A night out at a steakhouse can be wonderful. Shelling out more than you'd normally pay for dinner for the privilege of a perfectly-cooked steak with some scrumptious sides can truly be one of the most satisfying dining experiences. But then, what if something goes wrong? Specifically, what if the steak is disappointing? A dream dinner can quickly become a nightmare.
Obviously it's impossible to get a guarantee that your dinner out will be perfect, but it's good to know where you can go to have the best odds of having a great meal, right? We tried steaks and many of the chain steakhouses in the U.S., and picked the ones that are most likely to be worth the price. Here are chain restaurant steaks, ranked from worst to best.

Cracker Barrel’s regular steak (as opposed to the country fried) is tasty - nicely seasoned - but remarkably tough. If I’m at a CB with friends it’s about the only low-carb option, but quite a workout for my jaw muscles.

The first time I went to Texas Roadhouse, I ordered a bone in ribeye and thought it was the best steak I ever had. Since then, it has been very hit or miss. I used to get that hit or miss taste with Longhorn but they have been consistently great for the past 2 years. Looking forward to trying Ruth's Chris soon.

The steak is very tender, just delicious so I don’t mind paying. What if you went to a chain and you got a very very good burger, you might think it was worth the price and get it nonetheless. I feel like some of these places can vary a lot by location. A lot of Outbacks I’ve been to are underwhelming and definitely overpriced, but luckily the one I live next to is actually consistently really good. In addition, their bloomin onion is one of my favorite appetizers anywhere. So perfect for casually sharing with a group.

Fortunate to live less than 15 miles from two wonderful local places. One has great ribeye and filet. The other serves an incredible Porterhouse as well as amazing broiled pork chops. Used to have a local place called the Claremont whose claim to fame was prime rib you could cut with your fork. Sadly they closed several years ago and no one else around comes close with prime rib. A restaurateur, who began locally, named Cameron Mitchell has developed quite a few successful concepts including one called Mitchell's which took everything Morton's did and does it better.

For a few years after they opened the Outback nearest us had the best steak for the money by way of the Victoria center cut filet. It was always cooked perfectly med-rare, good seasoning and nice sear. Then they went downhill for awhile and leveled out at mediocre. Also used to really like the Tuscan Ribeye from Macaroni Grill, and we have another smaller Italian restaurant "chain" here called Assaggio's that used to serve a phenomenal filet mignon with a mushroom and wine sauce. Taken off menu due to its cost (good beef isn't cheap in Hawaii).

Last time I was at Outback a few years ago, it was absolutely the worst steak I’ve ever had. As for Hawaii, one of the best steaks I ever had was at the Parker Ranch Broiler on the big island.

I didn't like when Outback started to grill steaks with tons of seasoning! So I started going to a Saltgrass Steakhouse in my town and found I had to tell them to back off on the seasoning as well! One waiter said "Well it is called Ssltgrass!" I might try longhorn some day!

Agree 100%...and you can pick your own if you like. I rate them higher than Longhorn for sure. I've been dozens of times and never looked twice at the Roadkill...odd choice imho.

Texas Roadhouse has my vote I really enjoy they're 6 oz sirloin mashed potatoes side salad bread rolls and order a sidekick of ribs. If that doesn't fill you up get the cactus bloom appetizer.

Nothing beats a good local steakhouse but Texas Roadhouse is really good for a chain imo, odd you chose their roadkill to highlight. Also spot on that Longhorn is among the best quality for price. Only been to Ruth’s Chris twice but left disappointed both times.

In my experience, I would switch places with your review of Morton's and Ruth's Cris. I have never had a bad meal at Morton's, but Ruth's Cris has been hit or miss with me.

Skip Fogo de Chao, they keep pushing the cheap cuts and you have to demand the more expensive cuts you paid for it you get the upsized meal. The meat is medium quality. Spend a little more and get a great meal at Mortons or Ruth Chris instead. Mortons should be much higher on the list.

Chainwise, Longhorn is great for lunch and Smith and Wollensky is okay for dinner. But Ruth's Chris can often disappoint. Honestly, I would prefer to eat at Texas Roadhouse with the peanuts and beer over most meals I have had at a Ruth's Chris.

I've always found Applebee's Bourbon Steak Sizzler very tasty although I wish they would use more of the seasoning. Looking forward to trying Longhorn Steakhouse & Ruth's Chris, possibly Morton's. Al the others at the top of the list I haven't heard of and they are not in my area.

Although not a chain I had dinner at a local steak house last night. Had a hard time deciding between the 24 oz Del Monico @$36.00 and the 20 oz. Porterhouse at $40.00. Went with the Del Monico. Excellent choice.

Kobe is a city and none of the cows are actually in kobe city they are far away in the hyogo mountains... Most Japanese know that Hida and Miyazaki are the most mouthwatering areas for kuroge to roam. Just because it is Kobe, doesnt make it the best cow. It all depends on the breeder, diet, etc. I can buy Kobe wagyu at my local supermarket in Osaka, but it doesnt mean its good. There is so much more that goes into it besides the marbling score and being from Kobe.

I've eaten at mortons and Ruth Chris a couple times. Mortoms was all about the presentation not the food. What a let down. Ruth Chris? Gone down hill very fast. Been there a few times and never again. If I could show pics here of my last experience I would. My favorite high end on this list would have to be capitol grille. They have stayed consistent and unlike Ruth Chris you won't see people in sweat pants hats and talking on the phone speaker on at the table next to you. I currently prefer local steak houses. Pricey but getting an excellent meal with some class for your buck. And yes longhorns is actually pretty good. Lol

The worst steak chains are Outback and Mastro's. Mastro's has no damn taste n no seasoning when steak needs plenty of seasoning no matter the quality. The best steakhouse chains are Ruth's Chris, Morton's, Fleming's, Palm Restaurant and Saltgrass.

The list is comprehensive and accurate...except for one thing. As important as the steak is are the side orders, the ambiance, etc. Even more important to some is the price. Youi wouldn't compare cars where the BMW is compared to a Chevy Nova. Sure, the Palm and Ruth's Chris are better; they'd better be. Maybe we need a new Ponderosa, or some chain using affordable hanger steak, etc.

Cut, Ruth's Chris, Fleming's, etc., which you name later are all excellent. But, for their price, you can enjoy a very good steak at Texas Roadhouse 6-8 times.

I disagree! I've been eating sirloin steaks at Outback for years, and have never had a bad one! Always tender, flavorful, and never anything inedible. I like their steaks a little better than Longhorn's. The worst steaks, by far, were at Lone Star, which doesn't even appear here. (Have they gone out of business? They should!) I tried three Lone Stars in three separate states and the steaks were all virtually inedible. I even warned the manager of the third location ahead of time of my poor prior experience, hoping that that might improve the situation, but it didn't matter, and I wound up leaving without eating it and without having to pay for it. I wonder how a chain serving food that wretched even got as far as they did?

The fact that Outback Steakhouse got the worst position on your list is not surprising at all. Both my partner and I got food poisoning from there after eating steaks on New Year's Eve a few years ago. Stay away!

For some reason, location matters a lot. There was an outback steakhouse 25 minutes away from my house where I used to work. There is also an outback steakhouse close to my house 5 minutes away. Despite that, I always go to the 25 minutes location, since they always come out with decent food. The one near my house, the soup is dry, steak is undercooked every single time. That is my experience, if you want to give a different location a try to hope for a fair judge, you could give it a shot. If not, sorry about your experience at that location.
