Pond street full of a mix bag of brown n cream buses , nice livery, unbelievable cheap fares ..the days!

@gitface007 that was the whistle buses. An inspector blew his whistle at 11:15pm and all the buses set off. The reason why they were all going very fast is, the faster they went the quicker they finished work.

The last bus was known as the "whistle bus",as an inspector would blow a whistle bang on 23;15 and the buses would leave as fast as possible, which meant the driver would get home quicker.

I remember this at the Rotherham bus station, all going up the big hill to destination Herringthorpe.

I remember it well when getting a late bus from the High Street for example back in the late 70s/early 80s. Wasn't the last one at 1.15am? Running like hell before the whistle went or you missed your bus. Great times and great memories to be able to have.

Happy days indeed. Cheap fares, buses to where people actually wanted em to go to , not like now, bus to where the bus companies want em to go.

@craigbeaumont414 The Atlanteans for SYPTE had Voith gearboxes. The only other Atlantean to have a Voith gearbox was Tyne & Wear PTE's 244, SCN244S.

@Dr0ctave rightly so it's a mess. On the routes where Stagecoach threaten their pot of gold the fares and frequencies are great but on the other routes they don't seem to care. I get the 82 and it's £1.30 a single and about £17.50 for a week ticket - assuming you just use it for work there and back where's the incentive to get a pass!

52 & 95 were always the most frequent routes for some reason, every 6 minutes.

It was a tradition back in the 'good days' pub closing time was 10:30 so people had time to drink up and go for the 'last bus'. It also meant the guys could walk the girl to her bus and have time to get to their bus before the whistle went!
