Damn, even without all these features I still regard Empire as one of the best historical Total Wars. CA really dropped the ball making Napoleon a standalone expansion. Implementing all the fixes and mechanics from Napoleon into Empire would make the game almost as brilliant as Medieval 2.

I'm no modder but it would be great to have a mechanic similar to "join the crusade" in mtw2 for empire called "join the coalition". The wars of spanish, austrian, and polish succession, the 7 years war, the american revolution, the french revolutionary wars, the great northern war, and of course the napolenoic wars plus many others were infamous for their coalitions. The borders of the world didnt change through conquest alone, but often after negotiated treaties at the end of these grand wars fought by coalitions looking to maintain the balance of europe, and in turn world balance. For me thats the biggest thing missing. (apart from an ai brain)

@@James-sc5dn I actually welcome a little more depth to the campaign map as long as it’s engaging, easy to learn and not overly demanding. I felt that Empire was already simplified enough. I enjoy the new campaign features they’ve added in warhammer. The factions feel quite unique. Three kingdoms is weird because I can’t tell the factions apart, but they’ve improved diplomacy a lot.

Just playing one siege battle is all you need to know about how stuffed up the coding is. It's a real shame, they just bit off more than they could chew when creating the game. Empire TW was the last game who had ambition in its thinking. Shogun 2 was the last well made TW but lacked the ambition. Those two games are the true milestone of the franchise, what comes next is a slow and painful decay.

@@Alesayr No, Rome 2's main "innovation" was hybrid maps (naval & terrestrial). In terms of mechanics, Rome 2 made steps back on all the line. Limited number of armies, restricted diplomacy, AI dumb beyond imagination, unplayable naval warfare, victory points, dumbed down replenishment mechanics, and the first signs of marketting over content syndrom. looking at you Siege of Carthage. Rome 2 lacked on all aspects.

Certainly for historic based games you're right. I'm sure the fantasy stuff is fine if you like that kind of thing, but most people who got into the early TW offerings were looking for historical based games, it's those people who have given up on the TW series, me included. The question is are there enough for CA to even be interested in a remake that would actually need a major redesign? The tarted up Rome re-release was easy because the basic engine was sound. Medieval 2 could be done the same way, but Empire was horribly broken, so new game required

@@tonymccake3057 I'm not sure about WH titles either. I played them, it's some fun for some time, but limitations quickly pop out in regards of gameplay design. Once you hit those, you realize how rigged everything is in those modern TW games, physics, intuition, strategy, don't play any role in higher difficulties: only pure stats and abilities/magic counts. I suspect that most people playing WH:TW in a regular pattern are playing it's WARHAMMER, they're warhammer fans prior (in terms of interest) to be TW players. Some of these guys never played a TW before and only bought the games because the setting was branded Warhammer. And they won't follow up when CA is finished pumping out them juicy DLCs on their "new" platform re-sold 60 bucks... If they screw up their next historical title, they won't have neither Warhammer fans, neither historical interested people (most are already gone anyways).

It would also make sense to include nations from there to diversify the units and factions in game. There is a lot of hidden stuff in Empire I didn't know about until a couple months ago. I took out all of the Spanish territories in Europe and flipped back to the Americas and there were new nations like Mexico, Colombia, and rebel territories. I found out you can also change your government type and flag by letting a rebellion take over your capital city. From these finds you could say there would have been a feature where you could abdicate and continue playing as a Republic. We were robbed of so many features that can only be reconciled with the release of Empire 2 with these features and then some added to it.

Frankly I'd LOVE if they included slavery, the post battle screen, family tree, and pretty much everything else from this. Well, except the missions. This should be a sandbox. I don't want a bunch of missions I don't even wanna play getting in the way of that. Other than that this is absolutely amazing.

Missions have never impeded the sandbox feel of tw games. In fact they served to make the game feel like there are people whose will exist beyond your omnipotent control of everything. A council of nobles who wants to see a rival nation knocked down a peg with port blockades or an outright war. The clergy/pope telling you to stop aggressing your Christian brethren. Etc. While sometimes they didn’t have the desired effect (felt like a chore or doing the action made no sense in the current context), feature removal is never the answer when you’ve missed the mark with a useful game mechanic. In any case you were never forced to do said missions, though many came with matching rewards or punishments that incentivized paying attention. Which again fits the theme of, there are other powers that be who want different things from you.

And there's this huge quest battle just sitting there. You WANT to go south and sack Rome, but the game has a huge marker sitting there telling you about all the benefits of doing this random little quest battle against the British. When the game tells you how to play, it does in fact ruin the sandbox mode. I feel quests and missions should be limited to story.

Agreed with the graphics at the time. Even if it was finished and all the bugs filled the game would be way better. They wouldn't even have to do much to change the game except add more diplomacy. Just showing the fact there was more potential to this game just irks me. Online models would have finished it if CA didn't want to. That being said, an example of what not to do would be civilization from 4 to 5.

Europe in Conflict mod added the disease and hospital feature back in but that was ten years ago and I'm not sure how well it worked. The problem with these features is there are likely chunks of code missing or never compiled to enable and integrate them. A completely new Empire 2 would be more practicable. The graphics and everything else about it are clunky compared to newer games anyway.

That's really interesting findings. While I didn't mind the whole "no family tree" thing, which always felt like annoying tedium to me (don't even get me started on Rome 2 with it's dumb politics and family sub-game -.- ), I would have liked more factions and a more detailed map and more ways to interact with other nations. I still regard Empire as one of the best Total War games simply because of what it tried to do and absolutely hope for a follow-up

After playing Romes and Medieval 2 back in the day, and seeing Empires, it was quite a love-hate relationship because there were so many things that could have been great about it. and what you show in this video proves that fact. Napoleon only fixed it to be more playable, but somehow it feels even more limited than Empires. The fact that you show this is very sad because you will never get anything like it again considering the direction that they have been going through with the new series, as well as the gaming industry as a whole with all the DLC and monetization. which was pretty bad in Shogun 2. One of the reasons why I have hesitated playing for so many years is that I don't feel if you don't buy all the DLC. I don't have the full game, and apparently my justification was founded.

Despite its very obvious flaws, for me Empire is the best game of all Total Wars I played. I started with Shogun 2 and thought it was alright, but it was Empire that got me into the series and the one I often come back too. This video just proved what I already had suspicions of. I always had a feeling that family intreagues and sucessions were cut content. They always had that somewhat empty feeling almost like you have a missing puzzle in the middle of picture. As for formable factions, we already have that. I remember Quebec, America, Mexico, Greece (who speak Turkish) and Hungary emerging even without mods, so that wasn't cut content. However most of the central Asia was left out which sucks since this was the age of freaking Nader Shah. However, when I think that it took Total War Attila to make real family tree, with proper governors (which fod Attila they were sopouse to be feudal lords, not governors) and proper politics, it sure wasn't for the laziness or lack of will.

@@AndysTake or maybe Rennesaince with early colonialism. Early Modern Era and Helenic/Helleinstic Age are my favorite tine periods. We did have Helenic/Hellenistic Age in Rome 2, which left me somewhat disspaointed because it was focused too much on Rome which you can rightfully ask what was I expecting in a game called Rome 2. Still, I appriciate the effort very much as they did their homework (except foe Thracians and Dacians, I am still pissed off). As for Early Modern Era, we only had early Rennesaince in Medieval 2 which is a mixed bag considering ghe time it takes and Empire Total War which is my favorite Total War, but not without its downside. Pike and Shot Total War would add perfect link between Medieval 2 and Empire, just like Attila is a perfect link between Rome 2 and Medieval 2.

way too few countries and cities/regions was my biggest issue with empire. It allways made me sad, that a medium sized country such as Denmark, only had 1 region, which contained a small citiy with few build options. The campaign would be so much more interesting if u had to take 3-4 cities in order to capture a medium sized country, instead of just taking 1 city. The same issue is in napoleon total war, way too few cities.

To be fair, Denmark is a tiny country ;) the fact that NORWAY AND SWEDEN only has one city is absolutely ridiculous however. But I do agree, Denmark should’ve had at least two cities, while I believe Norway and Sweden should have at least 3-4 with the current map. It’s insane how many countries only got 1 city, especially France and Spain (?) which is just wild.

Thank you for your insight. Empire is my favourite Total War, that lead me to read about 18th century. Historical battles could have been far better as this period had wars in Europe, Asia and America. In this aspect Seven Years War by Oliver Keppelmüller is more interesting. One of the most intriguing quotations I've ever read from Fontenoy 1745 by Lord Charles Hay: "We are the English Guards, and we hope you will stand till we come up to you, and not swim the Scheldt as you did the Main at Dettingen!". Also in naval aspect I would say Ultimate Admiral Age of Sail surpassed Empire, I am playing the British Campaign and the mechanics and details are better. Empire 2 would be great news for sure, especially if they stick in 18th century, a great military period because of the evolution of weapons, ships, tactics, marching, uniforms.

Don't worry CA will unlock all this cut content in the Remaster when you purchase that. What were the other cut Factions other than Switzerland/Tuscany ? OK the so called time restraints that supposedly caused us the paying fans to miss out on this were self imposed by CA not by the fans, we weren't the ones demanding the game be released ASAP. The fans don't even know what the next game will be until the next CA release trailer and only CA set and know their schedule, they had full control on delaying ETW so they could implement all this content.

Lol. Who would have thought that there were contents cut from Empire? But the game content is so expansive that only a few people would realize this which is actually related on how CA tests their new mechanics for the next game that they would release. And if you spent a little time dabling and modding Empire, you would come to some idea that some features of Napoleon and Shogun can be used to improve it. Some modders made a supply system, others a plague and a few used the graphical enhancement from Napoleon. You can actually port some of the graphics used in Shogun into Empire like the roads, trains and boats, terrain colors or the burning settlement animation in the map.

This video hurt to watch, so much lost potential. Empire is in my top 5 games of all time, after playing 200 hours of vanilla I was introduced to Darth mod. It blew my mind. But imagine what the game could have become with additional mods and fewer cuts.

I may have an unorthodox wishing for a "Empire 2" here... I loved the vast amount of different faction mechanics that the Warhammer titles brought to the game. It would be fun to have something similar, even if not that radically different from each faction in a new game. In the 18th century nations were so different we could do that, from native American to wild tribes in Brazil to traditional warriors of Japan and China. Slavery and naval power of Portuguese and Spanish and later British. Absolutism and Revolution fervour from France... So much potential uniting goog qualities of newer games mechanichs with historical epicness.

This only proves that the game was rushed out, with planned features being chopped out and inadequate testing, so it was also a bag of rusty broken bolts. Europe in Conflict mod actually reactivated the hospital and disease features but from the TWC forum seems to have had mixed results and not updated in 10 years. Empire; a great concept but disappointing reality.

I'm gonna be honest, if CA updated the graphics/sounds, the campaign map, and added in these features and called it empire 2, I would be happy. I would be extremely happy if they used 2 full years to work out bugs, kinks, and improve the ai significantly.

There are thousands cut content in ETW and it is not moddable. Shame CA didnt integrate ETW into NTW which is the game supposed to be as a content-wise

No honestly, different mods implement different things but no mod does it all, and nowhere near to this extent, sadly :/

Great video! The family tree mechanic was a huge miss. I would have liked a fleshed out religion system as well, with national conversions based on the family member religions and government policies (Catholic vs Protestant intra national struggles)
