Nick Estes: Indian Boarding Schools Were Part of "Horrific Genocidal Process" by the U.S.

The Interior Department has documented the deaths of more than 500 Indigenous children at Indian boarding schools run or supported by the federal government in the United States which operated from 1819 to 1969. The actual death toll is believed to be far higher, and the report located 53 burial sites at former schools. The report was ordered by the first Indigenous cabinet member, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, whose grandparents were forced to attend boarding school at the age of 8. "It's kind of a misnomer to actually call these educational institutions or schools themselves when you didn't have very many people graduating, let alone surviving the dire conditions of those schools," says Nick Estes, historian and co-founder of The Red Nation. Estes says the institutions were part of a "genocidal process" of "dispossession and theft of Indigenous people's lands and resources."

@@flomccarther5632 I am not the one at fault- it is the generations before however I can influence those in power now, me giving up my personal home? Sounds like I must bear a punishment- what use would that be to the movement and future? I prefer to lobby and support the First Nations. Greed has ruled across the world for hundreds of years- at least now the information has come to light. Here in Australia we have Sorry Day for doing the same to Indigenous children. I would not disagree to ensuring all First Nations are given compensation and support from here on. It will never be enough to bring back those children.

Well, if that was not genocide and crimes against humanity, then what is? It is amazing that the Churches were also involved in this crime against humanity. Some people like to justify their actions against the indigenous people by saying they rescued them from an uncivilized existence. Well really, what they did to the Indians was uncivilized, criminal, barbaric, genocidal.

I have been doing my genealogy and I have a lot of relatives on the Dawes rolls but I also have “full blooded” relatives that are not on the rolls because the government rejected their applications due to them not being removed to the reservation. One of my grandfathers that only spoke Cherokee was denied enrollment because he was just seven when they were taking applications and he missed the deadline by being out of state. They also made applicants report quantitative Indian blood which the applicants didn’t understand and they had to make it up to make the government workers happy. I have “full blooded” relatives that say 1/16 on the rolls. This is another way that they wiped out native identities.

I am glad, too. Because it's quite obvious they were trying to wipe out the Indian nation. And even now, they seem so extinct, because I rarely see an Indian. But when I do it's always like I'm around a special person. Like you would seeing an eagle, that is extinct. And I've always felt we are long overdue, to having an Indian president. I always feel bad for what they did to the Indians. Taking their land, when they were the ones who took the best care of God's country. And placing them in impoverished land. Not to mention the many that were killed, in battles. But one thing for sure, Indians had some of the bravest warriors. That might have been the biggest fear they had, of the Indians, why they were trying to make them extinct. So sad. Time to turn all that around, and make things right, or better for the Indian nation.

These policies are insane, but this is the nature of the USA. It always has been. Unfortunately, no place strays far from it's roots. From the time Europeans touched ground they have been a hardship to the rest of the human family. In N. America, S. America, Asia, Africa and Australia, white people have affected everyone else in incredibly negative ways. Antarctica is the only major landmass where Europeans didn't negatively affect a group of people. Today in N. America The USA and Canada still occupy someone else's land. Today we are still speaking colonial languages and the indigenous people of this land are still minus a continent. Today there is an African diaspora in the western hemisphere because of more horrendous crimes committed against humanity by Europeans. Chattel slavery (a criminal institution that included several crimes; such as human trafficking, rape (breeding plantations), other forms of torture (look up breaking slaves), etc. The British, French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish and Portuguese all participated in significant ways. With all of this being said it's safe to say that we are all connected to this land, but that doesn't mean we all have the same relationship with the USA. Today I am a citizen, but I also know that they didn't bring my ancestors here for our wellbeing. We were never meant to reap the benefits of citizenship. This country never meant to contribute anything at any time in US history to my Indigenous ancestors either. The founders of this country were of a group of invasive people who were never invited and never had permission to set up shop. At this point history is history. None of it can be changed, it would be nice if this country's intended beneficiaries could acknowledge the truth of their countries, stop minimizing, justifying, defending and denying the the criminal nature of their founding and then stop doing harm.

@@sophiabrown9423 Absolutely, Sophia. Some Cherokee bought into the European lifestyle so much, they even had African slaves--not a fact that is often stated or admitted to. Slavery has always been a global phenomenon. I recently read that, centuries ago, the Turks enslaved fair-skinned women from the Caucasus to interbreed with their population in order to produce lighter skinned Turkish children and this is why the term 'Caucasian' is used to mean 'White' people. Now, in the 21st c, people spend good money on holidays in the sun and tanning salons until they are almost the same colour as the people that are regularly discriminated against in our society. The whole thing makes no sense. In an ideal world, skin colour would only indicate how your body protects itself from the sun's rays and should not indicate status at all.

She had 10 children with five living, she never did get any counseling or anything like that. She lost so much five children, before she passed on. She had a stroke at the age of 54 and was on dialysis for several years before she passed on. It was such a heartbreaking time to watch my mom struggle with no help from anyone. She wasn't raised to ask for help, she was a strong person to not complain about her life. She wanted to see Niagra Falls and wanted to visit Rio, she never got to do either. Mom was very abusive to my little sister and my oldest brother. She had a twisted way of believing and teaching what was taught to her, it must've been hell.

I first learned about boarding schools in the late 90s when I saw a Carrie Mae Weems exhibit. One of her triptychs consists of a photograph of young (Lakota?) men in their traditional clothing and with long hair, a photograph of the family that ran the Hampton Institute (another government-run boarding school), and a photograph of the same group of young men but with short hair and dressed in the typical attire of middle-class white people in the late 19th century. The "before" and "after photos of the men were enough to choke me up. But the text superimposed over the white family put it all together and drove me to tears: "With your missionary might / You extend the hand of grace / Reaching down and snatching me / Up and out of myself." I didn't need a label to explain the cultural genocide that occurred in these places. Here we are almost 25 years later with these horrors confirmed in a government report, and people still refuse to listen. It would be a miracle if corporate media took a break from their war porn to cover the atrocities in our own country. Let's hope leftist content creators cover this and refuse to let it fall out of the conversation.

There have been reparations to indigenous American communities for decades. It is all very minimal, however. No monetary amount is sufficient but there should be a more impactful and expanded dispersion of reparations to all indigenous people affected by the terrorism of Anglo expansion. I guess if it never happened to you, or if your ethnic group was perpetrators it would be easy to just forget that it ever happened and spin it around to make it look like it was just fake news. Its the same to the way Africans got stolen from their land to come work in plantations, treated like animals, ofcourse some slave owners would like for that to be forgotten and corrupt and greedy Kings that sold their people for a bottle of brandy 🤔. so much pain has been caused to some people over generations and nobody ever held accountable. The historic photo makes me cry. All of those little souls... How did my great Grandmother survive this? No accountability for the self righteous perpetrators. Education? In what? Horrific Genocide. God change us. God please heal us.

They should file a one billion dollar lawsuit; against the organization. They were serial killers.

What our government did to these gentle people, who lived in North America is sickening. They were lied to, murdered, and pushed around. I grew up near an Indian reservation, and I did not understand why they were so violent and drunk all the time. The government went in and built them brick houses, and when we drove through their little village, all the doors and windows were missing. The people around me said that they sold them for money. Killing each other was pretty common in those days. As a child, I felt such sadness for them. I did not understand, but now I do understand. Everything they ever known had been taken away from them. They were a lost people with no hope. Everything is different now. When I go back to visit relatives, and drive through that little Indian village, it is clean with new schools, a civic center, and a small museum that tells their story. They also keep a small herd of Buffalo and have a public Pow Wow every year. They have gotten their pride back, and they know who they are, as a people. Strong, resilient and they have a voice!!! So very grateful that they are still here today!!!
