When some nucleons combine to create a nucleus, the mass of the nucleus becomes less than the sum of the individual masses of the the nucleons. This difference in mass is known as the mass defect of that nucleus.
The Equivalent energy of the mass defect is the binding energy.
And the ratio of the binding energy to the number of nucleons in the nucleus is called the mass defect per nucleon.
