls". That was a very good sitcom and was not happy when they cancelled it. His role as Trapper John is one of the best that Hollywood had to offer. I feel his role only enhanced the role of Hawkeye and made Alda look that much more better. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing a few years back.

I honestly didn't know how much acting is like construction. It is though. We get a blueprint, the actors get a script. We get raw materials to work with. The actors get a caricature. then we build a item and the actors build a story. AWESOME!

Levin, the host ,had to know some of the things Wayne was forgetting, hell, I knew some stuff. but he let him talk, and this was really good. rest his soul, Rogers was good in anything.but I just heard a M*A*S*H line tonite, where Frank Burns I think, was talking ,to Hawkeye's indifference, and WR says "Hawk ,pay attention the man's trying to be dull".I've already heard it 40 times probably, but it's so damn funny, I bust a gut laughing. and he's so right about comedy. Peter O'Toole said in 'my favorite year'on his death bed I believe, ,"dying is easy, comedy is hard."

in 'same time next year' the cinema version, ironically ,which isn't mentioned, Alan Alda played the same role .wikipedia makes it look like sour grapes was the reason he left MASH. but they were lifelong friends. when he told the creators of the series that AA was more suited for the rapid one-liner Hawkeye Groucho -style dialogue, he had to know there couldn't be 2 'stars'.although they always seemed equal. he looks great for 80 something here.

Wayne had a money management & investment business and he was apparently worth about 75 million dollars at the time of his death.

The TV western Rogers talks about with Oates and McQueen was in season 2 of Wanted Dead or Alive. The other western with Warren Oates I believe is from Stagecoach West.

great to see this, good job. i really was more interested in the MASH stuff than anything else. wish there had been some more inquisitive questions on MASH. i didnt realise he was so much into the acting/producing and play business and diod so much with his career. i read about after he left MASH he went into investing building his portfolio and and a business advising starting making money that way. i read whilst on set of MASH he was looking at investment articles in the paper and looking at property to bnuy. and one cast member seemed to think he lost interest in MASH and left to go on to invest. guess we'll never really know all the real reasons. wished you hadcovered that more. oh well still good. seems strange he walked away from such a success over contract negs. like to know if he was ever melancholy on leaving after that ? but it seems he was well into plays and IMDB has him doing lots of TV movies throughout his career right up until 13 yrs only before he died. a full and busy life.. a genuine nice guy and talented for lots of things. finance, investing, acting, producing and more. RIP Wayne. Trapper Hakweye and Frank are my 3 favs and when Wayne left the show, thats was the subtle beginning of a downward spiral. once Frank left, it become horrible and serious and unwatchable IMO. first 5 seasons were terrific. maybe 5-7 till Frank ( Larry's) departure.
