Maslenitsa is a Slavic holiday, which combines Christian traditions and pagan rituals. This is a popular holiday in Russia, and we celebrate it even here, in the Far East. In ancient times, Maslenitsa used to be a whole week of fun before the Great Lent, which is the most important fasting season for Christians. During the week, people would carry out fist fights, dance and sing, and gorge themselves on rich food. The culmination of the holiday is burning of Winter's scarecrow, which symbolizes saying goodbye to winter and greeting spring.
I was surprised to learn that almost every country has its own version of Maslenitsa. Pancake Day, Shrovetide, Palenie Moreny and Kiszebáb égetés to name a few. I think it's fascinating that in different countries we have holidays with the same origin. So, in this video I'll show you how we celebrate Maslenitsa in Khabarovsk, Russia #Maslenitsa #PancakeDay #Russia

In Sweden we do not have Масленица, but we have several other traditional days scattered over the spring. We have 'Semmeldagen'/'Fettisdagen' in February which is the last day before the fast when we eat sweet buns with whipped cream ('Semlor'). Then we have 'Vårfrudagen'/'Våffeldagen' in March when we eat waffles. It all ends (?) with 'Valborg' the 31st of April when a large fire is burned and we celebrate the end of winter (or something) and all students get drunk 😂

In Bulgaria we have "Сирни заговезни", which was yesterday. It is celebrated in the last week (on Sunday) before starting on Monday the fasting, with which we reach Easter. People start a fire. Men have to jump over the fire. If your foot goes through the fire, it is said, that it's resistant to bite of a snake. Around the fire people play folk dances and sing. Youngsters ask for forgiveness the elders. It's a ritual, that takes place the whole Sunday and it has to be completed before dinner. Youngsters cirle elders (relatives, family members) and ask for forgiveness, saying for example: "Прощавай, мале, тате." The must answer is: "Просто да ти е, Господ да прощава". At dinner, on the table you will find dishes, made from dairy products: banitsa with white cheese, boiled eggs, halva with walnuts. Some people follow this ritual "хамкане". You take a red string, hunged from the ceiling, tie up a boiled egg and a piece of white halva or a charcoal. You start rotating the string in a circle and every single member of the family (mostly kids) tries to catch the egg with it's mouth. Ritual actions continue with divination: they set on fire the string and divine by the way it burns. The egg and the charcoal are kept for healing purposes. With the water from the boiled egg they wash their faces on the next - Cleany Monday for protection of fleas and flies.

Spring time is actually when your food from the previous harvest starts to run low and the next harvest hasn't come in yet, so to have a "lenten season" is helpful to stretch thinning food reserves until the next crops start coming in. It's all based on what was practical for people to survive in an unforgiving world and so they made a celebration out of it. That's the origin of almost all festivals and seasonal celebrations. They celebrate what makes them survive.

In Poland, we have "drowning a Marzanna", a symbol of winter. But we don't have a festival day, I think because it's most cultivated in preschool or primary school. It contains a burning and then throwing, a wooden statue / puppet (something that is easy to make by children), to the river, or some kind of a pond. Of course, Not always includes burning, 'cuse children, but there's always an activity like that. Great cooking of pancakes, mixing with a fork - classic. If you run out of ideas for a vid, you could always cook something :) Loved the music at the event tho.

In Zürich-Switzerland we have Sechseläuten: burning a figure of a snowman prepared with explosives. The roots of the festival go back to medieval times when the first day of summer working hours was celebrated in the guildhalls across the city. City ordinances strictly regulated the length of the working day in that era. During the winter semester, the workday in all workshops lasted as long as there was daylight, but during the summer semester (i.e. starting on Monday following vernal equinox) the law proclaimed that work must cease when the church bells tolled at six o'clock. Sechseläuten is a Swiss-German word that literally translates into "The six o'clock ringing of the bells". Changing to summer working hours traditionally was a joyous occasion because it marked the beginning of the season where people had some non-working daylight hours.

@@squirrel3269 I wouldn't say it's censored, just really selective & sensationalist. The only time we hear about Russia in our news is when Putin does something major, or when an airplane crashes over Russia. In terms of film & TV, it's exclusively portrayed with dark blue colour filter, dilapidated buildings, usually a Cold War setting. I took 20th Century History in high school and we spent about 2 months alone just on the Russian revolution, but after the collapse of the USSR, we learned literally nothing. And every Russian I've ever met in Canada seems to never want to talk about Russia.

Hello beautiful, In Brazil we also have the feast of "Maslenitsa" which was introduced by the Catholic and Orthodox communities in the 17th century - In Brazil it is known as Queima de Judas Iscariotes (traitor of Jesus Christ), always on the Saturday of Hallelujah, symbolizes the death of Judas ... Some politicians and dishonest people in society are also burned in the form of rag and straw puppets. Halloween or Halloween are not celebrated in Brazil, some States are prohibited to demonstrate this party, why? Halloween represents the death of Christians, Brazilian Natives and Americans by Christians of the Baptist Church or Protestants (Evangelical - Gospel). The first settlers upon arriving in Brazil began to get sick; the natives knew the herbs that heal and also nourished the body, root tea, edible roots and using quatzo crystals to energize the spirit {Your smartphone and computer micro chip is made of quatzo crystal - Beach sand is a powdered quartz crystal}. For Gospel Christians only Jesus Christ could heal the sick body! The rest was Native American Witchcraft and Magic. It is for this and other factors that Brazil does not celebrate Halloween and it is prohibited in some States of the Brazilian Federation. Kisses and hugs!

We have something called “Valborgsafton” in Sweden, to celebrate the coming of spring. We light really BIG bonfires, and party. This is a relative to the Celtic holiday called Beltane, and is old. Some 600 years ago it became sort of a Christian holiday, and was renamed after the saint Valborg. What it was called in Sweden in pagan times I don’t know. Fun fact: on Valborgs’ Eve all the witches fly to the small island called Blå jungfrun (The Blue Virgin) in the Baltic, to party with the Devil. So people say, anyway. ;)

Remember that whatever is happening between your country and Ukraine is not the Russian people’s fault but Putin regime alone. We use candy instead of cats, now a days. In Denmark “Fastelavn”. you dress up, put a cat in a barrel, hang it high. Then you take turns hitting the barrel with a bat until it breaks, and it you are the one who strike the last blow, you get crowned king of cats.
