As a vector artist who's done tons of commercial art and then creative art, I LOVE THIS. It shows how to interpret and evolve a reference. So many people don't give vector artists their due.

Thanks for the video. Suggestion, portraits are standardized in the individual parts. Example: a portrait consists of one right eye, one left eye, one top lip, one bottom lip, etc... My point is this. I would create a blank artbaord with lots of blank new layers. The layers would be labeled right eye, left eye, etc... then I would save the file blank, with all of the layers labeled. Then the next time you go to create a new portrait, you already have labeled layers to use as groups. Even if you end up with a mustache layer on a ladies portrait, who cares. This would be a big time saver if you do a lot of portraits. Same logic is good for cartoon characters. Tail, wings, fangs, ground shadow, etc... Hope that helps.

The use of the erase blend mode is a great tip I will definitely start using in my vector work. I keep my layers all organized and named too, I think it's because I originally came from web design. Thanks so much for the video and for the record you never have to apologize for dad jokes. Dad jokes are best jokes!

Just wanted to say that I love your artistic style. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out at the beginning. Frankly, I was taken by surprise a couple times by some decisions you made. Not that they were bad, just that I didn't see them coming. Of course, it turned out far, far better than anything I've ever done. What I really appreciate is that you've shown me a new, and better, way of creating portraits. And I plan on using what you've shown me in some of my upcoming projects. Thanks for taking the time to show us your process. It was definitely a learning experience!

It took me the first full three minutes up until the Pen Scribble Text thingy appeared to label the layers to realize that this has been the iPad version of Designer all along, this is great. That being said, throughly enjoying this. Great vibes too mate.

I love your energy! Great tutorial but a bit fast for a beginner like me.. I'm still trying to figure out if you draw those eyebrows and the beard so quickly or if you just sped up the recording to the need on those parts... So those hairs would take me hours!

Hey don't sweat - definitely speeded up! Relax and enjoy the process and the learning. Sure the learning curve is steep to begin with but you will develop a style and a way of working that fits you. And yes, some things can take hours but can be so worth the effort. Been using designer for a year now and loving it. Good luck. :-)

@Pope Phoenix: How to Eyedrop a Gradient: Simply select a vector with the gradient and copy it (Ctrl+C; in Windows), and then select your other vector object you want the gradient on and press, Ctrl+Shift+V (in Windows). In desktop program you can paste the gradient under menu Edit>Paste Style as well as Ctrl+Shift+V

I believe he used the pencil tool, which was set to "sculpt" mode (bottom left on the context toolbar). If you have a shape selected and start drawing on it, you can freely modify its path. It is a great function.
