Massey 135 tractor with broken steering box repair

This tractor was left on a hill without handbrake engaged and must have been knocked out of gear, rolled down the hill and front wheel hit a tree snapping it back and breaking the rotor in the steering box. Lucky no more damage to the old tractor. This video show's my progress in fixing it so far.

Thanks - a very handy video. The old MF35 workshop manual talks about this method of getting the balls into the nut but without pictures it's anything but clear. It was very handy for me as the new shaft that I bought came with the nut half off the shaft and some of the balls floating about in the packaging. One handy tip in the manual was to use the steering wheel temporarily fitted to the shaft to act as a stand while you work on the shaft - obvious but I didn't think of it myself.

I asked.....they said no. Saw the mechanic down there, he said lucky as steering shaft usually goes through top of gearbox, not an uncommon repair for them. He also said good luck getting back together, you need six hands where two fit. Des??

Actually i've talked to quite a few people & this is not the industrial as it is petrol & i have been told only diesels were industrial. If you chip at the paint under the yellow is grey and red. The yellow was blasted on the whole tractor, gauges and all! God only knows why. When we first got the tractor was yellow, dented and had a front end loader on it. We had the loader removed and the tractor repainted (budget version) and all panels straightened. Now starting to look worse for wear again.

While your changing the steering rod you should try & get one with a tighter spiral, so that the steering isn't so direct. Might be worth asking anyway.

Yeah i need quite a few parts in the end. Hopefully can get them later in the week. Steering on this tractor was always a bit loose so maybe will be good after this. You did want me to do a video on the tractor.....guess this is not what you had in mind!

Fergusons go forever, they don't know how to die. Then when they say they have had enough will keep going anyway. Best thing, everything is still available to give it a complete restoration one day and get it back to it's best!!

I am assembling my David Brown Steering. Identical system and I was scared I would never get it back together. Now I will. Does anyone know how many ball bearings there should be ?

The steering column or shaft spins freely on my Ferguson FE35 and will lift right out of the steering box. I haven't had a chance to drain the oil and take a look inside. Is it possible that the pin at the bottom of the column is broken and the bottom assembly has fallen out rather than one of the rocker shafts is broken?? In the parts manual, it indicates that the steering shaft assembly is 'keyed'.

I would say you are right, seems like you have lost the ball bearings on the column. At the top of the column just below the steering wheels is a bearing set up that should stop the column lifting out. Once it has lifted out and the ball bearings drop out then you will have to pull it apart to re assemble it. If this is the case then you will have to sort that top bearing set up out or it will happen again and they are a bugger to put back together, have to take half the tractor apart to work on the steering box.

Stash Kurten No it is mechanical gearbox. Power steering would be good though. Just got the parts from sparex.
