Thanks for your review, super honest right away and very knowledgeable without the extra ethereal descriptions of the sound. Nice that you recommend this amp without pretension of cost difference or audiophile level. Damn that's a fantastic review if i ever see one. Very helpful and informative. It has that professionalism feeling all over it, great job! With consistent content i can easily see this channel going big. I wish Massdrop stuff was easier to get here in EU, i'll stick with Topping for the best bang for my buck. But this unit looks like an easy buy indeed.

@@PassionforSound Hey, their DACs are great (D10, D30, D50) for the price. The new all-in-one DX3 pro has been well received and measured well, it had a "clicking" issues at first but i believe they fixed it with a firmware update. If somehow you could get your hands on this unit for a review i'm sure many people would be interested.

I had to pull my Codex out of service and began to research for another rig. I found your channel and subbed. You are a gifted reviewer. Cut to the chase, I bought the amp and RME ADI - 2 DAC. They match up very nicely and provide a lot of flexibility and a very pleasing sound. The 789 is such an amazing and well-thought out amp for the price that i just love owning it. The sound is good, because the amp is super quiet and just gets out of the way and lets the RME rock. And the RME is another story. Nice review.

Does the amp support multiple outputs simultaneously? If you connect 2 headphones using the SE terminations, do both play sound? What about balanced + SE? Thanks in advance.

Interesting review which I found because MassDrop have put this amp out again. I have recently been playing with Bluetooth headphones (new Yamaha YH-L700A and older B&W P700 wireless). Really nice when Bluetooth’d to various sources but I set them up by wire to my OPPO 205. As a reference I pulled out my old (1995) Sennheiser HD580 phones. The HD580s pretty much cleaned them up despite the 3D tricks of the Yamaha unit. I used to use the 580s with a Burson HA160D (which was also preamping to Cary 300SE tube amps) when the Cary’s went so did the Burson so the Sennheisers went into the bottom drawer for years. Now my interest in headphone listening has been relit. I have watched/read reviews recently about the RME ADI2 DAC which is praised for its headphone stage. It can also do some room-tuning for my speaker system. As I am also considering to upgrade my Chord 2Qute to the Qutest, I now (at a stretch) could go to the Hugo TT2 and utilise it’s headphone stage. Am now in a multi-variate decision dilemma. Any comment you could make about the headphone performance of these three amps without reference to price?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, the TT2 is clearly the superior product in every aspect. The DAC is vastly superior to the ADI-2 and better than the Qutest too. The ADI-2 sounds a bit artificial and edgy compared to the much more natural/realistic and 3-dimensional sound from the Qutest or TT2. The ADI-2's amp stage is also only ok. It's about on par with the THX 789, but can't match the TT2 or even other affordable amps like the Singxer SA-1. In short, if you can stretch to the TT2, do it! If not, I'd recommend the 2Qute or Qutest (I haven't heard the 2Qute) and a nice amp - it will be a much better overall experience I believe.

Listening to the THX AAA 789 for the first time this morning. While connecting it to my audio gear I was thinking whether I would be able to hear any difference. I've already got very good quality gear including amps and DACs. Connected my PC with the Chord Hugo 2 and then that with the THX using the SE input connection. Plugged the Sennheiser HD800S in the THX's 4 pin XLR balanced output. Started with King Crimson's Moonchild. As soon as the track began I first felt surprised and then happy - a big smile on my face :) After that Peter Gabriel, The Clash, The Doors, Radiohead, R.E.M., The Smiths, Pink Floyd.....I don't want to stop listening now. Hard to believe that they've created such a brilliant headphone amplifier at such an affordable price point. I haven't tested the amp with my other headphones yet, but at least for the HD800S I think that I've found the optimum setup. Thinking of buying another amplifier as a backup when the drop returns.

Hi Adam, glad the reviews are helpful! I've learner a lot along the way about my editing processes and you'll find that the audio is much better balanced in my recent videos. Just for the sake of interest, I used to volume match the music and my voice, but the compression used on music made it seem louder even though the peak levels are the same. It's what TV commercials do to get our attention too, but it's not what I wanted in my video so I've compensated for it in recent times (i.e. last 6-12 months I think)

I have to say, Lachlan, you gave one fantastic review. I am shocked that I am your 255th subscriber. Uncanny how things work. But i suspect that number is and will be growing quickly. On with my comment... Thank you for your opinion and the abundance of spec related information. I had already decided on purchasing this amplifier to pair with my Hifiman HE-400i, Senn 58x, etc. I have fallen flat on my face for the Hifiman planar sound and will more than likely be moving on the the HE-1000v2 in the future. I like to analyze the sound presented by my music so coloration isnt favored by me, which is why i was drawn to this amp. Adding in the completely affordable price point sealed the deal for me.

The THX AAA 789 made me realize my primary headphone amp, the Headroom Ultra Desktop Amp, colors the sound to a certain degree. The HUDA soundstage is wider, the treble has more sparkle, midrange is slightly more forward and the bass has more slam. It’s like the HUDA takes everything the THX AAA 789 does to the next level and then some. The THX AAA 789 is a great headphone amp especially for the price. Currently I am using the Topping D70 as the DAC for the THX AAA 789. I can’t wait to buy the Topping D90 DAC to compare it to the D70.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting when it comes to amps that incredible distortion figures don't always equate to the ultimate in sound. For example, the SMSL SP200 uses the same THX technology, implemented differently and yet, due to the other components in the signal path, it doesn't sound the same as the 789. Better capacitors, resistors, signal path design, etc. can all lead to distinctly different sound quality in my experience. Glad you're enjoying the HUDA and the D70!

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Al, sorry about the slow response. I've just discovered all these comments I've never seen (didn't get any notifications). To answer the question, the O2 is a decent design at the price, but it's not as "reference" as it was perhaps intended. Yes, it amplifies the sound without particular coloration, but the quality of the sound is a bit dry and harsh. For $100 USD it's great, but amps like the SMSL SP200 are a reasonable step up for not a huge amount more.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mario and thanks for subscribing. I haven't heard the NFB 1 for a very long time and can't provide a thorough comparison. What I can say is that I own the C-2 anniversary amp which is basically the single ended version of the NFB 1 and the 789 destroys it! I'd choose the 789 over the C-2 everytime and would therefore be more comfortable buying the 789 based on my experiences to date, but please check out some other reviews of the NFB 1 before pulling the trigger. The C-2 falls short for me in terms of the sound being a bit flat (in the soundstage) and unengaging so maybe look for signs of that in NFB 1 reviews to help you decide. Good luck!

I run it with a Topping E50 DAC and find the listening experience through the balanced side with my HD650's very pleasurable. I love the sound of that headphone and the 789 does not alter it. I've got quite a few dacs and amps left over from my evolving interest and I feel I can stay put for now for a couple of reasons. 1, I like the sound quality I am attaining, and 2, I fear it would cost a bundle to upgrade to something much better. That's a really good point, Xeniavader. Whilst I do love my tube amp, the transparent amps like 789 / GSX MK2 are definitely better when it comes to predicting how a certain headphone will sound with it. For example, the NightHawks and Clears are both great with the Mainline (tube) amp, but I don't enjoy the NightOwls as much with it. And yet, the sound signature of the Owls sits in between those other two!? In contrast, all 3 sound great with the 789.

I have this amp and like it a lot. I also have the Schiit Jotunheim and like it a lot. With the HE6SE, I like the Jot a bit more. With anything else it’s hard for me to distinguish them. The three gain levels allows a bit more control with sensitive iems, but the Jot still has great channel balance with my se846, you just have to be a bit more delicate on the knob

Hi Robert, thanks for watching! Ideally I'd go for a balanced DAC, but it's not crucial. I'm about to review the Airist R2R DAC from Drop which is shaving for the price, but not balanced. If you can spend a bit more, I'm a huge fan of Schiit Audio's multibit DACs and the Bifrost is being / has been updated to offer balanced output. Make sure to go for the multibit version (aka Bimby). I use the next model up, the Gungnir Multibit (Gumby) and love it!

Hey Lachlan, I have a question for you. Have you seen the measurements for the new JDS atom amplifier? A lot of people have stated they feel like the difference between the atom and 789 is so slight it cannot be differentiated. I'm wondering if you think there is a audible difference between the two? I am currently listening with the HD6XX, so power is not an issue between the two. Thanks for the excellent video!

Nice review, very detailed and well explained. The thing I want to know though, how does this 789 compare to the Audio-gd sitting behind you!? (And which one is it?) The pros and cons you've pointed out comparing a very neutral amp to colored amps, are kind of a given. I want to know how it stacks up against another very high quality solid state, with lots of power and the same objectives. I happen to own an older NFB-10SE and quite like it, but wonder if either of these newer designs are worth switching to.. Thanks!
@zackw4941
@zackw4941 5 жыл бұрын
Obliterates, you say? If I'm not mistaken, the lowest end Audio-gd with that chassis, is the C-2? Which is a single ended version of the NFB-1, only with a higher voltage PSU to make up the difference in output.. Not really a low end unit, in the scheme of things. If the 789 is really that much better, then it should implicitly obliterate my NFB-10SE.. Which is very interesting at any price, let alone $350! Did I guess your Audio-gd unit correctly? I'll have to hope this comes back up on Massdrop!

I understood the value of having an amp for the first time. But I don't have a DAC. I am using my desktop's onboard audio DAC - SupremeFX S1220A (ASUS Motherboard). I am not sure if I am losing quality here. Massdrop Grace Design DAC is on sale right now. Wondering if I should go for it or use my Desktop's onboard DAC? Agreed, most popular external DACs will sound better than your onboard audio. I also have a 789, and IMO it benefits from a balanced input. I recommend to try to get a DAC with a balanced output if you can find room in the budget. FWIW, I also have a Grace SDAC from Massdrop. I'd say that it's a good DAC alright, but a good balanced DAC will sound better and it will be noticeable with this amp. The hype is real with this amp, it's fantastic and scales with everything I've connected to it.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shoaib, is it gone for good or can you request another production run? (Is there a "request" button?) As for the volume pot, if it's only when you're turning it and you rarely turn it, them maybe not a big deal, but I'd be contacting Drop and see what they say. You might get a partial refund or something if they can't provide warranty repair. Oh, and I'd love to hear your experience with the linear power supply!

@@PassionforSound Sure thing. Now in the process of shifting myself to Canada which has 110V rated PS....also the input voltage of my Linear PSU for the 789. Will share my experience after I set my things there. As for Drop, it's strange! They gave me an option to return the item for full refund maybe in store vouchers but did not offer to replace the unit. They also offered $20 and said I could keep the noisy unit...which is the strange part as they could not replace it. As you know, there is very little competition that performs as well as the 789 at this price point...I mean both the SP200 as well as the Monoprice 888 amp + dac don't very much compete or fall short in one or the other measurement criteria ( I could be wrong here) when compared to the 789 so it's kinda irreplaceable for me at this time. Cheers and keep up the good work mate!
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure how much you paid for the 789 as it's changed over time, but if you can take the refund, I might have a good replacement option for you depending on budget. The Topping A90 is brilliant and better than the 789 in all ways but one. It's not a good option for IEMs, but for full size headphones it's a really nice option. If it's out of the budget for now though (or you use IEMs) I'd take the $20 and be happy using the SMSL as a pre-amp - still an incredible setup for the price! In theory (I haven't specifically looked) you could have someone good with soldering hardwire the signal path to bypass the pot altogether. You'd actually improve the sound slightly. You could probably rig it so the knob stayed in place so it's not ugly, but that could offer a win-win if the pot ever totally dies.
@Shoaibexpert
@Shoaibexpert 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Wow! That's really beautiful advice. Put my mind at ease...never thought that I could bypass the pot on my 789. Cheers mate!

Quick question, as I am just getting into the audiophile world ... balanced vs unbalanced : my understanding of the 4 pin XLR plug is that there is only one ground, then R+/R-/L+/L- as the 4 pins. With that in mind, both sides share the same ground. It wouldn't be the case if two 3 pin XLR were used. But in the case of a 4 pin XLR, am I correct to assume that we lose the theoretical separation that we were supposed to get from the separate grounds ?
@bix64000
@bix64000 5 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Thanks a lot for the reponse. I also looked it up on wikipedia and turns out that separation comes from no crosstalk between L and R because the + and - in each channel cancels out any EM field that could create crosstalk, the way it does with TRS connections.

Although I don't have the Arya to try with the amp, the 789 has lots of power and should have no issues with the Arya. Yo, can someone help me out here. I just got in my 789 yesterday (the older Massdrop version if that makes a difference) and I have to paired with my Mbox Mini 3rd gen audio interface via Mogami XLR. I'm using my Audeze LCD X with this setup with high hopes of beautiful clarity and neutral listening, but some things seem off. One, my gain switch doesn't appear to work. I'm currently listening to music on youtube, turning the switch from 1 to 2 to 3 and get no sound difference. Another thing is I've noticed that while some things sound great there are some things that sound almost fuzzy/distorted or just low quality. Is that due to my volume on the 789 or the Mbox (audio interface) or maybe my PC?? I just really want some help with this so I can get back to listening to some awesome music and work on MY music. Prease and a tank you

@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, the gain switch should definitely make a noticeable difference - as if you're turning the volume control about 15-20 degrees each time. It's not a HUGE change, but should be audible. As for the changing sound quality? That sounds like it's source related (like the recordings). If it's from track-to-track you might just be experiencing the drawback of good gear - you can know tell what's poorly recorded. Alternatively, if it comes and goes even during one song then you might have a fault somewhere. Is it track-by-track? Or does the quality drop mid-track sometimes?
@brucekhamp6859

@@PassionforSound Thank you so much for the prompt reply! Would the gain problem have anything to do with the fact that I'm using 2 xlr out to my audio interface but am running the Audeze LCD X's through 1/4 SE (single ended)?? As for the quality, I've only ran songs through my PC on youtube with my setup and have played some tracks over and over again to test for difference of quality and all seem to sound great. It's really when I go to play like a game or something where the audio starts to sound distorted or at a low quality, but I never noticed that before with my old headphones which were decent.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
The gain issue shouldn't be affected by the setup you've got, I think. Have you got anything else you can plug in (and unplug the LCDs) just in case? As for the sound quality, where's the audio coming from for games (PC motherboard, DAC, etc)?

@@PassionforSound So I did some more troubleshooting last night and it would appear that the sound quality is being affected by the Mbox Mini 3 aka what I'm using for a DAC. 14:37 can some one explain this general rule of thumb: headphones impedance should be at least 8 times the amplifier's impedance. Why is that? maximum power transfer occurs when the two impedances are matched so if anything I would have assumed that matching the impedances would be the ideal. So clearly efficient power transfer is not the main concern... so what is?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Hobomnky, as I understand it, this rule is about damping factors and frequency response. The amplifier has to stop the driver as well as move the driver and the 8x difference in impedance is all about how well the amp controls the driver. Others may be able to provide a better / more accurate technical explanation of this part. What I can say for certain is that if the output impednace of the amp isn't 8x less than the earphone/headphone it will likely have an impact on both the frequency response and general tonality of the 'phones. This is particularly the case for headphones that have vastly different impedances at different frequencies as some frequencies may be affected by the amp's OI while others are not.
@hobomnky
@hobomnky 4 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Thanks for the quick response, it sent me on a 2 hour deep dive into this. Some of the Wikipedia pages I found gave me cancer though, but I think I understand the overall idea best from your comment. Also I should have said "So clearly *maximum* power transfer is not the main concern" because it turns out that the power transfer efficiency actually goes up as the load impedance to source impedance ratio goes up. You can see it here for the case when the impedances are purely resistive www.desmos.com/calculator/xean75bbum Also the derivative on the power delivered graph shows that at an impedance ratio of 8x the variation of the power delivered as a result of variation of the load impedance is significantly smaller than values less than 8x, with diminishing results above 8x. An impedance ratio of 2x seems to be the worst case scenario. 1x gives no delivered power variation which is ideal but a 7% deviation from the 1x ratio leads to worse power delivery variation than 8x. I'm curious to know how all this changes for impedances that are not just resistive. So basically the load impedance changes with frequency, leading to the power it gets to change with frequency so certain frequencies get amplifier more than others.... that was fun to learn

No sweat - glad it all made sense in the end. I remember reading about this years ago and it kind of melted my brain a bit which is why I summed it up in my head as I explained it before - probably not the most accurate explanation, but hopefully good enough! Check out these measurements (particularly the impedance vs frequency graph) for the beyerdynamic T1s and Sennheiser HD650s for great examples of headphones that are influenced by output impedance (and part of the reason why people often pair these with high output impedance OTL amps - particularly the old T1s). @@PassionforSound cool to see some examples, I was expecting the higher frequencies to have higher impedance but instead they have a peak which kind of looks like and impedance peak from a resonant frequency. So maybe there is some parallel capacitance with the driving coil, or maybe its some acoustics related effect.

I bought this Amp and sold him 2 days later. The price is fair and the build quality is good but the sound was too bright for my taste and also very 2 dimensional. Im listen normally through an RME FireFace 400 and I thought that I needed maybe a Headphone Amp to enhance the sound but the THX did not do that. The sound from the RME is way more fuller and warmer. The THX is a very clean and precise Amp as well as the RME but there was no enjoyment for me to listen with the 789. For everyone who are thinking about buying it I would suggest to looking for a used Fireface. Im from Europe and Ive paid $420 with shipping and duty and for this price you about in the same price range of a used RME Interface and as a big bonus do you have then a very good Audio Interface with enough analog I/O and digital I/O and two very good Mic/Instr. Preamps and if you dont listen to Audio files above 192kHz you even doesent need a additional DAC. And for everyone who bought this Amp already is totally fine because the THX is good. Maybe you can enhance the Imaging with better cables and the brightness with matching Headphones or some EQing. This is just MY experience with the THX and in the end you have to check everything by yourself.

@@PassionforSound Everyone has a different taste of listening thats for sure but the reason why I bought this amp is because I thought the THX was very balanced and kind of a reference amplifier but this is not really the case. The RME stuff is not warm per se just in comparison with the THX and Im talking not about Tube vs Solid State warmth but theres a noticeable diference. The FireFace its very linear and well balanced and thats the reason why a lot of professionals use these Interfaces. And also the imaging of the THX is kind of 2D and flat. Maybe you have the opportunity to check a RME Interface by yourself one day ...and if I continue to talk like that about RME they have to pay me soon:) But in the end it doesent matter ...its all about fun and enjoyment! I've recently bought this amp to add to my Topping A90 as I was looking for an amp with higher input impedance to pair with my Ares II (my other DAC - D90). Wow... I was not expecting this amp to change how both of my DACs sound so much. I thought that the A90 was supposed to be the "king" of clean and linear sound, especially paired with the D90. But there is no denying it - it sounds muffled and slightly congested compared to the 789. Everything else in my system stayed the same, including all the cables so there are no variables at play here. Did you have the same experience? Or am I losing my mind? 😁 It seriously sounds way cleaner than the A90, and not just in terms of incisiveness but also airiness (and thus the perception of soundstage). At first I thought it didn't have the same macrodynamics as the A90 but now I think it's just how I perceive them because things are more clearly separated.

That's a very interesting experience. I don't think I had the 789 when I got the A90, but I don't rate the A90 quite so highly as many. It's a nice amp, but great measurements don't actually mean better sound so what you're hearing could well be accurate.

@@PassionforSoundI'm just astounded that the difference is so big, individual notes on the A90 almost sound more glued together and treble is much less crisp. I guess it reflects the devices' reputation where A90 is apparently known to "round off" the edges whilst the THX amp is considered too sharp by many. I just thought that any differences between two flat-measuring devices would be minimal. Not the case by my ears (I'm using high-res headphones - Utopia and HEKse). The A90 also brings everything more forward... strange. Would you still consider the 789 as "perfectly neutral" as it gets for reasonable money or have you come across anything better since then? :)
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
It's great that you've had the chance to hear the differences for yourself. I actually find the 789 to have its own colouration in that it can be a touch artificial sounding when compared to some other devices (e.g. something like a Geshelli Labs Archel 2.5 or E2). The 789 is definitely great for the price, but I don't actually think it's the last word in neutrality because it sounds like it has its own sound (for better or worse because almost every amp does)

@MistaLova-Lova 2 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Thanks. I must admit that after some more listening it's clear to me that I was too quick to criticise the A90 so much. I still think that the THX 789 appears to sound cleaner and crisper but at the cost of less body/meat and worse macrodynamics. Kinda like the HD800 vs Focal Clear - I still think the former has better treble and is potentially slightly more high-res, but the latter will be the one most people will reach for more often to listen to music. The THX somehow sounds like there is a little bit of space between me and the music which reminded me of the time when I switched from using Tidal/Quobuz directly (and thus allowing for Microsoft Windows' drivers to process the signal) to using Roon (bypassing said software) - it eliminated that barrier between me and the music. I now think the the A90 does the same when compared with the THX 789. I am just leaving this comment so that someone browsing through this thread lookng for advice/other people's opinions is not left misled by my previous comments (which are still true, but it wasn't the full picture).

It's not so common for people to be able to openly admit a change of opinion on this hobby, but it's commendable because it shows that you're listening with an open mind and without your ego needing to be "right". First impressions on this hobby are often slightly misleading because the differences we hear can be exciting compared to what we're used to, but extended listening can reveal more nuance in the comparisons.
