Mike never half-ass any job; he always full assess all jobs. In this case, his "patch" is actually rebuilding an entire wall. Nice.

You've got it right with the patch jobs you do. Too many masons around here either want to tear too much out or tear it all the way down to make it perfect. When the truth is 99% of people don't know what they're looking at in masonry work. They just don't want holes in the walls. Just get it in there and get the money. Helped me out alot on weekend side jobs just getting in and out. "Rough but strong"

I hope that question makes sense, if not I can send you a picture of what I mean. Thank you!!

Those look like settlement cracks. Probably there is no footer, or if there is it's not deep enough in the ground to withstand freeze-thaw.. Or something must have hit it, because it's just that side of the building. maybe a small loader or backhoe bumped it?.

For such a small structure I would have considered taking the top two courses of block off stuffed each cell with a stick of rebar and then filled the cells with rebar then reinstall the top two courses with lateral rebar. Cosmetically may not come out perfect but should bombproof it from any further separation ?

I bet that mortar was masonry-cement with too much air in it; that's why it didn't stick to the block. That ready-mix cement made by Quikrete that you used to rebuild it is a portland-lime cement and will stick much better.👍.. I used to work in a cement lab, I know these things. ..... it's got to be really bad mortar not to stick to cmu (which is essentially is portland cement too).
@MikeHaduck5 жыл бұрын
Hi bonanz, you know I get a lot of questions on the cement, and I did a video called Should I wet it first, but it has to be wet to stick properly, and mortar don't hold up in my area, I want to do another video on what cement should I use,? because there is a ton of controversy over it, but I found working in all these different states not two masons agree unless they are local to each other, thanks, mike

I'd rather build a utility shed for any with machinery inside out of blocks. One issue may have been a lack of extra ventilation. The shed has utilities feeding it. I'm thinking heat and moisture resulted. Then there is the concern about foundation. Mike mentioned he patched it before. And it's sited on a sloped location. Really like his use of durawall to reinforce the courses.
