Curious side-note: if Shepard dies during the assault on the Collector base, that's it. The galaxy is completely screwed...but not right away. The Arrival DLC, where Shepard destroys the Alpha Relay? If Shepard doesn't do it, an Alliance spec ops regiment infiltrates batarian space and destroys it (but all die in the process). The Reapers attack Earth and the rest of Council space much like normal, but instead of Shepard, Anderson is forced to take command of the Normandy. He's still a total raging badass so he still goes to Mars, meets Liara and retrieves the Crucible plans, just like Shepard does. Unfortunately, without Anderson to lead them, the resistance on Earth is much weaker. Anderson still goes to the Council, still presents the Crucible as a way to stop the Reapers, and the ragged remnants of the Alliance navy begin construction of it. Anderson goes to Palaven and (on account of aforementioned badassery) still rescues Primarch Victus. However, the war summit is where things begin to fall apart. Anderson is not Shepard. He simply doesn't have what it takes to cure the Genophage. He doesn't have the uncompromising drive required to browbeat the salarians into forcing them to give up Eve, and even if he did, Anderson isn't fast enough to save her from Cerberus. Even if he did save Eve, Anderson isn't insane enough to actually charge a Reaper, never mind actually kill the thing by summoning Kalross. The Genophage is not cured. The krogan refuse to help the turians. As a result, the turians are trapped in a brutal war of attrition against the Reapers, their vast navy being ripped apart day by day. The turians are unable to help the humans, while the salarians and asari, terrified, merely stay in their own space and fortify their borders. The galaxy remains divided. Anderson isn't fast enough to save the Council. Kai Leng kills Kaidan/Ashley and the Council in one fell swoop. Udina's coup fails regardless, as a team of Spectres assassinate him before he can do any more damage. A new Council is rapidly formed, but due to the treachery of the humans, they are kicked off the Council and the Alliance is ostracised. Suffice to say that Anderson won't be able to sort out the quarian/geth situation either. With all that, there simply isn't enough time to finish the Crucible before the Reapers overwhelm the Council races and conquer all the major homeworlds. Anderson dies during one of the most desperate battles, the Normandy being destroyed by a Reaper. The harvest continues unabated until, more than a century later, it's done. Everyone is gone. All that remains of humanity is contained within a newly forged Reaper, while Earth becomes a deserted ruin, a curious mystery for the next cycle. ...All because Shepard was too cheap to buy some upgrades for the Normandy. Never be a cheapskate while saving the galaxy, folks.

I would argue that without Shepard, there would still be one last flicker of hope in Liara's Time-Capsule project. This cycle would be doomed, but Liara would ensure the future cycle would have a chance of defeating the Reapers.

Anderson would fail at the Genophage not because of lack of drive, but because he's not as good of a diplomat. Shepard has those skills built up with so many years of working with the Krogan, and I think Anderson would struggle in that sense. Also lack of a close Krogan friend would mean he would be more willing to see the genophage not being cured as a "necessary cost".

The biggest snag is that technically there is no Normandy to take. In this dark timeline, it’s a Cerberus ship. In all likelihood it would be headed by Kai Leng.

In his youth, Anderson might have come close to Shepard in terms of drive and skill, but by Mass Effect 3, he looks like he hits the 50s. Considering what you have to do to defeat the Reaper on Tuchanka, I think he would have struggled. His diplomatic qualities aren't that bad honestly, but he has less charisma and probably that he's somewhat less tenacious. I think that the right place for him at this time was being a field commander and you see how successful this guy is in ME3. He transformed a ragtag group of surviving marines, improvised guerillas and militians into a battle hardened and diciplined army. He's absolutely loved by his men and women and he has the autority of a first rate officer. He might not be young enough to run from the huge mechanical legs of a Reaper destroyer, but he's hell of a tactician and leader of men.

You had good judgement with who to pick for each leg of the mission and doing the side quests to upgrade stuff. Also I think a lot of people didn't think the loyalty missions were that crucial to the story in their first playthrough.

You can actually play the entire Mass Effect trilogy so badly that almost everybody dies, and the epilogue with the crew putting the placard with Shepard’s name on the Normandy Crew Memorial has almost no characters in it. Everyone is dead but Joker. BioWare evidently never considered that and the character who actually puts the placard up is now missing, so in the secret ending of Mass Effect what happens is Joker, probably the last living person in the galaxy, finally awakens his psychic powers and somberly he levitates Shep’s name onto the memorial. It’s one of my favorite things ever.

Was somewhat confused by how that could happen, but...Tali and Garrus can die in 2, or Tali can die on Rannoch, you never actually have to recruit Javiik, the Virmire survivor can get killed during Udina's coup, Edi will die if Destroy is picked, and that leaves James and Cortez to die on Earth if you don't have enough assets...wow. Can Traynor die at some point, though?

so it doesnt show it in this vid, but Morinth's death quote (the same place where Tali's death here) is actually kinda heartbreaking. in her last moments, she actually says that she's happy she got to do one good thing, and save someone, before she died. it's a sort of mini-redemption for her and when I first saw that in a vid I was like "OH MY GOD."

Among all of my many times playing the series I have one very interesting playthrough I planned out for ME2. One where Shepherd was the "ONLY" survivor of the game. It's involved doing only certain loyalty missions, choosing Morinth over Samara, not upgrading the ship and of course making the wrong choices during the Suicide Mission. In the end I was left with only Morinth and Zaeed surviving, followed by killing Zaeed while doing his loyalty mission post-suicide mission. It made for an interesting ME3 by only having Shepherd and what little you had to choose from for a squad. I also made every possible wrong choice to carry over from ME1 and 2 and continued the trend through out all of ME3. It is my most cursed playthrough and I'm proud of it :)

Yes, my most cursed playthrough was: How empty can I leave this Galaxy. Kill Wrex, Kill the Rachnis, kill the colonist at Zhu's Hope, Cause a mess on Noveria, let the council die, Destroy the Genophage cure, Destroy the Heretics, Mess up the Suicide mission until only Tali and Morinth were still up, Sacrifice the crew. Sabotage the genophage cure, Pick the Geth over the Quarian, watch Tali die, then pick the Destroy ending so the Geth end up dead anyway.

I've done a similar playthrough to this on purpose. Killed Kaidan in ME1. Killed Zaeed, Garrus, Mordin, Miranda, Jacob, and Thane on the suicide mission, sold Legion to Cerberus, and didn't wake up Grunt in ME2. And finally, Had Kasumi blow up and die on her mission, Had Tali kill herself on Rannoch, let Samara shoot herself, Shot Ashely on the Citadel, didn't do Grissom Academy so Jack got turned into a Phantom and I had to kill her in the Cerberus base, Betrayed Wrex for the Salarians and killed him after Tuchunka, had Javik look at the echo shard so he'd kill himself in the end, took Liara and James on the last mission with no war assets so they both died, and then did the Destroy ending to kill EDI. "Successfully" completed the series with 0 squadmates in the end to tell the tale... What a hero

Fun fact: Taking a non-loyal Miranda to the final fight is one of the few ways for her to die, she takes survival priority in a number of situations. For example: - if you take her as a squadmate in the biotic bubble, she'll always be the squadmate to run ahead (meaning your other squadmate will always be the one to die) - if she's chosen as the squad leader for the second fireteam she'll always survive, loyal or not.

Having played both a pure paragon and pure renegade Shepard separately, I can say I prefer playing a mix. In fact, I prefer playing mostly renegade with some paragon choices. Only a small handful of the renegade choices are what I would call "immoral" or "evil." Most of the time, it's just Shepard being a badass. Even when you play through and see some of the renegade dialogue choices, they might look like they're harsh or mean or downright insulting, so many people avoid picking them. But most of the time what Shepard actually says and how they say it aren't nearly as bad as the text might have looked. And renegade choices don't actually have an effect on keeping everyone alive on the suicide mission. You can play purely renegade the entire time and keep everyone alive. Their survival all comes down to the three Normandy upgrades (Shields, armor and guns), they're loyalty to Shepard and the specialists you choose on the mission. It's probably common for some first time players that one or maybe two characters might die simply because there's some choices you maybe didn't know you make that contribute to their survival. Like, for example, my first time playing Jack died because I didn't fully realize that the two squad members I took with me meant that the rest would basically be at risk holding the line. So I just took Garrus and Grunt with me because they were my favorites. However, Garrus and Grunt are two of your toughest fighters. So when I took them with me, it meant the team holding the line was too weak and Jack was killed. However, I simply don't believe anybody got everyone killed their first time through. It takes and true commitment to failure and poor decisions to get EVERYONE killed.

This is ending is easily the worst because you actively have to be terrible in order to get it. The perfect ending is probably easier to obtain than this.

I like these characters so much I have never been able to go for the worst case ending even just to see it. I can't let em die. I've tried several times but my resolve always crumbles.

I don't know if you've been told or if you care but there's a nifty flowchart you can look up that shows how the suicide mission can play out. But basically, you need the shields/armor/weapon normandy upgrades. If you select someone for a role they have to be the right fit AND loyal. The only exception I know of is the tech specialist CAN survive if they aren't loyal but only if the squad leader is the right pick and loyal. Any squadmate that goes with you on the final run of the mission that isn't loyal will die. For the escort, they just have to be loyal. And for the ground team at the end, they don't ALL have to be loyal but the more "strong" fighters you have that ARE loyal, the likelier it is everyone survives.

I haven't played this in years and don't remember who died on my first playthrough. But I do remember Tali and Morton's deaths in Mass Effect 3. My co-worker at the time got the same Tali and Morton death as I did while he was playing with his young niece. He told her that snow was little pieces of Morton. But with Tali's death, she started to cry so they hit reset. You all know the death I'm talking about. 😂

My first playthrough was very loose. No upgrades to my ship so I automatically lost some squad there. I also lost Dr. Chakwas and everyone else because I waited. I really had no clue! 😅 Of course I immediately ran through the entire game again afterwards, for the better ending.

4:00 a video practically says that throughout the story Jacob gives advice that gets squad killed and it's not even his biggest flaw so here's the deal, those not loyal will die depending upon who is where, I managed to save everyone with one non loyal squad member. so it's unclear if any were loyal here

I'm glad that you reacted to this ending instead of doing it yourself because that would be painful to watch and yeah, like I say before is great that you enjoyed the game and I really hope that at the end of the trilogy you're still interested in this universe because there is some content that would expand what you know and even there is a Mass Effect in the works that would continue the story, so thank you for playing and enjoying this games so much. I was playing it right after original release without DLC teammates to support our crew with extra options and without any hints - obviously people got nothing at this point. Lost a couple of people because I missed some upgrades and decisions at the and was pretty tough when you don't have ultimate knowledge about Mass Effect lore or hints. Second run with full version of game and different decisions was amazing, one of the my favorite games. Oh yeah, BTW if Shepard died in ME2, ME3 will not allow you to import savegame and you have to start from the scratch or stick with default preset story. 👌

It's actually super difficult to make a good looking custom male shepard. It's possible, but you have to literally spend an hour or 2 on that creation screen. It's why a lot of people just look up character codes for a good one.
