The background to the battle was the death of the childless King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, which set up a succession struggle between several claimants to his throne. Harold was crowned king shortly after Edward's death, but faced invasions by William, his own brother Tostig, and the Norwegian King Harald Hardrada (Harold III of Norway). Hardrada and Tostig defeated a hastily gathered army of Englishmen at the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, and were in turn defeated by Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge five days later. The deaths of Tostig and Hardrada at Stamford Bridge left William as Harold's only serious opponent. While Harold and his forces were recovering, William landed his invasion forces in the south of England at Pevensey on 28 September 1066 and established a beachhead for his conquest of the kingdom. Harold was forced to march south swiftly, gathering forces as he went.
The exact numbers present at the battle are unknown as even modern estimates vary considerably. The composition of the forces is clearer: the English army was composed almost entirely of infantry and had few archers, whereas only about half of the invading force was infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry and archers. Harold appears to have tried to surprise William, but scouts found his army and reported its arrival to William, who marched from Hastings to the battlefield to confront Harold. The battle lasted from about 9 am to dusk. Early efforts of the invaders to break the English battle lines had little effect. Therefore, the Normans adopted the tactic of pretending to flee in panic and then turning on their pursuers. Harold's death, probably near the end of the battle, led to the retreat and defeat of most of his army. After further marching and some skirmishes, William was crowned as king on Christmas Day 1066.

dude this is absolutely mindblowing. The quality of this video is on the same level as an animated movie. I can't believe how small this channel is, it is frustrating that such great channels always end up small. I have probably watched 20 videos on this battle and this is definitely the best!

Thank you very much! I'll probably make a couple of videos with topics that are focusing on the wider Medieval period and then Rome should be within reach ! EDIT: I'm not actually uploading the videos at 4k resolution due to my poor internet connection. It will take 3-4 days for a file of that size to be uploaded, unfortunately.

It's commonly accepted, but debated. It's shown in the Bayaux tapestry that he was hit in the eye, but this was merely a commemorative story told by the winners. So could be full of a lot of propaganda. Also some have said that it was originally depicting a spear that was later changed to an arrow. Only thing we know for sure is that he was killed on the hill.

And with that, Britain was no longer an Anglo/Norse nation, but became a Franco/Latin nation. Just think, if Godwinson had stayed south or fought William first, that at the worst, Britain would have been Anglo/Norse for centuries to come. No castles, no rapes, no harrowing of the north, no hundred years war or war of the roses, or Tudors... Alas...

The hairstyle of William is all wrong. The Normans had their head shaved on the backside. Harold having a mustache is correct, and so is the shaved William. Also sad with a channel that have videos in a documentary style, but use AI voices that can't pronounce various, simple words. It should be a bit embarrassing with a video about something in the Middle Ages, but not able to pronounce Medieval - ("meddle eval"...) I was considering subscribing, but there's too much AI, and videos getting spewed out without enough work or study behind them, when meant to describe important, historical events. There's lots of other errors. Just a view of the Bayeux Tapestry and bit by bit explanation of it, would have had a higher educational value. Gladly here's rules coming on KZbin that will be working against synthetic content.

First of all, I worked endless hours for over two months to create this video. I hand crafted almost everything from the battle maps the strategic maps to the armor the soldiers are wearing. Working 10 and 14 hours per day to produce that. Secondly, the Voice Over is probably the easiest part of the creation of this video which takes no more than a day to the artist that's making it. Finally, the Voice Over isn't AI, it was made by a real Voice Artist. In fact, NO AI was used in the creation of this video.

@@historybattles3D Hi, I'm sorry if I offended you. I never put into question your hard work , my comment about AI content being "spewed out" was regarding the whole of KZbin, and not aimed at you in specific. I should have describe that better, if it's possible to see anywhere my previous comments on other channels and other videos, you'll see I've been in a day-long rage about the AI-thing and how some are able to spew out low quality stuff at an amazing speed, all but polluting KZbin where people like you, are working hard, to present something good. My main criticism was just tiny errors, that make the good work with graphics and such (that made me want to subscribe) into something that don't seemed well researched, because of the small errors I noticed after having read a book about the Norman invasion of Britain a month or two ago. This made the dozens of channels that only use Total War video game graphics, into something I remember to prefer listening to, because it had lots of hard facts, that people that want to learn about history enjoy listening to and learning from. I don't know what Voice Over is, but it is clearly synthetic, not your own voice. Why not narrate it yourself? If English is not your native language, like with me, you still seem to master it fairly well? Anyway, good luck with the channel. Remember that the internet is full of people like me that rather criticize the tiny errors they can find, instead of giving empty praise. I certainly didn't mean anything bad. It was just a comment, showing interest. Alv V, Norway

@@elvenkind6072 Thank you for the detailed reply. The only thing that made me reply in a slightly aggressive tone was the mention of AI. I haven't used AI for anything. Everything was painstakingly created by me and I don't even have a second person to help with anything. As for the Voice OVer. I thought that outsourcing the VO my help the channel grow faster BUT the results are quite mixed. The videos performed quite well with this Voice OVer despite the backlash from viewers about specific mispronunciations. But from now on I'll be doing all of my voice overs given the bad performance of the latest videos and the lackluster profitability of the channel.
