I’ve been using growsure compost (bought a load of them as a B&M bargain buy due to damaged bags). Much like your good self, I rubbed it through a 6mm mesh riddle and it made a good light seed compost. However, I found it held the water too well, which caused some rot issue in early / slow sowings. I think the problem is that the manufacturers try to compensate for not using peat by adding wetting agents, but they add too much wetting agent and the compost holds water to an unnatural degree - maybe good for hanging baskets?😕 Anyhow, I took to adding in between 10 & 20% perlite, to counteract the problem and I’ve had great success with it thereafter. It may indeed not be a problem going forwards because as the weather warms up, germination speeds up and seed rot becomes much less of an issue. Thanks again for all your good work 👍

Good thing they're in the greenhouse with the hailstones out there! Do you pre-soak the seeds in cold water? Or luke warm? Nice organized cell trays!

I love sowing seeds, one of the best gardening jobs. Where do you buy your module seed trays? I saw some today but they were a bit thin so I wasn't sure if they would last more than one season, yours look better.

Great update Ivan , I followedvyour guidance for sweet peppers and 8 out 8 germinated which I was over the moon about, would you still soak seeds for beetroot as they seem quite hard as well, appreciate your help and advice 👍

Hello Ivan How many bell pepper plants do you intend to grow on? and which percentage do you grow outdoors? Will you grow them all in containers?
@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Жыл бұрын
Hi Kate I will do around 30 Peppers most in containers a few in the ground in the greenhouse and less outside as our weather is not really warm enough outdoors Thank you
