Mass Effect 2: Combat Drone Comparison (Engineering the Asylum)

Which drone is best? It's not as obvious as you'd think. Also, my poll for which guide you want next is up:

@UchihaItachi8989 Good job finding a single instance to support your point. Here's some real math: Total Damage done by attack drone, 1840 (It attacks 46 times). Total Damage done by the explosive drone, 1800. And I was going out of my way to use explosive more. Time it takes for me to clear the section: AD ~3:00 mins, ED ~ 4:00 Amount of Damaga ED would have done if it was an AD: 2120 (based on number of attacks).

@ThatAverageGatsby This level also favors the ED. Its an enclosed close range area. Thats why I picked it. If this was mordins loyalty to any mission with geth, tali's recruitment, or any other open air level, it wouldn't have even been close. I'm still taking it one the reaper IFF, and I'm probably going to test both on the suicide run, but spamming drone on harbinger results in really low DPS. Spamming Incinerate does more damage vs barriers (1.5x mult) and way more damage vs armor (2.4 mult).

I think whole point of Combat Drone is to act as a decoy, not as damage dealer. When you say Explosive Drone isn't dying quick enough, it also means it keeps one enemy occupied by making him/her/it stagger backwards (which is very useful for flushing enemies out of their covers).. and if your drone grabs enemy attention while it's flanking the enemy, enemies often expose their backs to your and your teammates (which means easy shots).

explosive drones get enemies out of cover and do distract them, even when dying. so yeah, this video shows the single way of playing where an attack drone is more useful... i often use drones AND weapons AND powers while playing Insanity. You just have to increase your total damage output at some missions... and that´s when you won´t have a drone fight against a single enemy. You use it to get enemies out of cover, then stun them with powers/strip their defenses and then you just shoot them.

I'd take blast to help you deal with husks. The aoe can strip the armor and then some cryo ammo shots will freeze insta-kill them. The damage bonus from Heavy is nice, but a single cloaked widow shot does way more anti-armor damage than an incinerate.

Buster - an excellent choice! It expresses up pretty much everything a drone is capable of. I'm looking forward to seeing buster in action. BTW: the technical quality (i.e. resolution, not content!) of this video is lower than usual. Will it be upgraded?

I do want to point out AG hit with incinerate a couple less times on the explosive drone run than the AD run. He was casting it more often as he was trying to get it to die - that in turn incurs an opportunity cost of a few seconds where he could fire. Time has value, and time spent recasting drone is time spent not shooting/overloading/incinerating. This arises due to wierdness that the drone with higher HP is the one you want to die more, so you intentionally kill it, and recast it.

@UchihaItachi8989 Good points. If your drone dies often and is within range of multiple enemies when it happens, it is the better choice. From how I've played the last 10-15 videos or so, for me, my drone doesn't die quick enough or near enough for groups for this to work. I like to attack the same target as my drone more than I like to put it with a group and then move to other targets. But I'll be doing another comparison video so I'm not done yet.

@IcoKirov and some will say... this is not much of a difference...... but i have to say most of the time i killed the enemies before the drone even exploded... so it didnt any dmg, just when i use explosion dron it looks to me that i use combat drone just for the distraction. and i may be wrong but i think some of the time it didnt explode when it was destroyed... i dont know why but many times when i see it dying, it just collapse and no dmg to the surroundings... this has to be wrong but...

I test it with Tali not with engineer + it depends on how you build your characters level 4 Rank (power duration or power damage)

Nice I just recently beat Mass Effect 1 on insane with my level 70 character not to hard but still tough I would just go packing with Ashley and a strong biotic and I beat in 1 12 hour go from start to finish

the attack drone is way better... why? well i used the explosive on some missions where it is suppoused to be great to use it... and still i didnt find it usefull at all... most of the time they didnt attack her so hard to destroy it and it just expired... O.o or if it explode after about 10-15 seconds it hits one, maybe two enemies... that makes 100-200 dmg (100 most of the time...) so for 12 seconds the attack drone would have hit 5 times so 200 dmg... (240 for 15 seconds)

Explosive drone should do more DMG if you read the(Ability Evolution)but unfortunately attack drone its a little bit better cuz the explosion is not so big its like a bug in the game it's doing less things than it says 😉

I don't think so; hacking, drone, and dominate means you are like a puppet master on the field and can make difficult encounters very easy. The engineer was by far the easiest class for me to play!
