I live in an older mobile home. 2X4 studs, aluminum siding on the outside, wood paneling on the inside, 3 1/2" of insulation in between. I literally made a through-penetration for a CATV drop by putting a large Phillips screwdriver against the outside of the house and smacking it with the heel of my hand. As the MH Park that I live in is full of similar homes, missing an intruder with a 9mm could literally make a few of your neighbors very unhappy with you. Something to bear in mind. If it is poor cover, it is also a perfect environment for an over -penetration issue if you return fire.

There are some great vids showing bullet effectiveness in water (and fluids). Turns out that Water becomes far more effective as a bullet stop the faster the projectile is moving. High power rifle rounds get shredded immediately when going into water but slower handgun rounds travel further. Mythbusters showed that only 14 inches of water is needed to bring a 50 cal to a dead stop. My guess is this is why the 556 was more affected by the water and the fluid in the cans.
@wobblysauce3 жыл бұрын
Was thinking of the same Ep.
@arnox45543 жыл бұрын
Makes sense too. As the 9mm bullet has more mass than the 5.56, it has more momentum behind it that those fluids need to stop.

If you jump from a 10 foot diving board, feet fist, your body is moving slow, and you can safely touch the bottom of a 10 foot swimming pool. If you are in a helicopter 3,000 feet above a lake, and you jump, your body is moving FAST, and your bones will break, and you will die.

The Mythbusters tested how bulletproof water is. Basically, the higher the velocity of the bullet, the faster the water stopped it. That explains why the 9mm went through the canned food and the water jugs but the 5.56mm didn't. With modern firearms, 5' of water was enough. That means swimming 3' down will do the job (because of the oblique angle) unless the shooter is directly above you.

I realized that it was indeed possible that I might find myself in that situation. I hate the "Run, Hide, Fight" video mainly for the "hide" part. Who gets out of a mass shooting by hiding? Seems to me the folks who hide just die slightly later than those who don't. Run if you can, absolutely. But fighting shouldn't be the last resort, if you can organize with others to mount some sort of fight, and you can't run, fighting is a whole lot more likely to let at least somebody go home than just cowering under a desk and waiting to be killed. I understand why business don't tell you that though - they don't want to be liable for you being a hero and getting yourself killed. Still, infuriating all around.

So the moral of the story for Walmart shopping is this...... 1. Keep one eye on the cereal, the other on the front door , with your ears tuned in for gunshots and screaming 2. IF you hear screaming &/or gunshots, make sure you can slip off your shoes fast. This will help you run much faster and quieter. 3. The most important..... Know where the automotive section is. Bullets have a harder time going through car batteries than cereal. If you can’t make it, duck into the camping isle. They have nice soft body bags.

Perhaps due to my training in the past, and CWP, I feel a moral obligation to my fellow man (women and children included) to intervene if feasible and not suicidal. I have every intention of surviving and believe in the old saw about fools rush in where angels fear to tread. However, if I have a reasonabe possibly of success, I'll go for it. If I have opportunity to ambush the shooter, it will happen. At least, I'll give him a bit of distraction, so others might live. My conscience will not allow me to do otherwise. It would trouble me greatly to to know I ran or hid knowing full well I might have saved someone's life by acting. Keep up your good work. PS. One of the biggest misconceptions is that concealment is useless if it's not cover. Untrained bad guys tend to not shoot at something they can't see. Fight or flight monkey brain kicks in for them. No stats to back this up but it's clear in every single robbery and shooting video where someone is behind almost anything...except drivebys..
@solitudessilentgroove2 жыл бұрын
If you decided to engage the shooter with your carry pistol, police or another good guy with a gun might mistake you for the OG and shoot you instead. I've been thinking about this. If a bunch of guys pulled their guns and went for the murderer how could we tell who is good or bad? Has anyone made a video on this?

@@solitudessilentgroove I know Rick over at think like a cop has. Hilarity ensues that he fears the cops more than assailants...coming from a 30 year veteran cop. I think the summary is basically if you're gonna act do it before cops get there, and don't give your description to dispatch at all...only the suspects. They'll always ask what you're wearing but just keep reiterating the suspect is so and so wearing such and such and get off the line. Dispatch always wants to keep callers on the line but it's usually not in your best interest. For the clothing discription reason being a cop flying lights and sirens with loads of radio traffic can easily mix up the two if the typically incompetent dispatchers haven't already.

Seeing the different results on the cans vs the TP for the 9mm and 5.56 was fascinating. I wouldn't have predicted that result
@TheBanjoShowOfficial3 жыл бұрын
My guess is the bullet ricocheted a lot more perhaps due to the velocity of it? Just basically rattled through everything instead of penetrating it. People think higher calibers automatically means deadlier but if you got shot with a .45 vs a 5.56, chances are the 45 would kill you much sooner and much easier than a 5.56 whose exit cavitation is literally nearly a perfect hole. All of this obviously likewise depends upon what IS being penetrated, meat or bone, both? Etc. hell even quantity of body fat.

Fantastic video! What I took away from a lot of Paul's comments are that there are a vast number of people that don't have a clue about ballistics and/or physics! Some of his stories of what people have told him are down right frightening!
@marks16383 жыл бұрын
I enjoy your videos and now you've got me looking for cover in Walmart. Next I'll be doing the same at Home Depot (there's plenty of cover and weapons in there.). Let me relate my own experiences many years ago. I think Walmart would have freaked if we had done this training in their store. We were training different police organizations (Federal and Local), we used an abandoned house for a shoot house in a run down part of town. In the house we used paint cartridges for our guns (revolvers were the best at the time for reliable operation in that training). We had lengthy discussions on gunfights in houses, along with appliances, furniture, and other household items. Plasterboard and drywall is not a bullet stopper. Concrete blocks and brick, kind of work depending on construction, and wood studs just slow the velocity a little. We took some of the moveable stuff out to the range and fired on it to verify it was resistant to bullets or not, using Full Metal Jacket (FMJ), Hollow Point (HP), and Soft Point (SP) ammo in pistol (38/357, 9mm, 45ACP), shotgun (12 gauge buckshot and slug), and rifle (223 and 308), the most common loads we had). It kind of biased me after that training as I'd watch TV shows and be yelling at the show that bullets will go through couches and doors, kitchen tables are crap, and mattresses (We knew a lot of this stuff was useless, but we had to demonstrate it to our students.) aren't to hide behind. A good old fashioned hardwood cabinet full of junk, an old Fridgedare refrigerator (not the door, the whole fridge), or a loaded tool chest will do in a pinch. The point being made was wear body armor and don't depend on luck to protect you in a gunfight.
@Muskoheim3 жыл бұрын
The canned stuff was a surprise to me. I'd have thought the combinations of liquids/solids/air might have made the best deform/deflect/tumble medium.
@BoberFett3 жыл бұрын
Me as well. I'm thinking the higher weight of the 9mm helped it get through all of that liquid in the cans where it stopped the 5.56. Perhaps 5.56 will go through harder materials due to velocity, but 9mm will go through more soft material due to mass?
@phillhuddleston94453 жыл бұрын
@@BoberFett Plus the faster lighter bullet dumps it's energy sooner and spreads it outward faster due to the higher velocity.
@stephenn10563 жыл бұрын
If anyone cares for the physics, it stems from drag. The force of drag scales by the square of the velocity. The faster 5.56 will thus have a higher resistance being met upon impact. Because of the lighter mass of the 5.56, it decelerates faster than the heavier 9mm. Note this takes effect when passing through fluids, which is why the 5.56 performs better against solid targets
@slick31293 жыл бұрын
I thought so too, after a bullet hits the third consecutive can I thought it would be losing both shape and energy. But then I remembered that my old air rifle will shoot through both sides of an empty can.
