Because he didn't want to beat them, he wanted to join them. now that there gone, there's no one to join. even when it is reviled that they can come back, he doesn't ready for another fight, as that won't give him what he wants. that remorse of his makes the satisfaction of him finally getting that invitation all the better, because it asks the question of "is he really going to get in after this? does he Deserve it be in after This?" and then they let him in. whether it is in spite of what he has done or because of it doesn't matter, because they finally let him in. He finally gets his dream.
