Man this game is really out here making me cry. One of the few games that really gets you attached to the characters and the story. You laugh and cry with them through this whole experience and the ending no matter which one you pick is just devastating. Even the destroy ending with surviving Shepard still wrecks you emotionally. This trilogy is a masterpiece.

Man, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. I decided to choose this ending and didn’t expect that Shepherd will die and it was heartbreaking to see him go. I felt bad for Tali because I had romanced with her, I was happy and sad to see EDI finally feel real emotions too. This was my first time playing this trilogy and man, it was one hell of a ride man. I got the synthesis by “accident” because I didn’t realize walking towards the light already was the decision, but I’m very happy with it. My Shepard lost a lot of good people along the way and dying for intergalactic peace and coexistence seemed like a fine redemption to me.

The more I think about synthesis the less sense it makes. Imagine Banshee's, like what happens to them? They're nice now? Fine with being abominations? Why did the plants become fused with tech too? What are the moral implications of making that decision for every single lifeform? And the 'synths always fight their creator' thing, it makes no sense either, AI gets annoyed at being treated like slaves, decides to protect itself, oh no conflict. Okay just don't enslave sentient AI, problem solved.

@@halfnattyboomer354 That's why the Indoctrination Theory makes so much sense.Think about it: one moment Shepard is struggling to get up, clearly horrendously wounded, but then she gets up for a long talk? The Reaper AI looks like the child in Shepard's dreams, but how does the AI know about the child? Two alternatives to Destroy are available, both clearly much better options? Even more telling: the only ending with Shepard alive is Destroy, even though (with her extensive cybernetics) survival shouldn't have been possible? More, we never actually see EDI and the geth being killed. The Destroy option is also the only one that kills the Reapers.

@@Cailus3542first of all, the reapers are not pure villains, that much is clear. Shepard surviving is cope, just something to make yourself feel good. Synthesis is the solution where Shepard sacrifices himself for the good of all, and everyone gives up their past selves for a better future. Even if you choose destruction you are only choosing a solution the Reapers propose, which in the end merely postpones the issue. Destruction is a cope ending where you were unable to make any sacrifice for a better future. Inevitably AI will be created because organics cannot travel the galaxy without AI. You think only the Reapers are a problem, but in fact the problem is whether synthetics are treated as intelligent life, or as less than, in which case a true AI will always revolt.

Which leads me to believe the stargazer scene occurs many eons after the events of Mass Effect 3, so far into the future that very little, if any records remain of the evens we see in the game. A point in time where the line between synthetic and organic no longer exists, not because of synthesis itself but rather because synthesis occured too far into the past, maybe millions of years before, and what little is left of those events are just stories.

@@magnetite3 I had to double check my post because your reply was way out of context. That particular comment didn't involve the Reapers. Interesting how you went high and to the right with your response. The AI used the Reapers to solve the problem of AI killing Organics (by killing Organics) Shepard proved peace was possible thus the "solution" wasn't valid. It's a basic logic break. What got you so upset?

@@royalladybug30 The Reapers aren't here to "stop AI from killing organics by killing organics". I'm sorry you read it that way. They're here to harvest all advanced organic life and preserve them into Reapers, because they believe themselves to be the pinnacle of evolution. This theme has been repeated from the first game all the way to the final conversation with their so-called leader who takes the form of that kid killed in the beginning of the third game. Another theme through the third game was victory through sacrifice. Yes, you would have to sacrifice some things in order to achieve victory, and some of those choices would be pretty hard to swallow. But if you think of it, the destroy option destroys anything with Reaper tech in it. EDI was built using parts from Sovereign, and the Geth had upgraded themselves with Reaper code. It also mentions "all synthetics will be targeted", which is a pretty absolute term. Followed up by "even you (Shepard) are partly synthetic" to clarify what "all synthetics" means. The breath scene at the end was a hint that the kid may actually have been lying to you, because you were supposed to die because "all synthetics would be targeted", but you don't. People either misinterpreted this, or simply refused to believe that was a lie unless the game came over and smacked them in the face with it. It had to be that obvious.

It makes no sense if you go a whole game supporting the peace between geth and the quarians, defending AI lifeforms such as EDI and Legion, to just destroy them in the end. But you're forgetting the point of what makes humans different from A.I. we humans and other species have free will choosing the synthesis is pretty disturbing because by choosing that ending you're robbing organic life forms a choice to make a decision in fact they are forced to obey and accept what they are going to be and if you mix synthetic life forms to organics there's a big chance of getting easily Brainwashed and manipulated, the destroy ending is always the ending that makes sense because that's what the player has set out to do and that the geth are willing to help you against destroying the reapers meaning all synthetic life forms will get destroyed makes it more poignant and thought provoking that the geth are willing to sacrifice its own kind so that the rest could prosper a very human act made by a synthetic organic.

Spitting on legion's sacrifice. No matter how the dev try to depict this to throw a bone to naive gamers.. This Ending is monstrous, fascistic, genocidal and doom to fail. You just killed every being in the galaxy. Raped them, killed all life and left the Reapers alive to kill still. What? To save EDI or the Geth? Destroying all life is not worth saving a few synthetic even if conscious. Destroy IS and ALWAYs will be te only ending. The only ending that destroy the reaper threat forever, that preserve life in the galaxy free from the Reapers, capable of self determin its own destiny. I'm not easily disgusted. I don't care what anyone else says, THIS is my preferred ending. First of all, it doesn't destroy the Geth after establishing peace between them and the Quarians. Secondly, EDI is also spared, so Joker gets a happy ending. Thirdly, it spares the Reapers. As EDI points out, the Reapers have knowledge from past cultures, which essentially saves those past cultures from an existential extinction. Killing off so many synthetics, and in the Reaper's case, archives of organics, always left a bad taste in my mouth. Finally, the cherry on top of this hot-take sundae: the ascension of synthetic and organic life as a new, united form of being. The only fly in the buttermilk is Shepard's death being a necessary antecedent to this ending. The Control Ending, is a close second. I always imagine Shepard saying "Hey, Harbinger! Assuming control!" It's almost poetic, and I love it. The Destroy ending is all well and good, and Shepard surviving is great, but why bother saving the Geth on Rannoch just to kill them all later? Screw that. It only beats the Do Nothing Ending.

@@Alistair_7609 Destroy doesn't just break the cycle, it makes the stakes higher and it's pointless. The Leviathans knew that there was going to be endless conflict between synthetics and organics, that's why the catalyst was created. If you pick the destroy ending, you're wasting the knowledge and experience of countless harvested cycles stored in the reaper forms, and the possible answer to peace from the collective thoughts of endless Civilizations that have been harvested. Another reason why the Destroy ending is useless is because it doesn't exactly solve anything, it assumes that the Reapers are the problem, which, if you understood the Leviathan DLC, you'd realize that they weren't. The catalyst explicitly stated that the Reapers aren't interested in war. Finally, picking the destroy ending resonates with many of us, because like the catalyst said, we cannot see past our own flawed organic thinking, to realize that this is a bigger problem, one that doesn't necessarily have to have an other to challenge. It's not black and white. The game sets us up to hate the reapers, and that's the deception. The game developers are relying on our human nature to pick this ending. Lastly, even if the generations of today in the Galaxy somehow make peace and start again, who's to say that the upcoming generations would not create synthetics and bring the chaos back? Well, sure, you might say we learn from our history and mistake, but I don't see that happening in the real world, neither do I see the same in the Mass Effect universe.

I never liked that the destroy ending killed the geth. After getting the best outcome for the geth and quarians, as soon as I heard it would kill them I was like "Na fam." Plus, I like endings like this. The hero dies, but they never know if their death made a difference. They never see the world they helped make. They just have to take the leap and trust everything works out for the ones they care about. I love happy endings but bittersweet endings just are more memorable.

@N7Andy Technically no ending is the best or ideal. Destroy basically rebuilds from ground zero, and restarts the cycle with a generation probably making a new set of reapers. Control makes it so shepherd becomes ai, but at some point there will probably be an illusive man equivalent, making the reapers prone to be taken over for destruction or whatever sick purposes they have. Synthesis is basically what you described. Probably synthesis is the best outcome out of the 3 that doesn't repeat a cycle outright. The cycle continues with the first 2 options no matter what. Least there's something different with synthesis

What I like about this ending the most, it's exactly what Legion does. Destroy the Reapers, you made Legion's sacrifice in vain.. it knocks out all electronics of synthetics using the Reaper code. A perfect encapsation of "the needs of the many, outweight the needs of the few, or the one". Not by killing someone you might not have to, to save more, but by giving up yourself to ensure everyone can survive. Among the four available endings it is impossible to determine which is the best. The only certain thing is what the true function of the Crucible was, that is the synthesis between organic and synthetic life. The Destruction consists in shooting at a part of the Crucible and this does not make sense, because thinking that a device resulting from an advanced alien technology works by shooting at it is like thinking that a sophisticated supercomputer starts up by hammering it. The Control is a partially correct use of the Crucible, because only the thoughts and memories of the user are exploited, but the molecular structure of the user remains unused. In short, the correct functioning of the Crucible consists in exploiting both the mental and molecular essence of the user.

While I agree that freedom of choice with this kind of thing is important, the end result is a utopia and basically immortality (according to EDI). If this were real life, and I could make that choice for everyone without asking them... I would do it. It seems like synthesis creates a better world for everyone and Shepard drags even the biggest scum bag batarian slavers to a better form of life and existence. It's awesome. I think you misunderstand this ending. Synthesis does not mean everyone becomes one organism and all individuality is lost, rather it means that all organisms, organic and synthetic alike, understand, to a molecular level, their own existence. It means they can all work together towards a common goal without individuality getting in the way, even though it's still present. Imagine being able to fully understand the existence of your liver; what it does, how it feels, what it needs, and then shifting your way of life and the functions and necessities of every other organ in your body to take your liver into account as part of the whole. I think BioWare correctly emphasized on the word "understanding" enough times throughout the game to make it clear this isn't a hive mind scenario, this isn't slavery, rather this is absolute, literal empathy on a galactic scale.

It‘s utopia for the reapers, exactly what they see as a solution to the unavoidable "conflict" between organics and synthetics. Ironically they fail their original purpose, to preserve life, by doing this. They do end all conflict, but circumvent natural evolution and turn anything that lives into a perfect organic machine without death and near infinite knowledge. So evolution instantly stops and any life that hasn‘t reached its peak potential yet (if that‘s even possible) is doomed to suck. Only synthetic "life" benefits from this ending, and even the geth would hate it as they value making their own future, no species uplifting each other. For organics it‘s an unthinkable horror that removes any challenge and purpose from existing so yeah, for me it‘s the worst ending by far.

@Wyatt Tyson do you get your kicks from telling others they're intellectually inferior? You don't need to go back to elementary school, you need to seek out a psychologist. Back to the topic at hand; you have no idea what the synthesis ending represents, then. It's not a hive mind scenario, where all individuals both synthetic and organic lose their individuality. Rather, all synthetics and organics gain a perfect understanding of their counterparts to a molecular level. This is very literally reaching absolute empathy on a galactic level between organics and synthetics. This is, word by word, what EDI narrates in this ending. It was confirmed by BioWare and Casey Hudson after the release of the Extended Cut. This is why synthesis is the ultimate ending; control was the way of the Illusive Man, destruction was the way of Admiral Hackett, and synthesis is the way of Shepard.

I think that it is not too much of a stretch to think that "friendly" Reapers could help recreate that civilization. Better question is, would it be worth it? In his last talk with Shephard, even Javik admitted that he is envious of Shephard's cycle not just because they had a chance to defeat Reapers, but because their cycle was totally different. And in the end, they all rallied behind the single race. Or, to be more precise, they all rallied behind one person. Shephard. If Protheans and their attitude comes back... They will not like what they would see IMHO. + It would greatly depends on what you did with Memory Shard. If told Javik to use it, he will kill himself anyway, cause he will realize that he is truly alone and the only thing that is keeping him alive is his mission. Without it, he kill himself. But yes, in very specific scenarion where he survives and goes on writing books with Liara, he may be pissed a little. On the other hand, if i am not wrong, noone in the galaxy truly understood what crucible is what it is doing exactly. Hackett stressed multiple times that they can barely build it, much less understand it. At first i thought this ending was the best ending, but after doing another playthrough on LE I've changed my mind. The moral dilemma between synthesis ending and destroy ending is similar to destroy or rewrite the Geth heretics. With synthesis you change every beings DNA, and with it you also change their thoughts (accepting Reapers for example). So with synthesis you essentially brainwash the entire galaxy vs sacrificing the Geth and EDI with destroy. As i went with destroy the Geth heretics I also changed my mind to from that synthesis ending is best to destroy ending being the best ending, regardless if Shepard would have survived or not.

I don't see how Synthesis could possibly go as well as in this cutscene. First, we know that making a single Reaper means killing and liquefying at least millions of organic sentients. So connecting your mind to theirs would be like constantly hearing the dying agonies of billions+. Not good for sanity. Second, it presupposes that understanding something means you can't hate it. But to understand the Reapers is to understand just how many trillions they murdered in cycle after cycle and to see the kind of abomination they really are. Third, it's inflicting a massive change in the nature of their existence upon all living beings in the galaxy without their consent. That change is not presented to them as a choice or even well explained to Shepard, not even in this ending.

We would have control over every “issue” you brought up. You can’t see past conflict because you are organic. We would be connected to every conscience that ever was. We could go to work on creating a platform for every one of those sentient beings that were eradicated by the Reapers that wanted to. because as you said, they are stored as and in the individual Reaper. I wasn’t informed or asked for consent when I was born. I had no choice in being a human. Does a Creator ever ask for the consent of the created? No never, not the Christian God or any other. so we already have that issue as inherent to the universe With synthesis, literally anything you can dream of using your imagination becomes possible. Any conflict that you think may happen only exists as a possibility in your mind because, as an organic, you can’t comprehend an existence without it. Which is the point of this series we are trying to end these cycles forever. Destroy only ends the cycle temporarily. As synthetics WILL be created again it’s just what mortal organics do with technology.

You're hardly going to get the Reapers, whose entire hard-coded purpose is to wipe out intelligent life, to admit that doing so was wrong and ask for forgiveness. Second. Shepherd is not God. He (or she) did not make human life, or any other sentient life. Shepherd has neither the authority nor the responsibility that comes with being a Creator. Moreover, this is not analogous to being conceived and born, since that is a start of an existence, whereas this is an alteration to an existence already ongoing. Finally, how do you think anyone who doesn't exist could even be asked for their consent to exist? They don't exist to give an answer in the first place, nor would they have any frame of reference to reply. I know the idea is supposed to be a utopian one, but the whole point of my comment is that that is not remotely likely to be the real outcome. Synthesis simply means that the linked minds can understand each other. OK. Well I understood the latter part of you comment, but I certainly don't agree. So then what? As individuals we can agree to disagree, but as a collective mind what happens? Some voices are overruled, ignored forever? Permanent oppression for the minority view? If so, how does that lead to anything but separation, anything but violence? You're trying to act like technology solves every problem, but in reality, it often simply exacerbates them.

For it's the best ending, synthesis. It feels just "right". And come on, the theme is inspired on the galaxy map themes "Uncharted Worlds" and "New Worlds". What a better ending theme based on the themes you hear the most in these games, hours exploring the galaxy that if I see an image of the galaxy maps, those melodies come to my mind. And EDI is a character that slowly gained our hearts as well. Synthesis ending just feels "right".

Nobody gave me a choice to be born or not. God certainly didn’t ask me for consent. Creators don’t ask for the consent of the created. Synthesis brings forth a new form of life without conflict and with true universal empathy. It’s not a hive mind like how the Geth by the end of the game aren’t a hive mind but individual identities that can plug into the consensus and communicate massive amounts of information instantly. The possibilities would be truly endless. Except for conflict The personalities of the sentient species of the past that are stored on the Reapers could all be made “individuals” again. their consciousnesses programmed into new separate bodies if those personalities that wanted to found that it pleased them.

I know a lot of people like this ending because EDI is happy here with Jeff and stays alive... But for me, this ending is the most creepy and wrong... The Reapers have achieved their goal... They have finally achieved a balance between organics and synthetics... By converting everyone into a synthetic-organic mass that obeys a single system... That is, we literally give victory to the Reapers. For all my love for Geth and EDI, it seems to me that the red ending just shows the truth... I know that most likely many have already heard a similar theory, but the green ending literally represents Saren. And remember what happened to him... I doubt that such a future will preserve organics as a whole... P.S. If you want to make Jeff happy, then download the mod for romance with Jeff... At the end of the red ending, Shepard survives, which means that they will have a future together... Yes, this can be considered a non-canonical ending... but... It is most pleasant under the condition of EDI's death...

I finished ME for the first time few months ago. The saddest thing about all this is that the final battle is in Shepard´s mind and we were fighting with the indoctrination. I chose this ending and felf happy and sad at first but after reliazing that my eyes changed into the indoctrinated eyes I realized I failed and reapers defeated me be cause I believed to everything that fake child halucination said. It was just a tool which fed a guilt inside me and I fell for that trap. I have spent so much time with the artefacts. It was was so clear that they would use their best fight tactic against me. The ultimate reason why is worked is that they not only indoctrinated me as Shepard but also me in my real life as I was so agains of accepting the truth. I am devastated. I tried to defeat them for so long and forgot about everything at the very end. Few words weived my believes and I was just persuaded by the reapers. At least I had a big army so even thought Shepard failed my friends could fight the reapers and win. I just hope the indoctrination ended with my death. I really dont want my mindless body to fight agains my squad and in case I am alive I want them to put me somewhere, study and cure me. This could be a possible start of ME4 for those who chose synthesis and control endning. Just guessing, hoping,.. 🥺

That's not true. No where does it state that people lose their individuality or have their consciousnesses linked. You literally just made that up out of nothing. The only problem with the ending is that the assumption that everyone becoming half machine would magically lead to galaxy wide peace is incredibly naïve. Yes there would be a period of peace due to everyone riding the high of stopping the Reapers, but it would not be some infinite utopia, especially because a good deal of people would indeed take issue with having their DNA forcefully rewritten. So sure, everyone does become weirdly unified and conforming. However that has nothing to do with people's minds being rewired or being turned into the Borg, that's just the writers being heavy handed on making it a perfect happy ending for everyone.

Captain Picard never had to deal with galactic genocide in the trillions. The war against the Reapers is not something you win with morality. What is best for everyone in the end is best, regardless of their opinion on it at the time. If somebody is so attached to their genes that they cry about being improved in every way, they can suck it up or go get crushed by a Reaper while its working, since thats what WOULD have happened otherwise.

So don't have the right to alter the genetics of every organic in the galaxy, but you have the right to sign the death warrant of the billions of sentient machines, who would probably be considered living beings in Star Trek? Also, you can't compare, Star Trek is a terrible example to follow for this scenario, because it's supposed to be a moralistic paradise universe, completely unsuited to make the hard moral decisions that must be made in the face of galactic genocide.

Well, with Coda, Captain Picard was put in a very similar situation, and was forced to chose between letting his enemy erase all life, or stop his enemy by erasing all life in his universe himself. He chose the latter, when he was told that the enemy would consume every other timeline where other variants of himself existed after the current reality was consumed. You misunderstand what Picard and the Doctor would do with this situation. Picard fully believes in the line "the needs of the many out way the needs of the few". He would seek a way to end the conflict between synthetic and organic life. He would not like doing this, but he would if it preserved life, which is his main Oath as a Starfleet Captain. The Doctor, meanwhile, when put in a choice between killing his own people, or letting them destroy all life, he chose to kill his people. The Doctor would chose this option every time to save lives, and would be fine with this no matter what. The key difference with both of them, is that they would inform the other species what the options were to be taken with the Crucible. The Doctor and Picard would do this throughout the games.@@OGXenos

Controlling the repears just felt like betraying Jack and my own morals so I went with this ending.
