As U.S. lawmakers struggle to reach a consensus on legislation to curb gun violence in the wake of mass shootings, the U.S. also remains the largest international supplier of arms, funneling billions in military weaponry into wars in Ukraine and Yemen. Until there is a serious curtailment of U.S. militarism, it will continue to prioritize U.S. lives over lives abroad, says Norman Solomon, national director of RootsAction and executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy, whose new piece is headlined, "How About Some Gun Control at the Pentagon?" International arms control advocate Rebecca Peters describes U.S. efforts to block weapons control efforts at the United Nations and adds that New Zealand's swift action on gun control following the Christchurch mosque killings in 2019 should give the U.S. impetus to do the same.

A manmade "God" wants US Military to kill civilians is what I see. My son joined the Army in 1999, and, he was never the child I raised afterwards. He volunteered for Afghanistan, and, when he returned home, he died. 🥺 What on Mother Earth makes Humans want to kill one another? An oath to "God"?

The democrats have applied their irrational thinking for the past few days, and no longer indulge in commentary nor do they feign sadness, they directly and viciously attack and blame their political opponents. This is part of their campaign for the midterms in November. Now for the naked hypocrisy behind these hollow utterances: Every democrat who has issued statements imploring the need to ‘stand up to the gun lobby’ are under the protection of armed guards. Their homes and offices are surrounded by armed bodyguards. Whenever they make public appearances, they are surrounded by armed bodyguards. They take their own security very seriously and guns are a large part of it. Obama claims to be an ardent admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, so perhaps he ought to practice the Gandhian principle which says: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Instead of merely pontificating about gun control and the need to seize guns, Obama could begin asking all his bodyguards to give up their arms. Once this is accomplished, he could ask Biden, Pelosi, O’Rourke, and Hillary Clinton to follow him. Washington D.C. can also follow this example. If they want to repeal the Second Amendment, how about pilot-testing that change in Washington D.C. first? How about a total ban on arms in Washington D.C.? Will the powerful in Washington agree to that? We all know that "Gun Free Zone" signs don't seem to work, and let the whackos know where to go. For the democrats, it has always been one rule for the 'ruling class' and another for the public. The democrats frequently claim that the U.S. is a nation of immigrants -- hence, every illegal migrant must be welcomed and treated with compassion. But when it comes to settling these migrants, they chose working-class neighborhoods. You will never see a group of poor migrants settled next door to any of the luminaries in Washington who frequently feign compassion. In the event that one of these migrants turns out to be a violent criminal, who suffers? But of course: The working class. If the migrants agree to work for less than the minimum wage, once again the working class sees a depression in wages or perhaps are rendered unemployed, particularly if they can't speak Spanish. The democrats have additionally been demanding the defunding of the police and calling for the removal of police in schools. "Community, not cops!" "Dignity in schools!" they bray. These same democrats demanded that Washington D.C. be guarded by armed law enforcement following the January 6 protest. They also have law enforcement guarding their personal properties. The defunding of police that the democrats demand only applies to those who live in poor neighborhoods and must go to public schools. A firearm is perhaps the only way regular citizens can defend themselves against unruly elements and actual killers. The second hope is that the police patrolling in the vicinity will be of assistance. If the democrats have their way, citizens will be left with no means of protection while the crime wave makes their neighborhoods more unsafe every day. The only groups of people who can afford the luxury of firearms will be criminals and the security teams of democrat politicians and their affluent donors. The democrats are sending a message to everybody that only their lives matter.

The corporations are evil and they will disarm us so they can have a monopoly on power. The drug dealers didn't think of the future neighborhood repercussions when they made their money either. Drugs aren't going anywhere and neither are guns. This is the bed we made and we will have to sleep on it. Unless you think people being pushed out of bed and forced to make it different will work, but most likely they will be forced at gunpoint. Somethings can't be undone. Like freedom.

The "most important line" to remember comes from Marx himself and involves the importance of the proletariat not allowing themselves to be disarmed UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. But you wouldn't know that would you? Because you're not a real leftist... you're a tool of the peacenick-"liberals", i.e. authoritarians, and neither you nor anyone else seems to care about the fact that for decades "gun violence' actually decreased significantly... but the 1980s don't count, eh? Those were mainly just black people being killed, right, and those guys don't really count eh? You and the rest of the mainstream left are authoritarian racist assholes. In other countries there's mental illness, violent games and movies, normal buildings for schools (as opposed to military fortresses with armed teachers), and many countries lack mental healthcare worse than here. It would be silly to say the opposite of any of those things. Even the individualistic culture of the US - which may've been part of the drive in some of those cases - exists in other countries at various scales. The only difference here is the ubiquity and ease of purchasing of assault weapons.

We have had mass shootings for almost 60 years. Every shooter is insane. This is a mass psychotic problem. You could count the first as the sniper in the tower at the University of Texas in 1966. A decade went by, only for assassinations and serial killers to make the headlines. Then it was the mass shooting at the McDonalds in 1984. (I think there was one prior to that.) There was the term, "going postal," to underscore how postal workers shot up their workplace, also in the 80s. I was in Texas in 1991 when a man drove into a Luby's cafeteria to kill 21. A worker in the kitchen saved himself by hiding in the dish washer. Then Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas and now Uvalde. In between the years there have been scores of other spree killings. All suspects were deranged and depraved. Democracy Now needs to dedicate a program to the plague of psychotics in America. Why does our country have so many of them? Why are they not getting treatment? Can the parents read the signs? What's the underlying cause? Is it diet..is it their upbringing...what is it?

@@robertrichard6107 I didn't know that. I learned something new. The Texas tower shooting was before I was born and first made an impression on me from the TV movie starring Kurt Russel. Pretty good movie for television in the mid 70s. The first mass shooting I recall was the McDonald's killing. What had been scary up to that time were the serial killers. I was in NYC when the Son of Sam was on the loose. Looks like the mass shooters displaced the serial killers as the option for psychotics.

You're right Primo, and if you look at the history of big pharma and these psychiatric pills such as anti depressants, there's a correlation. I can remember when you would go to a doctor for antibiotics for a respiratory infection in the mid 1980's and before leaving the doctor would ask you if you wanted a prescription for Prozac. Big pharma was bribing the primary care doctors to put people on these ssri antidepressants, which we now know cause homicidal and suicidal behavior in some people. Right now 20% of the population is on this garbage and a study showed that over 95% of the mass shooters were either taking or withdrawing from a psychiatric medication. I used to know a guy who started taking an antidepressant and ended up committing suicide a few months later. Since these pills, suicide has now surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death by unnatural means. Depressed people used to take natural things such as tryptophan, but as soon as the SSRI antidepressants came out, big pharma had the government ban tryptophan, saying it had bacteria in it. Several years later the ban was lifted, but by that time alot of those people had switched to big pharma's poison pills.

I welcome all that was put forward and agree. I did pause when US culture was stated as similar to countries like Australia and New Zealand. It is often claimed that all western countries are similar in culture. After consideration I now believe that is broadly true except for the US. US is culturally an outlier and has institutions and systems that are different in important ways. New Zealand and Australia demonstrate this. They do not experience the same degree of disempowerment of elected government to enact legislation. Perhaps the influence of private interest money is the reason. The gun culture is radically different, people were not all that invested in whether they could have military weapons or unrestricted access to guns. A ban or restriction on access to football/Rugby would have drawn more passion. The opposition that spoke out was primarily imported from the US NRA! There is not the same sense of fear that permeates the US, people do not base decisions on the threat of home invasion or pending attacks on their loved ones to justify or rationalise extreme self defence measures. For Australians and New Zealanders the mere thought that a person could not access health care of an equivalent high standard because of their income is not even debatable. I think there is a different perception about equity and a fair go for all principle that is a fanciful ideal in the US. Also religion is not empowered or as prevalent, attempts to intrude by religion into government are quite strongly opposed. Religious institutions do continually try to intrude though. Finally both Australia and New Zealand do not have similar views about their nation being exceptional. Yes they can become patriotic about sports and other achievements but it is definitely kept in perspective. Cynicism in comedy can be quite an effective oversight tool against government overreach. Just my thoughts. The US might benefit from reflection upon their differences with comparable nations, there are many I think.

That may be part of it. I do think a lot of the shooters have a sense of a loss of power, because they have grown up in a culture where they otherwise feel entitled to power, wealth, control over women, subjugation of minorities, and they are seeing others 'invade' their space (but really are making the space more equitable) But America also has a long long history of gun violence. A genocidal westward expansion, killing indigenous and then attacking Mexico and enslaving and terrorizing Africans with violence. Never-ending wars where millions of Americans enter violent, authoritarian, and sexist (often sexually violent) military system. That violent culture has continued to today And the rise of the internet etc has all allowed this culture to thrive. Lots of factors that go into it for sure. But without access to guns, most of this violence would not happen. I do think even if we materially help people out (housing, food, shelter, etc) the violence would continue because it is cultural and not only economic

People are emoting over these shootings and while they are certainly tragic, they are hardly the biggest problem facing the common American citizen. The suicide epidemic is epoch and what about all the massive numbers of deaths caused by drug overdose? The people who die in mass shootings is minute in comparison to either of these sad realities facing millions of the American working class! The media doesn't even pay any mind to these societal fallacies, but presents coverage of gun violence to the public in such a way as to cause the uninformed to emote in order to push for gun control, which isn't even going to work, because of state's right's. Gun control only plays into the wishes of the rich plutocratic class to de-fang and de-claw the working poor. They want to force us into servitude without facing any risk of lethal harm from the people they are mistreating and leading in perpetual servility. They want to socially engineer society, so that it is resource of extraction, without the threat of righteous backlash.

well no, but actually no. not even "assault rifle is really a term" but it generally refers to a select-fire ( burst/full and semi selections), and now this is important, *intermediate cartridge* ammunition that is not a full power, full pressure gunpowder cartridge; .308/7.62x51mm NATO, .30-06, 7.62x54R, or the new .277 Savage/ 6.8x51mm Sig ammunition are full power vs. .223 Remington/5.56x45mm NATO, 5.7x28mm, 6.8 SPC, 7.62x39mm, 9x39mm, 5.45x39mm are examples of intermediate cartridges. the first (recorded to my knowledge) intermediate cartridge was the 7.5 Kurtz, used in the STG/MP 44, also know as its full moniker, _Shtürmgewehr_ which literally translates to "Storm Rifle". So not only is "assault weapon" or "assault rifle" wrong it is also a miss translation. Specifically from German, to Russian with the AK series/pattern rifles where the "AK" effectively means "Kalishnikov Automatic [rifle]" to English. As the first true "Intermediate/ Assault Rifles" were these two rifle patterns.

Hey lady, do you know what the equivalent to the AK-47 was in the medieval period? It was called the War Sythe. You know a Sythe used to cut down wheat? The thing the grim reaper holds in pictures? The long stick with the hook blade on it. Yeah, people turned the blade so it looked more like a spear. The common people used this because the dictators banned weapons unless you were part of their regime. So common people did it anyway and fought their tyrants with them. So the tyrants made War Sythes illegal too. The only problem was you couldn't take sythes away because people used the tool to harvest grain. So the tyrants made it illegal to turn the blade upright. Surprisingly the common folk did it anyway and marched to make their will actualized because that is the will of the people and a law not respected is a law impossible to enforce. So you can make illegal grandpa's old rifle because it has a sideways grip and a some accessories but all in all it's the same tool and his children and children's children will hear the tales of hardship and wisdom passed down through family stories and the lessons learned will carry across the ages. I know you think gun control is progress but it is a regression. The difference between us is not that one loves others more, it is that I trust people more. I trust there are more good people then bad and the probability is that a neighbors gun will protect me. I trust my neighbors, but I know there are snakes hidden in the glorious grass we walk on. But don't think you are making the world better by mowing all the grass down to bare dirt. Unless you are a sheep, then it's in your nature, and require a Shepard to protect you. When the sheapard is sick or sleeping the wolves come out and you sheep will be pleading for help like the Ukrainins and the many people's devastated by ruthless dictators across the ages.

Outlaw swords and outlaw songs and outlaw the harps to play them on. Disarming the commoners is not progress, but a giant regression to the days when the Kings every whim became law and they enforced these whims with deadly brutality with no regard for anyone but the Kings wishes. Those days are long over and we will not go back to them ever. The king is dead and will remain so.

With that logic, we should give everyone on earth a nuke because a good nuke will protect us from the bad nuke! No, giving people the power to kill others is not a good idea. It will only be used to kill others. If others didn't have guns, you wouldn't need a gun to "defend" yourself from them. Many of these shootings actively had police and security on the site - and they did nothing. It is extremely rare for a "good guy with a gun" to do anything "good." On the other side, tens of thousands of people die from guns every year. We need to not only disarm the population, but the governments as well, as they are the main perpetrators of violence. If you give people nukes, we all die. If you give people guns, they kill each other. I think we need to grow up and be honest that humans just can't be trusted in certain environments

Jacinda was only in the US so Biden could lecture us on our engagement re: China and the Pacific. Our experience with the Australian mass-murderer and our changing the gun laws as a result, was something relatively easy for us to do. We don't have a gun-culture like what exists in the US. Biden won't be able to change things, when it comes to the US gun problem. But, he will get to say he tried.

It kinda is when the average family size is 4-5 if you kill 4 or more people you've essentially killed a nuclear family amd some. I'd say that's a mass shooting.

What about the Jews who were disarmed right before the genocide. Racial redoric in the news and gun control at the same time is very concerning.

@@gaslampnation735 That’s a lie. They had guns too but what could they do faced with a militarised police force? Black people are armed but they get killed everyday, armed or not. All guns are used for assault therefore all guns are assault weapons. Grow up dude! All guns should be banned. It’s a silly law made by slavers and native murderers. That’s the real truth. Time for america to join the 21st century! If guns made places safer, America would be the safest country in the world!
