Maslenitsa (also known as Butter Week, Crepe week, or Cheesefare Week) is an Eastern Slavic religious and folk holiday, celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, that is, the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Pascha (Easter).
In the end of Butter Week, the people burn in fire the Maslenitsa scarecrow which is symbolize the Winter. Burning the scarecrow is like burning off the Winter.
Also, this Sunday is the Sunday of Forgiveness. Everybody have to ask to forgive each other for possible hurts they got during the year.
In 2019, it is celebrated at the 10th of March. Traditionally the biggest area to celebrate The End of Maslenitsa is in the Central Park of Culture and Leisure at Elagin Island of St. Petersburg, Russia.

Dancing in the streets, colorful costumes, great show of horsemanship and trick riding, blacksmith exhibition showing off their wares and the lighting of a giant scarecrow with some insane snow coming down to burn away Winter. Wow was that fun to watch!

Sergey, you keep making me wish I was there! This video (as many others have) show two more things Russia and Russians have that we here in the states do not: 1)Culture (Such celebrations are frowned upon in the US partly because they are considered "pagan". Ironically most people in the US do not know what "pagan" really means. Traditionally it means "country dweller"). As for me, I very much appreciate the traditions of such old ways of belief as well. It is more based in tangible reality in line with the cycles, not to mention positive. 2) Community! (All the people dancing together having a good time). Simply amazing Sergey! Much love to all my Russki friends and acquaintances and all kind-hearted Russians!

When I was a child half way around the world from Russia living in an Island I made a "candelaria"using four posts. I then filled the space with dried grasses. In the evening at end of February my brother and I light up the candelaria shouting " Que viva St.Blass y la candelaria"...Until now I did not know it was to celebrate the end of winter... This episode was about the "Real Russia", The lively Russians from "la granjia"...Folklore! Russians so far have kept their traditions and sense of roots...Thanks for sharing this lively folklore...

When I saw the woman on the white horse,it gave me chills. It reminded me a prophecy I've heard about the future of this city that disasters will descend and perhaps partially flood the city. The disasters will go away when a blonde woman rides a white horse to circle the city 3 times and declare it's off the dangers. Believe or not,it's up to you.

Fascinating, 'witch' burning, always women, remains a populair theme in a lot of cultures, and is considered a happy ending to a story, ever since the Grimm brothers wrote fairy tales like Hans & Gretl. In Russia we never burned witches in droves. And the Church is not called to hunt them was not the Holy Inquisition. moreover, in the court of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich from 1589 they were under legal protection from possible insults with compensation of two money.Translated from the old Russian witch (vedma) means - one who knows,Our ancestors in itself knowledge of secrets of the nature did not consider that that sinful and contradicting religious beliefs the Main thing it is impossible to use them to the detriment of others or to receive monetary profit

But, Ancient Russ were sun worshippers, fire for them the personification of God Yarilo on earth. His flame purifies, frees and even revives to life at the next, higher level of development. Burning the effigy of winter , with him symbolically say goodbye finally and irrevocably and meet spring. I do not know , is in the West, idiom - burn the bridges, that is, close his way back to the past life and move only forward. Many ancient peoples have a myth about the Phoenix (ancient Russ-Fire (Ghar)bird), which is constantly reborn in the fire for a new life.
