Fantastic comparison, and exactly how I went. Darkvoice for fun, THX 789 for accuracy (JDS Labs atom until my drop order arrives). It's the best of both worlds.

@@Lmao-ke9lq I was tired of waiting for the 789, and ended up getting the Monoprice 887 shortly after this comment. I have been listening on the 887 ever since. The Atom doesn't hold a candle to it, but that $100 price point is pretty sweet depending on your headphones.

metal571 I have to say that I prefer that pronunciation vs HIGH-FI-MAN, which to me sounds like the equivalent of “Great Audio Guy” or “Audiophile Cool Dude.” Still sounds ridiculous for a headphone manufacturer, but maybe a bit less like Chinese misunderstanding of western English.

I have the Monoprice Monolith THX 788 and the LCX and I love both and would recommend both at the same time. The 788 has the analytical side and the LCX has that slightly warmer side. I think they make a great pairing along with the CTH. With my selection of amps, I can be critical listening or relaxed listening. I find that the LCX even though it has a slightly warmer hint to it is still a very capable amp with a detailed sound. I do not hear any issues with off center placement versus other amps. I love both amps and I find that I use them both equally, helps with different headphones as not all headphones play well on a certain amp.

Cheers for the review Joshua. I have the 'Airist R-2R Dac' paired with the 'Drop THX AAA 789' and the '"Cavalli Tube Hybrid" Trinity. A wonderful pairing, when I feel the need to add a little more warmth to the endgame I run my cans out of the Cavalli. Just My 2 cents worth. The 3 units I have mentioned all are exceptional for what they are. I usually listen on my "Alpha Dogs" by "Mr. Speakers'. No issues at all running those.

It's an R2R DAC, and it's not balanced. R2R DACs aren't clean and transparent, just like tube amps for example. ASR has measured the Airist R2R as well, which shows quite disappointing performance. So no, it's not a good pairing with the 789. Better get the SDAC-B.

Currawong is right, drop uses the exact same case for the a similar product. And they're being so lazy on putting the 789 together it has a lot of dead space, sodead space that actually may be usable to out the power brick inside instead of outside. Other than that, this fight really better pick the 789 and EQ it the way you like it.

Agree that synergy is important - hence warm planars + neutral-bright solid amps and bright dynamics + warm transformer-coupled tube amps. I don’t think Arya is warm, though. So it seems like it would be a good match with Cavali, Burson Conductor 3 or another tube amp such as Woo Audio WA7D. Is THX 789 made in China or U.S.?

@Danger Zone With the 789, it will come down to your headphone far more than the amp when it comes to sound characteristics. It's really unbelievably transparent and will make the differences in sound signatures between headphones much more apparent. If you have a headphone that does punchy bass, they will be punchy as all hell on this amp.

Why is it that accuracy is always equated to "clinical" and "warm" to "musical". Both "warm" and "clinical" are forms of distortion; "warm" usually second harmonic and "clinical" to odd harmonic. An accurate sound should be effectively a wire with gain and convey much more realistically what comes out of the mastering desk. I've got two Benchmark DACs both of which are, I would say, very accurate and both of which have been accused of being "clinical" because of that. The Benchmark DACs I own are anything but clinical, they don't mask the music through "warm" mellifluous "rose tinted" spectacles, they present the sound in as uncoloured and honest a manner as they can; and the sound can be hugely enjoyable in the musical sense if the performance is up to it and the mastering hasn't been done for maximum compression. So much audio gear tries to present a version of the music that the designer thinks will please the audience and is voiced accordingly; such equipment is anything but true high fidelity.

I hear you, brother. I have 3 headphone amps and can't see myself parting with any of them. On the main system, I have my reference THX AAA 789 which was the last one to arrive, but I route the passthrough to a Monolith Liquid Spark which I was using before the THX. Why? Because it's slightly warmer and makes someof my single-ended headphones more enjoyable. Sound familiar? On my work desktop, I use a JDS Atom, primarily for its two inputs. I use the Atom to switch between my phono amp and my DAC. I find the Atom is somewhere in between the THX and the Liquid Spark, less powerful than the first, less warm than the latter. Still a great hundred dollar amp and perfect for this application.

I'm in the camp where the headphones are the main factor in sound - of course. But I think there is definitely more than just a 1-3% difference in sound profile switching between amps (mainly between tube and SS) but there are also quite big differences to be found among SS amps and tube amps themselves. Sound quality is subjective but signature I would say is more objective and there are quite substantial differences in terms of how amplifiers sound and perform.

I'd say the difference is more like 15-20%. LCX is a good amp that simply is inferior in every way to the THX. For me upgrading to the THX was like getting a new pair of glasses with a different prescription. Everything is clearer and when I go back to the LCX it feels like wearing old glasses. They work but after more and more time with the new glasses the old seem more and more dull. I don't I could recommend an LCX to anyone now with the THX and similar products available from Monolith. Hold on to your money, sell some mid-fi headphones, eat out less and get a THX.

Does anyone here have any experiences with ordering stuffs from massdrop to EU?

Yes, it takes forever and the taxes are high -- for the UK, took about 1-3 months for the few times I ordered from there, and IIRC customs were about 30% of the value. Sucks.

See what had happened was... I bought THX in July when it released again and then bought the Cavelli to hold me over until now, since I was tired of my Vali 2. So... I guess I'll have both (I have the AMP/DAC version).

Wait what? Single ended are not the main focus? 789 is not even full balanced, of course single ended is it'a main focus.

Love your site man - after following already many of your reviews - great stuff ! But too bad you tested the 2 Amps with the Airist R2R Dac, which you call a great Dac, really ? This is one of the worst measuring dacs on the market and any anyone should avoid buying it, as a matter of fact.

I don't understand the reductio. You move on to describe how using "overly analytical" or "bright" headphones like the HD800s is good with something more "warm". First off, brightness and warmed can be EQ'd, so buying one device to compliment a single pair of headphones doesn't make sense, because if you ever use any other headphone that isn't "analytical" you've blundered by doubling down on "warmth". Secondly, why ever get "analytical headphones" only to then have to "tame" them with an amplifier? Why not simply get the cleanest amp possible, and simply buy headphones with the sound signature you prefer. And simply EQ anything else you would want? I just cannot get passed these virtues. And this is before we even properly define the terms used in the conversation, as for some reason, the only two types of amps that exist from the reviews you've done is basically "warm" or "analytical". I truly believe you would be breaking serious ground if you could do a content piece on what DSP and EQ can achieve. Likewise blind testing some of this stuff as even claiming what you hear is itself up to question. Finally, I hope you're not seeing my post as antagonizing. But hope you see some of the holes here :\

@CronTheCob
@CronTheCob 5 жыл бұрын
Tin t3 is a totally different category than these amps. That's like putting a ferrari engine in a in a honda civic. You're never gonna be able to pull out the full potential of the amp through those headphones. But if you're going for it, I would pair the t3's with the cavelli, the t3's are already very bright and the thx will only add to the brightness, whereas the cavelli, it's a little warmer, which will help bring down the harshness of the t3's.
