I think it's wonderful that your wooded area supports a bear. You have the electric fence, as long as that is working your fine. There is a gadget that attaches to electric fence. It produces a visual light [ not small ]. So during nights you can see it lit. You know fence is hot. The only worry is about power outages. Your relying on just the dogs. The cattle will be fine, but chickens and honey bees are the bigger interest to the bear. Maybe a single strand of solar-powered would be a future addition? Also I read an article on a study about bears years ago. Bears and Honey > electric fence will keep a bear away with a few rules applied. Keep hive boxes at a distance from fence. Bears 1st get attracted by honey smell and go investigate. That's when you want the fence changing their mind. Once a bear is committed to going for the honey, the fence is less of a deterrent. Have a low hot line because the bear will try to dig under. If the hive is just out of reach, (the bear being a honey junkie ) the bear will ignor the zaps & rush the fence. Wish I remembered the study better> how many feet distance from when just attracted to point of commitment.

About egg bravery. You are brave enough to transport eggs in a metal basket. Or it is plastic? But still, you need to stack them. Goose I get, hard ones. But at least for chicken I would have some plastic collector. Oh, never saw the results of that fancy honey hive. Cannot wait to see results.

My FAVORITE part of this video happens just after the 10 minute mark. Morgan is shuffling the gosling escapees back toward the open gate and Toby in his normal everyday exemplary manner sauntered out of the gate with perfect timing and the "im just minding my business, nothing to see here" so he didn't scare the escapees away from the fence and then puts himself in the perfect spot so the goslings were herded back towards the open gate. That right there.... is a man's best friend!

I wouldn’t mind hound hunting if it followed some basic rules. If a animal runs into a no hunting area, game over. Plus no use of mechanized vehicles. If you want to persistent hunt like ancient people then you better have the fitness to run and chase with the dogs and animals, no sitting in a car and watching the hunt on a iPad before walking up snd shooting a treed bear

Dude I lived in the boonies with black bears everywhere, and to act like they’re this insanely dangerous menace (like those hunters are suggesting) is so laughable. Sure don’t try to engage them, but that’s true of any wild animal, especially the large ones. Coyotes are more aggressive than they are! Most black bears are very risk adverse, they typically don’t want to start a fight with anything that could do any sort of damage unless the bear has cubs or some other mitigating factors. Big dogs are usually enough of a deterrent. I’d be more worried about your cats and your garbage cans than anything else! Speaking of garbage, keeping all your trash and your animals’ feed locked up tight somewhere like your barn or a shed will help a lot!

Hi Morgan and Allison, that catnip looks great! I'd highly recommend you start harvesting it now (or sooner), as it looks pretty tall now. If it gets too old, it'll go to seed, and then the leaves lose their potentcy. Also, if you pinch off those tender tops, the plants will grow more width-wise, and you'll get even more. I understand you can make tea from catnip; but beware, it might make you frisky. 🐱

In a recent (July 17, 2023) fascinating New Yorker article entitled, "The Bear in Your Back Yard", Jill Lepore writes: "It was during another housing boom, in the industrializing England of the eighteen-thirties, that the poet Robert Southey wrote 'The Story of the Three Bears', a fable about how it’s not the bears who are the burglars-it’s us, peeping through their windows and barging through their doors, sitting in their chairs and eating up their porridge. In the words of Wee Bear, ‘someone’s been lying in my bed,’ and, well, here we are...Bears aren’t sleeping in our beds; we’re sleeping in theirs."

Pro tip as a fellow person with ADHD: Always put stuff in the same place. Make it a habit. My hat? Always goes on a specific peg next to the door. My wallet? In summer, it's in my clutch with my car keys which goes right next to my computer chair. In winter, it's in my coat pockets. My keys? See above My phone? In my hand or right next to me. And yes, this is the hardest one to keep track of and I've had to backtrack several times to find it. My shoes? Right next to the door. My cane? Right next to the door. My meds? In the end table next to my computer desk. And your habit locations can be anything you like. Just make it somewhere that makes sense to you and make it a habit to always put it there. And then hope your partner doesn't move it on you... Again.

I think judging by the way Allison let Morgan just do whatever with his office spaces, if its within his space it wont be moved, and if its anywhere else but communicated about, it also wont be moved. I have really sever adhd myself and I do do this but i could really benefit a lot from doing it with more things. I also just want to reduce what I have and have less things. Feels like the more i have the harder it is to keep track of everything and I hate organizing tooo.

I know I'm often critical. But I also really like that you understand that we have to coexist with wildlife, and also the wild predators. And you do quite a lot to keep your animals safe, with fences, guardian dogs, and so on. That's how it should be. And not like in Norway, here farmers leave their sheep and other livestock out on pasture in nature, alone and no-one watching them. Then they get upset if one of our few predators like wolfs here kill some of them. Even if far more sheep die due to accidents, disease, and so on, because they're left to wander alone for months in summer. And many wolves and other large predators are legally hunted and shot, even if they're strongly to critically endangered here. It's just sad.

I think its an amazing feature of your farm to see what kind of offspring the different breeds of ducks that you raise create. I'm devastated that you lost all those ducklings in the flood, it would have been so nice to watch them all grow. I get raising ducks isn't a staple part of your business, but at this point ducks are the heritage of GoldShaw Farm!

I contacted fish & game because I found an unusually high number of them hanging out in my yard (20 +!) We worked to disburse them (they were after the town trash dumpsters). No easy meal on that farm while Toby & Abby are there.😊 I wonder if he's still looking for a breeding partner for Toby, then that's a potential third to guard the birds.

Install some high-rez wireless outdoor security cameras set to motion detect mode along your frequently travelled route (use wireless repeaters & solar power if needed). That way, they can all get automatically saved to a dvr/computer/NAS on your home network and you won't have to do those shots anymore unless you're filming while you're travelling or something.

If you have extra gravel from the new barn, you should dump some buckets of it by the gate :), to fill up the hole under, and to make it a bit less slippery in the mud :)

I love what you said about not « hunting your way out of a predator » and rather making sure you have proper fencing etc and livestock guardian dogs and I really hope people would think more like that about wolves where I live (France).

Biennial thistles are particularly noteworthy for their high wildlife value, producing such things as copious floral resources for pollinators, nourishing seeds for birds like the goldfinch, foliage for butterfly larvae, and down for the lining of birds' nests.

Can you show either a time-lapse or picture timeline, as best as you can, of the pig areas before, once introduced, during and after to demonstrate and display what pigs can do to land? I would find this thoroughly interesting. also as a hiker, bears do not hurt you unless you threaten them. the fence and dogs such be more than enough
@ashleycook300
@ashleycook300 10 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say they "do not," bears can still hurt you. They could be diseased, they could be hungry, they could have a cub to protect. But I do agree in MOST cases a bear will typically not pick a fight they aren't sure they can win. So if you let them think you are big loud, and have lots of scary other friends around (live stock guardian dogs for example) they typically won't mess with you. Still a godo idea to stay alert about it though.

I mean, it's probably going to depend on the type of bear. Black bears in general don't attack unless provoked. Grizzlies are... temperamental bears. Sometimes they're just in a bad mood and want to start something. Polar bears... see us as potential food. The trick to avoiding trouble with polar bears is to either make it too much effort for them to hunt you or just... not be anywhere near them.

11:00 Concerning the camera shots: As the entrance to the enclosure is a high frequented area, a fixed camera from the barn or so could make sense - surveilance, timelapse and such shots without turning back. But that's just my mind running wild.

I saw a video of a mountain lion trying to get into the same chicken coop you have for the crazy chickens (my favorite) he wasn't sucessfull, so I think they are safe from the bear. I don't live on a farm, but in the Sonoran desert. People move here for the beauty of the mountains, weather, and such....but then they complain about the wildlife that is here. Just because they build a house, doesn't mean that the Javalina, bobcats, packrats, rabbits etc go away. Like you were saying, have to find a way to coexist, because they are all important to the ecosystem. Yes, coyotes can jump a very high wall, so you can't leave your dog in the backyard.....

I ran into a bear last summer on the trail. It was about 20 feet off trail. It was used to people and didn't budge. Usually they flee. People haven't been stupid and fed it, so it really was not a threat. As long as they don't view you as food or as sexual competition of you are a menstruating female, they generally are not that bad.

I'm pro bear, I just think it would be cool to see what the bear is up to (and you cod use more of the hound hunters clips, they're pure gold) And now I'm off to wait for the reading of the Toby Dog book (and best wishes to Abby, I hope there's nothing more wrong with her than the cut on her leg)

Being that it's traditionally built, it is a work of art, I love seeing all the peg holes like houses from the 14 and 1500's. I live in the UK where we still have some timber framed buildings normally referred to as Tudor/medieval style. Well it worked for them and they've lasted hundreds of years, so nice to see it still used, big thumbs up to those carpenters, they really know their trade.

What a great attitude about the bear. It seems nice enough! Better the devil you know than you don't. The bear may keep coyotes at bay. The next step in rewilding your area would be the reintroduction of beavers. Streams by you would benefit from beaver dams. They slow down the water to keep it in the landscape for dry times. It would create wetlands which would reach the edge of your farm. Speaking of mud, get those pigs moved ASAP! ~with love from the mitten state.

Unless a bear is breaking into your chicken coops or something like that, having them “pass through” the area is not only normal it’s a positive thing just like Morgan said. For the most part, bear eat berries, honey stashes and roots in the summers. They pass through our property every year and never bother anything. Seen them many times on the trail cams. It’s just hard on the old folks who have narrow thinking. Just have to say “bless your heart” which is code for “whatever bro”!!
