In this video, Alex gives his first impressions of the DeWalt DCPS620 Cordless 20V pole saw. We have always used a manual pole saw and pole lopper for tree trimming around the farm, but this is a HUGE leap forward and is much easier and faster. If you're on the DeWalt battery system, and have more than a few trees to trim on your property, you'd be crazy not to have one! It retails for about $150, but will save you hours of time, hassle, sweat over a manual saw. Find a used one for cheap and snatch it up!
P.S. Alex learned a great audio lesson in this video - a tiny GoPro mic is terrible beyond arms length! Apologies for the quiet audio in a couple sections 🙁

Great review, thanks for sharing! Quick tip, make a small cut underneath the branch, then cut from the top, it'll help the branch fall cleanly without dangling and falling back towards you on most cuts.

We live on an acreage with many trees. I used mine for the first time yesterday and it performed beyond my expectations.. Very simple to operate and I was impressed with how large of limbs it will take down. I found that once you set the bar on the limb and engage the motor it does all the work for you. Very easy to control. Agreed: something I like to spend money on is tools.

Glad to hear it worked well for you! I agree that the weight of the saw up high helps with cutting. Can't believe I ever cut down limbs with a manual polesaw, I'm breaking a sweat just thinking about it.. -Alex

Also, yes having the motor on the cutting head is nice, but puts more weight out far which makes the saw more unwieldy. Also makes it less able to get into tight limb configurations. Stihl has the motor at the bottom. And the cutting head is slim enough to fit in tight areas.
@MasonDixonAcres

All good points, I'm sure for a pro-grade pole saw, Stihl is the winner.

@@MasonDixonAcres not saying Stihl is the best. Just noting some big differences. Some applications dewalt may be better. Some applications Stihl may make it easier. Just up to the operator preference for his/her use case.

I bought this DeWalt (my first) and you are so right about the weight at the top. Very hard to control after the limb is cut...especially if you are standing on a ladder and reaching! The Stihl was $400 and I paid $230 "on sale" for the DeWalt. But of course the Stihl is US-made!

Fantastic review and video production... Thank you! Looking at buying a pole saw and for me, its between the Dewalt and the Stihl HTA50. Both seem to be great saws with the main differences being cost and chain RPM. The Stihl has a slighly faster chain rotation which equates to quicker cuts, but the price is higher, roughly $100 more. The insight gleaned from your video has convinced me to purchase the Dewalt instead.

Very professional video and review. Be sure to make some cuts on the bottom of bigger limbs, then cut from the top toward the bottom cut so you don't "tear" the limb or get it stuck up there. Also, when the limb breaks, you can get the blade stuck and potentially damaged if it gets pinched. Husqvarna and Stihl both have a ton of very good videos on the use of chainsaws that everyone can learn from!

As some others in the comments have suggested, make a small upcut on the bottom of the limb first, then cut down from the top. Even before learning this however, I never got pinch stuck. Usually pinching happens with logs on the ground or supported on both ends, while attached branches are only supported on one end.

Thanks for sharing, mate! ~~~IMPORTANT NOTICE!!! According to Dewalt Service Tech, "the pole saw (even brand new) MUST be stored horizontally with cap upright (cardboard piece under chain mechanism for extra protection) to prevent chain oil leakage. Otherwise, drain the chain oil if you're not willing to store in this recommended manner." I lost the entire oil reservoir twice upon 1st two usages because I stored it vertically in the box. Dewalt, IMO, should put this oil warning info in BOLD LETTERING under oil section of owner's manual. I had to call a Dewalt Service Center to get the skinny on this nugget of truth. p.s. DO NOT RIG THE TRIGGER...ANY FATHER OF YOUNG CHILDREN WOULD ADVISE AGAINST THAT!
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I have never heard it needed to be stored horizontally. That is a pain, it's much easier to hang on a nail on the wall. I never did mess with the trigger, not worth the hassle for the few times a year I have to use the saw.

I was really considering buying this pole saw for my business cause the price was great compared to other brand saws. The kit with 5Ah battery and charger is around 400€ here in Europe.. But ultimately I gave up on it because of 2 things. First is the fact that it isn't telescopic. In other words you have to screw in an extension rod and this is impractical and takes time. Also the reach, even with the extension rod is not impressive... The second important reason was the cutting power. It's abysmal. Chain speed is like 6 or 7m/sec which is terrible.. My Makita battery chainsaw, which is also 18V, has the 20m/sec chain speed. This means that DeWalt pole saw cuts slow and doesn't have power to cut 5-6" wood... You may ask why I didn't buy the Makita pole saw given that I already have their batteries and charger.. Well, the price. Makita pole saw (and they only have the twin 18V model) is 700€ bare tool. In the end I decided to buy the Oregon pole saw. The kit including 6Ah battery and charger was 500€ and the thing is a beast. I would recommend DeWalt to home owners that don't have to cat branches that are over 20 feet. Ultimately DeWalt pole saw is a disappointment since I thought DeWalt makes professional and commercial grade stuff. This pole saw is far from it..

I bought a pole saw that has the motor by the chain. I don't like it at all. It makes it hard to get into the tree in tight places. Mine is not Dewalt or cordless ,it's a worx that was suppose to double as a normal electric chain saw it's way to bulky. It's a lot of work after a while. I would recommend a pole saw with the motor down low. Easier to maneuver. It was the worst purchase I ever made.

I can see where you're coming from, I actually used to have a cheap Worx weed wacker and it was pretty garbage. I haven't noticed the motor getting in the way much, but I'm also not too picky about how close to the trunk I'm cutting branches. I agree that the less mass up high, the easier it will be to handle.

Why would you say the cost on the tools. If I were the person who helped you - I’d be pissed that you shared internal information on your channel.

I’d buy one if I got the discount lol

Haha yeah that certainly made it an easy decision. Without the discount I would have tried to find one used for the same price

Oil reservoir leaks somewhere besides the cap draining the whole Reservoir in the resting position, from the very beginning out-of-the-box, totally messy and annoying
@MasonDixonAcres

I’ve tried looking at it closely and I think it’s the oiling port for the bar in my case. I am going to try the O ring around the cap that others have suggested and see if that helps anything

How many extensions can you add to it can you make it as long as you can?
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres 3 жыл бұрын
In theory, yes I believe so. But at full reach with the extension you can probably limb up to 20', and there aren't many trees you need to limb higher than that with a homeowner setup. It will be SUPER heavy and hard to handle with more than one extension.

Works well, the higher the branches the more cumbersome it becomes. kzbin.infoUgkxHMc_g3gGUpXsBlcRniL7qDnlxwo192gi It’s very top heavy. Better have some spare batteries near by. Worked very well for the job I had

Do not remove the safety clip from the trigger. It is there for a reason. If it slips and your hand grabs the handle you cut your child’s arm off opps.

You're right it is certainly advice for 'at your own risk'. There is still the main safety, just keep your children away! -Alex
