I'm amazed that we're in the same Grow zone 8B, your in the UK and I'm in SW Georgia(US). Our frost date is April 1st though. The world is round!!! Mother Nature is....who she is! Your garden is lovely!
@LizZorab
@LizZorab 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The zones don't really work for an exact comparison as the UK is much further north (on a level with Canada), but it's warmed by the Gulf Stream. I use the zone equivalent as so many viewers asked what zone we are in, I think the zones refer to the temperature ranges as much as the frost dates. What I do know is that I am totally ready for it to be spring and for it to stop raining for a while! Thanks for watching 😃

For seeding outside in February I recommend Brassica napus var. pabularia (here in Germany called Bremer #Scheerkohl or Schnittkohl). It can be harvesred by cutting already after 6 weeks and is unknown nowadays because it cannot be stored for many days and transported. The varierty 'Licapo' will be sown here as soon as the snow has gone this month.

Last year I ended up with a lot of very small beetroot just before the first frost. I decided to pressure can them as a don’t like pickled beetroot as much. Rather than peel them I washed them well and pressure canned them in just water. When I use them they pop out of the skins, much easier than peeling them all.

Here, in central Europe, I am still fighting with snow and trying to clear it from the public pavement in front of my house every day :-) I am getting fitter by the minute! There has been another snowfall today, actually. To be honest, I am really happy to see a normal cold and snowy winter after so many years of temperature slightly above zero and almost no snow at all. Spring must be round the corner, perhaps a distant one, though ;-)

Tomatoes are the reason I have a “garden”! 😂 Mine is really more like tomatoes & a few other things vs a real garden since I’m doing containers in a 2’ x 20’ area which really doesn’t have enough sunlight. But I do my best because I love tomatoes, especially home grown. I could eat tomato sandwiches every day of summer. Or just chunk some up, add salt & eat that way. I think gardening zones need more specifics than they have. I’m in 8b also but my seasons are drastically different than yours. A person new to gardening would be totally confused if they lived here where I do in southern Georgia US but tried to plant the same as you. I know it’s all about last/first frost dates but it’s also about how long of a growing season, how extreme the temps get, etc. A new gardener might would give up after a first try that completely failed.
@LizZorab
@LizZorab 4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree Julie, the zones system is highly flawed. I refer to it because many of our viewers are from USA and have asked me so many times. 2' x 20' sounds like a good space for tomatoes, do you grow basil and other things below the tomatoes?
@julieb9215
@julieb9215 4 жыл бұрын
Liz Zorab - Byther Farm I have not grown any basil yet but a friend is supposed to give me some seeds. This last year I planted some marigolds in with my tomatoes. The marigolds still have some blooms right now-which is both good & bad. I’m planning to change out some of my containers (for larger containers) & need to reuse the dirt but feel guilty that I’ll have to kill the marigolds which are still attracting bees. I have a plan to fix that issue for this year. I’m prepping the soil across the fence in the neighbors yard & will throw some marigold & other flower seeds over there to grow, saving me some space. 😂 We’re both in rentals & I can tell he won’t care since he leaves trash in his yard. I’ll be improving his yard! 😂 I plan to plant some tomatoes (both full sized & cherry) along with cucumbers, pole beans, & whatever else I can squeeze in. I’ve only grown summer crops but next fall I want to try some winter veggies. I have tons of seeds compared to what I’ve actually planted in the past. 😂

Thanks Simon, I usually grow 2 or 3 raised beds, in rows of about 14 feet long and 5 or 6 rows to a bed, I suspect that might be an awful lot of pots to keep watered! I will however try it with a couple of pots just to see how they get on. 😃

Liz, I garden in the Chilterns on heavy clay over chalk with lots and I mean lots of flint and stones - not ideal carrot and parsnip growing conditions. I do grow carrots in the ground by making holes with a dibber and filing them with multi purpose compost but I also grow them in large (30 litre) tubs and I get excellent results this way.

Thanks for the great reminder! Hoping to get my seeds started over the weekend.🙌 I am in zone 8A.. I like you… am looking forward to my red acre cabbages again this year. Although wonderful in salads during the summer, my favorite was braised cabbage. Sounds like we make it similarly… It’s so delicious! One thing I tried last year was putting the finished product in my husband’s smoker for just a little while. It infused the cabbage with a tiny bit of smoky flavor which completely added to the sweet and savory nature of the dish. I highly recommend it! It was almost like eating a smoked kielbasa within the cabbage.... without actually having kielbasa. Although I do eat meat… This was a way to make my quick meals even better, without having to spring for sausage.👍 Well, thanks once again for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I wish you all the best with your seed sewing adventures this year!🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱😉

Thanks Trisha, the smoking of the cabbage sounds really interesting. I'm running courses in the polytunnel in mid-February so don't want to fill it up with seeds until after I have done those. Then it will be full steam ahead with the seeds that can be sown under cover. 😃

Hi Alan, the new growing season is edging its way closer, but it doesn't FEEL like it's here yet. The wind is bitterly cold, it's pouring with rain on our already saturated ground and the light is still, well, wintery. But spring is around the corner, a few short weeks and we'll be rushing to keep up with ourselves.

I live on the southern oregon coast and we have been having a rainy January. The charts always say last frost date is march 15. But we have had frost on memorial day in the past. So it's always confusing when to start plants and when to plant seeds outdoors.

I use cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and sometimes a tiny bit of clove (plus salt and pepper) to spice the red cabbage. Chopped apples and sultanas are good it in too.

Just found your website and absolutely love it, very informative and useful as I seem to be in the same frost zone over in Merseyside. Although I've gardened all my life, Im in my 70s we only got our 1st allotment last April and have had a great 1st year.

Hello Pauline, so pleased that you are enjoying the channel! How exciting to get an allotment and to have had a good first year. I'm sure it will have been lots of hard work. Are you growing mostly veg or a mixture of fruit, veg and flowers?

Growing mostly veg but there are some strawberry plants, rhubarb and gooseberries. Like you I have been on the slimming world journey and have lost a stone, so veg and salad are my thing.
