I like your demo of using the masking fluid on the big circle; "now you don't have to worry about painting exactly around the edge", proceeds to paint EXACTLY around the edge 😉

This video was really useful. I particularly enjoyed the fence technique, as I love rural landscapes best. I hadn't been using masking fluid for any tiny details at all, other than on flowers.

Great video Michele! It's great to see demonstrations of different ways to use masking fluid. I find it actually helps in terms of a strategy on how to map out your painting process instead of just depending on gouache to add back in your highlights.

Never used it before. I've spent most of the afternoon and evening replicating your samples and typing the instructions up. Quite pleased with it. I've bent an old spoon so it acts as a little container. Had to water the masking fluid down as it wouldn't come off the mapping pen. Not tried splattering before either. All I've heard is disaster stories of torn paper. Beginner's luck? Thank you for the videos. I'm really enjoying them

This information was really useful. I have had trouble a few times using the masking fluid. My patience ran out before the fluid was completely dry. It was a white one but it didn't come off as cleanly as yours did. I think I should practice more and leave the fluid on for a bit longer. Thank you for making these videos. You are a life saver...or a watercolour saver. Thank you so much.

Thanks Michele. I always forget about the light grasses in front one. The window payne one I'll try to remember. I could have masked the pony mane I just did but I negative painted and went light to dark instead. The paper is old and I was afraid it would tear. 💜

Hi Michele I recently opened a bottle of masking fluid that I had purchased about 4years ago the smell was awful and reminded me of smelling salts, it was also very thick, so I didn't use it, now i see I can add water, but should it smell so bad or has it gone off? I also recently purchased a bottle of the Sennelier masking fluid with the very fine tip, it should be on its way in the post. this is coincidentally a perfect video right now🙂. Have a great day!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it sounds like it's gone off. Masking fluid goes off really easy and it smells disgusting! I am sure your new one will be better!

Question. Can white crayon be a substitute for masking fluid?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use white oil pastel or candle wax but be aware it won't come off if you make a mistake and you can never paint over it so apply it carefully.
@RobertJonesWightpaint3 жыл бұрын
The late Terry Harrison used masking fluid - often, and in my opinion too often, because he really didn't need it. I hate the stuff - you cover this well, but if anyone asks me about masking - I say thrown the rotten stuff away.

How about water? I'm thinking ocean. But any water actually.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber3 жыл бұрын
I actually find it really bad for water, it's too hard. Try oil pastel resist instead it's much softer.

Yesterday, I masked an entire circle on the actual painting paper, to leave it white for moon. And as you described, it tore the paper and ruined my painting. I have seen you other video about masking fluid. Therein, you’ve clearly mentioned to it out on a scrap piece of paper prior to using it on the final paper. But me being a stubborn donkey, just didn’t follow your instructions, and ended up with a beautiful background with a torn moon on it. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
