Massey Ferguson 231 Fuel System Gas Tank, hand pump and filter overhaul

Engine on the Massie Ferguson 231 has acted weird a couple of times by slowing down with no throttle response to an almost die a couple of time. That happened after 15 minutes running. I believe there must be an obstruction in the fuel system. The fuel tank valve vas extremely dirty so as soon as the fuel in the filter cup was consumed, engine started to starve fuel which could not be replenish by the obstructed valve in a sufficient flow.
I overhauled the fuel tank installing a new sender and valve, installed a new hand pump, blew air in all the lines and replaced the fuel filter.

I also want to add, for those who would like to know, the BALDWIN ENGINE OIL FILTER PART NUMBER for the Massey Ferguson 231 tractor is BT215. I have used the Baldwin BT215 engine oil filter and Baldwin BF825 fuel filter in the past and they are top quality, excellent filters! I either use Napa Gold, Wix, Baldwin, Donaldson, or OEM filters on my 231. Nothing else!

hahaha, well it is a never ending learning process. There are occasions where that patience get tested for good, i.e. a broken bolt on a tight spot, an stripped thread. Then I can see tools flying in the shop.

Another Excellent video on the Massey Ferguson 231!!! THANK YOU!!! I’ve did 16 hours of bush hogging on mine on the hunting lease over the past 2 weeks. Will you PLEASE make a video showing the Fuel Gauge that you installed and with the tractor running?? And YES, I’m not gonna sugar coat it, removing and installing the fuel tank on the 231 is a BITCH!! I’ve only had mine off about 3 times over the course of 16 years! The last time was about 3 years ago when the engine decided to blow a head gasket. Also, you need to add the “outer stabilizer chains” to the parts list that you’ve created under your videos. I didn’t know the 231 had a replacement fuel sender unit that was available for purchase aftermarket. Good to know!! I’ve only seen 5 hole sender units for sale, not 6 hole units that the 231 takes. The inside of my tank has a lot of rust, but it’s not giving me any trouble. It could use a new fuel cap though. Last year I had to install a new strainer on the inside of the fuel petcock because it came off inside the tank and rust got in the supply line and gave me trouble. Got it fixed and been running fine ever since! I hope you like your 231 half as much as I love mine!!! KEEP THE VIDEOS AND INFORMATION COMING!!!!!!!

Thank you Travisricks3426. I'm working on a complete dash board restoration so yes, I will show the gauges working, maybe in two tree weeks. I am having a blast working on this tractor, I really like it. The way it handles the mower and drives is great.- Still dealing with power steering issues. Thank you Jeff. WD40 rust removal worked pretty well dissolving rust. Depending on how much rust you have instructions recommend from 1h up to 24 hours application.

I need to put this WD-40 stuff in the tank on my 231. It is full of rust! It’s running fine though, I had to put a new strainer screen on the inside of the fuel petcock last year. I went ahead and installed a new fuel lift pump while I was at it also! I’ve had my ‘98 MF 231 for 16 years. It’s been my absolute favorite tractor that I’ve ever owned! The only major problem that I’ve ever had with it was a blown head gasket 3 years ago. My mechanic friend fixed it for me, but it costed $1,000. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY 231!!!!!!

@BUTTEWORKS How do you know the aftermarket tank will fit and what fuel sender would fit the tank? The aftermarket tank looks to take a 5 hole sender unit. That’s all I’ve ever been able to find aftermarket, and that’s the reason I’ve never bought one.

I didn't notice that but now that you say so, I can see the new tanks have only 5 bolts. You would need a new sender in that case. On a quick search I could not fine any 6 holes aftermarket tank. I will update the list of items in the description noting this issue. Thank you for the comment, very good point.

Yes...when you buy and fix old tractors or a car You will start to be a REAL MAN! You don't need to visit a psyholigist!!! When you have depresion or others problem lock yourself with this tractor, car in garage and you will alive again! ;) and you will be strongest as new man!
