This huge North Carolina textile factory was built in 1946 and at one time had 1,000 employees. The business was closed in 1984 but luckily for us they left some very cool equipment and machines left behind.

I worked at a factory while it was winding down it’s operations. It is so sad and creepy, I saw it go from a booming facility with lots of machinery down to nothing with a few people walking around sweeping things up. It had been open since the 1960s, some people had been there since the early 70s. I’d work nights and I can remember times when they’d send the crews home due to not having work. It’d just be myself and a few other people, most of the lights would be off. It was so sad watching it happen.

Oh, but I miss those days when we could get a job at the shirt factory. Or infant and children clothes. Jeans, underwear. I moved to North Carolina to work at Cannon Mills, weaving. Those buildings are gone, torn down. Sheets and towels. All made in America. A lifetime at those jobs was more than a paycheck, it was self-esteem. And people lived good too. New cars and nice homes. Do industrial sewing machines even exist in America, I think they are rare. Fruit of the loom in Greenville Ky was the last I heard of those types of jobs and they were closing due to the China Flu. I wish clothes , sheets and towels were manufactured in America to the extent that they used to be.

I do a lot of work for a dude who owns several textile companies. Mostly upholstery fabric and such (I restore antiques). He has more money than almost any customer I've worked for. His summer home is insane. But I've heard very bad things about his factories. They are all over, Mexico, Taiwan, etc. Very hazardous conditions, poor pay, child labor. Goes on and on. His last house he built he tore down three waterfront homes and built one on the three plots. Six car garage. Probably 15,000 square feet. I don't think he spends three weeks a year there.

@@ls6-ss413 I have gotten so serious about not buying" made in China " plus another label that I , at this moment, don't recall the letters, but it's also a China label. Anyway, I look at labels. Recently I wanted a new spatula. Walmart had 4 or 5 brands. Each different quality and different brands, different prices all labeled " made in China" or the letters that also represents China. So... I went to Kroger. Kroger had two brands each different quality and price. Both made in China. I went online looking for kitchen ware. And I found about 8 brands made in America.

Watching videos of folks such as yourself exploring these old factories has always been fascinating. It reminds me of my place of work. The steel plant I work at was built in the mid 1800's and then added onto during the 40's for the war effort. And most of the machinery we still use is from that area. The older part of the plant is closed off and falling apart but can still be accessed from inside the plant. Are motor rooms are still slate board and open contact and mostly all dc energy. I can honestly say it's fun going threw the older parts of the plant

10:11 You are absolutely right that it's wise not to interact with anyone else whom you observe in a not-officially-on-public-display place like this; unlike you, those other people might not just be innocent explorers taking a look around; they might be using drugs, hiding weapons, stashing contraband, or committing other crimes that they wouldn't want anyone else to know about. Paranoid criminals like that will sometimes kill anyone whom they meet if they are afraid that those other people might report them or otherwise interfere with their evil/illegal activities.

Impractical and expensive. Many of these places are full of toxics like asbestos, lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and much more. That would have to be mitigated. The buildings wouldn't be up to current health, safety, or building codes. They can't even be demolished for recycling many times, due to asbestos. Just not cost feasible to repurpose, retrofit, or even tear them down.

I hope you do have an "Asbestos Awareness Training" because I could see corrugated roof sheets 1:26 which are full of asbestos and they release fibres when broken - some of them I saw broken which means you will be walking over asbestos - then you will take asbestos fibres into your car then into your house on your shoes. Be careful and do complete that online training just so you are aware for the future.

Simply walking passed some asbestos will do nothing. Some people are terrified of it haha do you forget that 30 years ago it was everywhere? In every building and every school. Long term exposure exposure is the problem with asbestos, not simply walking passed it in an old building.

The fire appeared to be in a small electrical switchgear room so most likely copper bandits burning insulation from wiring. It would be very interesting to do before/ after images and interviews with prior plant workers that'd be approx 70 now. I know that's a huge undertaking and no criticism of your very enjoyable work. Sometimes it seems like an eye blink and the people and places......? This factory is beating the odds so far.

I'm a scrapper, and I understand the sentiment, but you don't know the legal and environmental ramifications. If you buy it, you assume all liability for anything that happens there. And you better believe an army of litigious opportunists, insurance scammers, and lawyers would be waiting to strike. You'd also assume ENVIRONMENTAL liability, and might someday, as administrations and laws change, be forced to clean up the site, at YOUR expense. Better to let us scavengers do the dirty work and risk our own health.

@@geoffbell166 Indeed. I'm a scrapper, and I just got 3.24 a lb for #2 copper in Tacoma. Various forms of aluminum (sheet, cast, extruded, etc) are .60 to .73 a lb. Yellow brass is 2.40. Even steel is over $200 a ton. (I've seen $450 a ton for steel in the 2000s, when China was buying most of it.)
