I have a story to tell about my mama. I was young but I remember this. We put snap beans up and the dining room table was full of quart jars. The jars started exploding as they cooled and mama was up set and wrote a letter to Ball Mason jar company. They wrote her back and ask if she would mail some of the jars to them. Week's past then a letter and two cases of quart jars arrived at our house. The letter told mama how sorry they were and please except this jars as a revert this happened. It also stated that even jars wear out they were from the forties. I am in my sixties now so we are old school and must say really enjoy listening as I work.

Thank you for this common sense video. I definitely lack that sometimes. I lost a jar of blueberry jam. I heard a poof. Then started seeing the stuff in the canner. I had just brought these jars too. Please listen to him. I saw a little something on the side of the jar and still went through washing, sterilizing and canning with it. Time and expense of not using common sense wasn't worth it. And some people are just getting started. This could save them aggravation and money. Yes, Thanks Jamey, for more "useful knowledge" No pun intended.

Thank you for this and don't want to bother you but could you possibly do one on lids please? I've had a few not seal and I must be missing something when checking them. Thank you and have a wonderful day. :-)

Hi. About lids….I never reuse a lid. I always check the lids for scratches or weird issues with the rubber compound. About the jars not sealing, if you are using the the method that I use which is the open kettle method, make sure you are getting the hot product into the hot jar quickly and getting the lid on. If you let the product cool down before getting it in the the jars and lids on, it won’t seal. Hope that helps!

I appreciate you for sharing your useful knowledge. Question??? What are the best jars to use… Kerr or Ball?
@useful.knowledge2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I use both Ball and Kerr. They are equally good. If I’m making a jelly that is I want to give as gifts, I like to use Kerr because you can see the nice jelly.

Thanks Jamie. Never busted a jar but have a lid blow off while making chili beans. What a mess. God Bless and stay safe.

I do the same thing with a black sharpie, marking an "x" on the imperfect jars. Then I just use them for my sweet tea.

Thanks for the useful knowledge. I didn’t find any cracks, but I had a lot of lids that were dented and stained. How often can you reuse your lids? I read where another you tuber said you should use them only once, then throw them away!
@useful.knowledge2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I never re-use the lids. I re-use the rings but not the lid. My reasoning is that lids are cheap and I’ve got time and $ invested to the jam, jelly, or tomatoes. Great question!
@kathleendabney27402 жыл бұрын
@@useful.knowledge Ok, so am I putting myself and others at risk for botulism for reusing the lids? Sometimes it is hard to fine lids with everybody starting to do canning. I wash them is hot soapy water, then boil them. I’ve had no problems with them sealing. Nobody has gotten sick so far. I can jelly, pickles, salsa and jalapeños peppers.
@useful.knowledge2 жыл бұрын
Honestly it sounds like you are doing the right things if someone was going to reuse lids. To answer your question, the answer is no you are not putting anyone at risk of botulism if the jars are sealing and staying sealed. Now that lIds are coming back to the stores, it’s a good time to stock up on new lids. Also, folks on eBay have new lids. I only use Kerr, Ball, or Golden Harvest lids.
@kathleendabney27402 жыл бұрын
@@useful.knowledge Thanks. I only use ball canning products. I never tried Kerr. The lids go off the shelf fast here. I don’t want to be greedy and take all of them, like some people do, I share. I don’t like to order online, you take a chance of never receiving your packages. People have the b…. To come on your property and take your packages. I just go to the next town over looking for canning stuff.

That’s definitely understandable. I’m the same way about hoarding canning products. I honestly don’t like to buy more than I need. I will get one or two boxes at a time but always have about six boxes in my cabinet. My local Foodland grocery stores, Ace Hardware, and Tractor Supply have them now in north Alabama. They really just got in a couple weeks ago.

Hi. It does happen. They can be dropped by stockers at the store or even hit by forklifts when in the big boxes.
