No, that's clearly a moral point. Torture is wrong, no matter how you look at it, but for different reasons. If it produced results, than it would be a logical but immoral thing. Since it doesn't even do that, both logic and morality do not accept it
@BIGESTblade

They all are missing the point. This torture isn't about geting information. It's about intimidation. They beat this one up so the others know what happens if they do not behave themselves. Stories are useful for mercs, the more scary stories people tell about them, the more people fear them, the more others fear a merc the higher will be his check.

I really like Zaeed's line here. It's so rare to get the effect on the torturer discussed whatsoever, in anything. Usually it's all focused on the victim and the results, the torturer is just a background prop. But when you could be creating a monster just as bad or possibly even worse than whatever their victim did... and summed up so succinctly, too. Valuable perspective.

While not the same situation, Akame ga Kill had a good example on what jobs like these can do to the psyche. The man in question was the executioner at a prison, every day he would go and lop the heads off of dozens if not hundreds of people at the chopping block a *day*. Their screams for mercy and salvation haunted the executioner to the point of madness.

The Geth exterminated every Quarian that couldn’t find a way off Rannoch in the Morning War and spent the next three centuries killing any organic entering former Quarian space, including emissaries sent to open diplomatic relations with them. When the heretics departed from them, they neither warned the galaxy at large nor made any communication disowning them or their actions for two years after Sovereign’s attack on the Citadel, leaving everyone to think there was no distinction. It’s only through this offshoot’s (Legion’s) experiences outside their enclave that they come to understand the concept of individuality in the first place. Wouldn’t expect him to be excessively sentimental.

I want a castle in the clouds where I can look down over the world. I want to be six-and-twenty again. When I was six-and-twenty I could fight all day and fuck all night. What men want does not matter. Winter is almost upon us, boy. And winter is death. I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned's little girl than alone and hungry in the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. No one sings songs of men who die like that. As for me, I am old. This will be my last winter. Let me bathe in Bolton blood before I die. I want to feel it spatter across my face when my axe bites deep into a Bolton skull. I want to lick it off my lips and die with the taste of it on my tongue''

You know. One of the things i liked MOST about ME series, especially in 3 is how they dealt with morality. Looking back at this video here was particularly interesting .. Mass Effect 2 came out in 2010. It took a Senate report in 2015 to let us know that Torture was a waste of time and that you would get bad data... However 2010, in a VIDEO game, 2 characters ( Garrus and Legion) pointed this out.

Though knowing him, he probably just intimidated them by just coming in and sitting in an aggressive stance and speaking as if he's ready to snap them in half at any given second, then he started asking questions and all of a sudden, he threw the table to the other side of the room and just stood over them, roaring at them to speak else he starts with the hard stuff. Worst case scenario, he'd grab the guy's head and push a blade right against his neck, ready to slit his throat, and then the guy speaks. So basically intimidation tactics, not actual torture. It really doesn't sound like Garrus. Then again, the whole Sidonis incident didn't sound like Garrus either, but we're talking pre-Reapers Garrus.

It has been proven that interrogating a prisoner in a way that he feels confortable and understood will make him willing to give the information to the interrogator. If that fails there are several ways of psicological manipulation that can be used in such a case, which people could also sorta argue as inmoral, but if you ask me its much better than completely ruining someone over a little piece of information that may or may not be useful.

@@timothypeterson4781 Considering you can get a complete rando to admit he's secretly the Pope incognito in some satellite Soviet State for some reason with just a little torture, I have my serious doubt anyone can be saved with that some method that reliably output that level of unreliable information. On the other hand, small doses of tetrahydrocannabinol is proven to make people more upbeat and more chatty. Giving smokers a THC-laced cig and letting them believe it's only a normal, untampered with cig, and then acting friendly to them and letting them chatter away happily and nodding and giving a few approving comments has proven to be much more effective at actually getting useful information, out of people than torture. You could argue it's immoral to drug people against their will and/or without their knowledge, and I would agree with that, but when it does less damage than straight up torture while *ALSO* being more reliable at getting actual information, yeah, weed >> torture. As the saying goes, "everyone has the right to remain silent. Few people have ever demonstrated the ability.". Get people comfy, get people talking, and you'll be surprised what they'll tell you.

@@antonhallergren588 No crime can ever excuse the use of torture, that's the point of having principles and morals : following them no matter the situation, if you're willing to break them, you just broke them forever. Also punitive justice has never worked, former societies had much more horrible punishments to dissuade criminals, but it never worked, you'd have to get rid of the underlying causes of crimes for that (example with pedophiles - most if not all were also victims of child abuse, which is a well known cause of criminality). Either you can rehabilitate someone or you isolate them from society, punishments and torture don't magically turn people into kind and friendly individuals, in fact it generally makes them worse, and it doesn't help society either, by that logic, it's pointless and counterproductive.

@Gi Gi torture isn't necessarily needlessly causing pain, unless the intent is punishment. In the video they said that the tortured would give up false information but I say that's only if they're innocent, if they got the right guy then they will give up the right information in hopes of being let go. If the scientists had their way they would torture all Geth for what they did to them and like I said, if it wasn't for Shepard being the water to cool the fire then it probably would come to pass and Tali would join them for failing to join Shepards team and actually getting to know Legion.
@thesixthkid7689
@thesixthkid7689 3 жыл бұрын
@Gi Gi actually the guilty break and give up the truth, the innocent however yeah, that's true. They'll say whatever the torturerer wants to hear for the pain to stop. Main reason why people were burned at the stake in real life for being "witches" or possessed by demons when in reality they either had seizures or were in pain by diseases so they made medicine. Often times however they relied on confessions so they were tortured and NOW it's pretty fucking obvious they were innocent so they cracked and said yeah they were witches and demons. No one stood up for them either because both the accused and the person who stood for them would die. Back then because everything was so unreliable it's difficult to find someone who was actually guilty but if you did they would definitely give up the truth, and wish you would die in the most slowest and gruesome death in possible existence but the truth all the same for the pain to stop.
@thesixthkid7689
@thesixthkid7689 3 жыл бұрын
@Gi Gi that's one variable that goes with even normal interrogation, deals or simple transactions, you may be doing the wrong person and wasting your time. Much like an innocent being interrogated and coerced to confess, not tortured, just interrogated. Obviously they were wronged and the real criminal got away. The actual criminal will know the real facts, keep their guard up so they ain't falling for coercion as easily. How you know what they say is real is what you know as hidden facts that no one else should know unless they're guilty.

I can't help but love Thane's words here the best, Garrus, Zaeed, and Legion give the most direct and true answers about the ineffectiveness of torture.
