79 years ago, between January 25 and 27, 1945, one of the biggest crimes committed by the Red Army in 1945 took place in Miechowice near Bytom. Within three days, 388 Poles and Germans were murdered. It was the bloodiest episode of the Upper Silesian Tragedy.
The crime in Miechowice was one of many committed in Silesia in the winter of 1945. During the IPN investigation, the number of people murdered in Gliwice, Gierałtowice and Miechowice was estimated at nearly 1,100 people. The victims of murder, looting and rape were not only Poles and Germans, but also forced laborers from Ukraine and France. Everyone, regardless of origin, was considered German
