I was there in 2014, and we saw the river come to life as guys dug it out. We didn’t see it get quite this big, but it was just so cool to watch the standing waves form and guys go in.

A big wave surfing friend almost drown here.. We lost sight of him. He ended up way down the beach throwing up. He said he just couldn`t get to the surface. And it wasn`t as big as this!

Absolutely mental! Still one of my most favourite places in the world. Spent 2 weeks on the beautiful north shore in 2013. Great vid guys.

Haha...insane...I saw it when ya'll started digging it...Nope...I kept driving east...so much water in that thing! plus 12ft shorebreak. Viewers have no idea how crazy that was.

You are right. I have no idea whether this is dangerous or not. Can't really tell. But the fact that at the end where the wave is biggest and steepest people weren't going for it suggests that this is actually sketchy? Is it easy to drown there? Break your neck?

My first experience surfing was on the little break created by the sand bar created by the river running out. Also, the first time I caught a fish was in that river there (I let it go because pilau water) I went to Waimea Bay sooooo many times as a kid!

For me it was Eastern Lake ((inlet) Seagrove FL) when it was unblocked to the gulf and when the tides changed!!

Swell and current brings all the sand back and river runoff is actually very healthy for marine ecosystems to flourish

Yeah pretty sure tides currents and waves fill in all the sand again. This happens naturally they just sped it up a little haha

I was there 3 days after this storm and while there was a low area, the sand was back and the river was blocked again. Pretty quick

The overflow eventually happens. It’s part of the rainy season, probably one more strong rain would have triggered what they did. I live in at a beach in Nicaragua where this happens every year in all rivers.

@@pregooooooooskio add to that, if the river is not emptied before it gets this full many homes up waimea valley get flooded. This past rainfall caused flooding because they didn’t breach it in time

pushed/pulled out by the river when they break the natural dam formed by the sand, but the ocean does dump all the sand off eventually.

I shattered my collarbone on my honeymoon on that beach one winter. It’s called “breakneck beach” for a reason. Most beautiful place in the summer with no waves when I went back. Got to swim with dolphins.

I got an ear infection out that way and the doc gave me a handful of blue antibiotic pills, he handed them out like candy, probably gave me 30, and said on chocolate days to take a gram after surf, once, to knock out whatever, lepto, dunno, other bacterias. seemed sketchy but I did take them once or twice I think. mason got the natural immunity

At the other end of a bitch is a humongous rock like 20 feet high, and people jump off of it into the bay. I found it first on KZbin I think they call it jumping rock. If you get a chance you really need to go there. Mahalo👍
