I really love how Garrus is like a mirror for Shepard to look into. If you're a paragon player, he mirrors your decisions. As a renegade, he agrees with that "ruthless calculus." Great character.

lagger jane Garrus is more of an apprentice to Shepard. He questions you a lot in ME1 but he listens to your answers and tries to understand them. Likewise his time as Archangel was him trying to follow Shepard's example. When that failed, he went back to Shepard. He is Shepard's younger brother.

after this dialogue I just realized how great as character he is, the best fellow you can ask for
@ChallengerAmenochiyuki4 жыл бұрын
Actually that's a reason why the character design is quite bad in these scenarios. If they answer the same both ways it completely removes their identity. Mordin is the only character in the entire game to assess his own actions regardless of the fact that you are Shepard. Even if you convince him to not cure the genophage, he doesn't do so because you're Shepard so you would know whats best. He does so because he truly thinks that Salarian aid for the catalyst would be instrumental as well as leadership of the krogan under Wreav would be extremely detrimental. This gives Mordin actual character identity and he's not just going to go along with what you say or do just because you're the protagonist or hero. You can make decisions and some characters will either like or dislike it but they will never attempt to question you on it further. If I sabotaged the genophage and killed Mordin, I wouldn't want Garrus to react with a "you did what you had to do" attitude, when in the curing of the genophage he believes you made the right decision and is even grateful for it because he is good friends with Wrex.
@ChallengerAmenochiyuki4 жыл бұрын
In short, I don't want Garrus to be a reflection of the person I have already been playing as the entire time, you specifically need him to be someone who can provide a second opinion to you. That's what you ideally need from all of the characters. Some of them may agree with your decisions and some of them may not but they need to at least be consistent about it in both playthroughs. Otherwise, renegade is just "ends justify the means" and everyone agrees with you or paragon is "we can't sacrifice our humanity in the process" and everyone agrees with that.

Wrex and Eve are the hope for the Krogan. In ME 1 Wrex says he has given up on his race, but when a cure pops up, rationality goes out the airlock. Wrex can help direct Krogan aggression into something positive for the galaxy, instead of just being one massive war machine. Bakara on the other hand can reign in Wrex’s impulsive nature. Add into the fact that she is the voice of the female clans, they may do the reverse of Quarians when I comes to children. Encourage their population for having fewer kids, and threats of these laws are broken. While two Krogan may not do much, they lay the ground work for future generations.

I love how Garrus is the only one Shepard tells about him sabotaging the Genophage and being forced to kill Wrex in self-defence. That was one of those rare moments in gaming where I actually had to sit and contemplate what I should do going forward. I actually weighed my options. People have said that the krogan are being self destructive and not trying hard enough to have kids- after all, the genophage just brought the birth rate down to 2.1, or pre-industrial levels. What these people forget is that the genophage doesn't affect the number of eggs they produce it affects the nervous system of all developing feti. Imagine trying to have a child, but not only having miscarriages, but each one of them being born into the world lacking the upper part of their brain, or with severe neurocognitive retardation. For reference, it would be like having 999 births with microcephaly, except much more horrific.

I know I am late, but I will answer anyway. I don´t think that Garrus "likes" Wrex tbh. He certainly respects Wrex, both for his honor and his courage, but you can constantly hear him worrying about the krogan expansion throughout the game. He clearly sees the krogan as a threat, including Wrex, so I don´t think he was that upset about how it ended, aside from the fact that most of the krogan war assets got called off because of it.
@hamsterdoom3605 жыл бұрын
@@jirkazalabak1514 Building off what you said, I think a lot of people sometimes forget the relations the other races had _long_ before humanity was even on the scene. The genophage, for example, was deployed in 710 CE, and humanity didn't join the galactic community until 2157 CE. So there was 1,447 _years_ of embitterment on both sides. And the Krogan, who can live for over a thousand years, can seriously hold a grudge. Garrus is smart, cool, and calculated. Even when his team on Omega was utterly destroyed, he didn't let his emotions - his anger and sorrow - get in the way. Whether this is indicative of how all Turians operate is difficult to say, but given the circumstances surrounding Wrex's death (what with the entire galaxy at stake), I think it's easy enough to understand Garrus' cooled reaction.
@jirkazalabak15145 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterdoom360 Agreed, Garrus is not one to let feelings cloud his judgement. As far as other turians are concerned, I would guess that their long and mandatory military service makes them much more stoic and disciplined than other species, but of course, most are not as calm and calculated as Garrus is. I mean, when you look at his personality, Garrus is much more of a renegade than most people seem to realize. Whenever he is asked about a problem, he approaches it like a renegade would, at least most of the time. He even mentions that if there was any chance to not cure the krogan, he would´ve taken it.

I did a pure Paragon playthrough and then a pure Renegade playthrough. Honestly hard to feel sympathy for the Krogan -- if you save them without Wrex in your campaign, sure you've secured Krogan forces for Earth, but Wreav takes the reigns and spends the rest of the game sermonizing about marshalling new Krogan from all over in a revenge animus after the Reapers are dealt with. Shephard made a fair point when Wrex confronts him in the Citadel that not all Krogan are like Wrex and they just aren't ready for a cure. They really are conquest worshipping, savage people... Securing Krogan loyalty was synchronously guaranteeing yet another future war with their now revitalized populace, Wreav basically makes a promise of it. All of the Krogan's woes are biproducts of their own incessant war-mongering. Despite their grudge against the galaxy, they honestly do it to themselves. Act like a dog, don't be surprised when people put you on a leash. Only thing about the genophage sab choice that bummed me out second time around was capping Mordin.

I love the trilogy, but it is full of constant Paragon pandering. Even if you cure the genophage with Wrex and Eve dead and Wreav in charge, something almost universally considered to be the most dumb and dangerous move ever, there’s still practically no consequences for it. During the epilogue slides you get a screenshot of a cheering krogan horde... and that’s it. The rest of the slides are the same happy “everything works out” slides that high war assets give. Not very impactful. There’s nothing stopping you from just head-canoning that it all worked out anyway. “They’re just cheering because the Reapers were defeated!” XD Your “consequences” begin and end with that screenshot. BioWare seemed so hesitant to ever even slap Paragons on the wrist for anything. Limiting the very few times they do to things like e-mails and vague news stories. While constantly punishing anyone who chooses to exercise pragmatism over idealism (though they would occasionally throw them a few crumbs by adding a whopping +2 points or something to the CDF War Asset). Pure Paragons constantly gamble with trillions of lives, never lose, and get continuously praised and rewarded for it. The worst thing that ever happens due to constantly choosing Paragon is that you get an e-mail that Kelly was killed. Hardly comparable to 1) the galaxy now hates and fears humanity (for concentrating on stopping Sovereign), 2) you get confirmation that the rachni in the past were being controlled, so you genocided an entire species (the queen) for nothing, 3) by killing Balak to ensure he can never orchestrate another Terra Nova, you both sacrifice the hostages and lose out on the batarian fleet in ME3, 4) by sabotaging the cure even with Wrex alive (because you thought his odds of success, even with Eve, in changing the krogan were still just too small to take a chance on) you not only end up losing a mountain of War Assets, but also having to kill two close friends. Although killing Wrex did feel more inevitable if you always saw the genophage as a tragic but necessary evil until the krogan really showed that they were ready for a cure, and likely wouldn’t just immediately go to war, and 5) a lot of others examples.

Eve dies. You can sabotage, keep krogan support, get max salarian support, and get mordin

Garrus knew a long time ago that the war with the reapers would be brutal and that there was gonna be a lot of hard choices he accepted every call Shepard was going to make because he knows what it’s like to give orders that will get his men killed. Shepard gave an order that got Wrex and Mordin killed he can’t judge Shepard on it because he might’ve made the same call and it doesn’t matter to him that Shepard pulled the trigger on both of them because he would have done the same thing. Remember if Shepard doesn’t shoot Ashley Garrus will.

Except Garrus never stared down a barrel by one of his own men because he chose to remove a threatening criminal over something they have a personal stake in that can never be recovered

The Ruthless calculus of war. Say whatever you want about ME3 but it captures the hopeless march of the Reapers perfectly by reminding you of the things you had to do, the decisions you had to make. Who do you support? Who do you let die? The first play through still sticks to me.

I did this on my first playthrough and it's still the right move to me (with Eve dead)... 1. The Krogan live 1000 years and can reproduce 1000 times per year...it's way too high a long-term risk to just assume that Wrex alone can change everyone. 2. If Wrex dies to the Reapers or gets assassinated you screw over the whole galaxy with another Krogan war later on (based on their violent history or how fast they'll exhaust the resources of every planet they settle on) 3. You have no clue during the sabotage mission if you can get Salarian help later on, or that Wrex will even find out. 4. Mordin himself throughout ME2 was raving about how absolutely perfect a balance the genophage birth:death ratio created for the Krogan as well as all other races. Assuming the person who knows the most about the genophage is right about the genophage, then you're not actually committing genocide by not curing the genophage but just limiting Krogan long-term power.
@jirkazalabak15145 жыл бұрын
+SkeezeyJ To be honest, the "sabotage" plan makes no sense to me. I mean, how could the krogan not find out? How can anyone not notice the difference between 1 and 1000? The effects of the genophage are perfectly verifiable. Wouldn´t it be suspicious that the majority of their children would still die, even after the cure? Even if they found no evidence, they are paranoid enough towards the other races that they would probably check out of the war anyway. Just a plothole I guess. The moment when you shoot Mordin is really emotional though. Good work on that. I had never been so sad in a game before.
@floricel_1124 жыл бұрын
@@jirkazalabak1514 the idea of the sabotage was to trick the krogans, make them think the cure was dispatched, but it didn't work, not that it was sabotaged on purpose. Also, it was never in the plan for them to never find out, but after the war
@jirkazalabak15144 жыл бұрын
@@floricel_112 Yeah, but the time frame doesn´t make sense. Wrex said it bluntly. "Unless every krogan gets the cure, there is no alliance." Wrex isn´t stupid, and even if he was, the krogan as a society don´t trust the other races at all. If they thought that there was even the smallest chance of them getting tricked, they would immediately back out of the deal. And even if they weren´t paranoid, the war could have possibly taken years. The symptoms of the failed cure would be detected within hours, and the whole galaxy would know within days. They would have to be extremely naive not to figure it out.
@floricel_1124 жыл бұрын
@@jirkazalabak1514 for the plan to work, several steps need to be taken. For starters, Wrex HAS to die during ME1 (otherwise, I'll never even consider doing it in the first place, him and Bakara WILL change the krogan for the better), because Wrex is smart and can figure it out faster than anticipated. Second, the Crucible: the whole war banks on it destroying the Reapers, and also gives a reasonable short time frame of a few months during which the war can be won and the krogan are none the wiser, since the great majority of the males are offworld fighting, and females are rare offworld due to how valuable a resource they are (so yeah, not a whole lot of love to be spread around). And after the war, I believe it's fairly possible to trick what's left of the krogan that the cure failed, especially since their oh so illustrious leader Wreav is the one who singlehandedly cured the genophage with no outside, especially no salarian, help. Even if convincing them fails, what are gonna do about it? They've already been crippled by the Reapers and are still the ones with the genophage.

The first time you lie to Garrus, the confrontation with Wrex and this scene here are imo good enough reasons to sabotage the cure. Playing a remorseful Paragon Shepard after doing it still makes them a monster, but the quality of writing and drama it brings I feel can't be passed up.

When i played i went the whole route to ensure humanity continues to expand. I tricked wreav, killed the quarians and in the end i selected the destruction ending. So all in all, geth, quarians and krogan are out of the equation. Turians and asari are in shambles. Two major powers are humans and salarians, since human space was relatively intact. So yeah and i did all of it being almost full paragon. So no blaming

lol of course, I just trust my friend Wrex to keep Krogan in line. If you wanna roleplay betraying your friends and shooting them in the back it's your choice. And as Primarch Victus said 'Urdnot Wrex was true to his word'. I had my worries about genophage but in the end I chose to help Mordin/Wrex, hell I also wanted to help Tali and Legion. Being son of a bitch is not the way I'd roleplay in any game.
