I’ve tried hitting with top spin for many years including lessons but it didn’t take. Watching your video with the simple top spin motion was key for me hitting with top spot effortlessly. Tomorrow I will be 82 and just wish I had learned the move many years ago. Thanks for the best birthday present ever.

I don't understand why people are criticizing this video. It's a video showing the first steps of adding topspin. It's not a video getting you ready to play the US Open. Of course you can vary the amount of spin, pace height and placement of a ball with greater expertise as you advance. It's important to get the muscle memory moving in another direction before adding the advanced techniques.

I watched this before placement/power videos. Local courts closed, but I have the garage door. Will watch placement and power videos too. I also watched the forehand/backhand lesson you gave Cory(?) in Milwaukee. So strange to have the courts closed with flowers blooming and longer, warmer days, but still fun to see progress learning to hit with my nondominant hand. Thanks so much!

Unless you have REALLY bouncy strings, you are doing something wrong. You may be swinging in the correct pattern, but hitting either too late or at the wrong contact point on the ball, making it shoot upwards rather than creating that nice arc. Make sure you're brushing up the back of the ball and not hitting the bottom, as this will cause it to fly. Also, LeVolVik has a point; topspin forehands work best with a semi-western or more extreme grip. If you are using a continental or eastern grip to hit a topspin forehand, you'll find that the racquet face is too open on contact to create a good amount of topspin, which may cause you to inadvertently drive the ball and hit long.

Yes saw one comment asked about the grip which is so essential [1] ( it should be at LEAST semi-western) in [2] assisting in the "wipe-the-windscreen" with the heel of the hand being the pivot [3] open stance or closed stance. Kirby is closed stance yet most of the players strike the ball open stance.[4[ the face of the racquet finishes facing outwards . It's is a good start video and players could use a green-dot or even and orange-dot ball to get things going from service line ensuring all the balls fall in the service court

My other thought, he gives you permission to start slowly at the net until you have a feel. I come from 14 years of ice hockey and I have competing muscles that interfere with my forehand. Hitting it "correctly" doesn't feel right to my arm. Too many wrist shots in hockey I guess. ha

I played some last year. But I learned the old school way back in the 70s. I really like the idea of adding topspin to my shots, but because I learned the old way, I was not terribly successful. My biggest concern is to develop hand-eye coordination doing it this way. The drills seem straightforward enough.

Many of you criticizing this video have to remember, this progression of "exaggerated" topspin is for people who haven't been able to hit consistent topspin in the past. Many of my students are older and have a classic/linear style forehand who either hit flat or slice and can't break the habit. This drill helps students FEEL what generating topspin is like. Particularly on putting away short balls, getting them to hit more vertically helps them keep the ball in the court.

I am an intermediate player and not played for the last 20years so I was getting back into it recently and going well but then I had carpal tunnel surgery after coming back my forehand has been so bad its like I am a beginner again, anyway today I practiced against the wall and I found out the problem I was holding the racket way down near the base like Kirby was holding it I moved my grip up to just below centre and all my shots were back as it had changed the balance of the racquet. The reason for mentioning this is I have not seen many videos where they tell you how far up and down you are supposed to hold the racquet but I do hold the racquet further down like where Kirby is holding it when I serve and my serve is great

Hi Coach - good video. My background is in baseball/softball. One thing missing from instructional vids on all three sports is the importance of what we call hip/shoulder rotation when taking a swing. The hitter must do more than just strike the ball using hand/arm strength. He/she must rotate the hip/shoulder into the swing. By putting this type of leverage into the swing you hit the ball with greater authority and can direct it more readily. Perhaps you have addressed that in a subsequent vid and in your lessons to your students. I noticed that Kirby struck the ball at the hip level when she was at the service line and at the chest level when she was at the baseline. Please address this in one of your vids if you haven't done so already. Look forward to viewing more of your vids.
@Sa1d1n
@Sa1d1n 3 жыл бұрын
Hip/Shoulder rotation is part of ALL forehand swings, including a flat hit. The height where you strike the ball in tennis is always variable. When she was at the baseline, she was getting a live feed, which tends to bounce more than if you drop feed for yourself. Learning how to set up for and hit balls at different heights is also a different lesson. You never want to get into a habit of hitting at the same height, since you always want to be taking the ball at, or before, the top of the bounce.

It looks like an Eastern grip to me when she is actually hitting the ball. The beginning is a continental grip just to get a feel for the topspin. You'd never use a continental grip for topspin during an actual stroke as it's so hard to create topspin with it.

I play mid intermediate tennis/3.5 and see a lot of guys play effectively just hitting the ball flat; especially if you are hitting early in the rise. Topspin is a great weapon though. Sometimes we go play with some 4.5 players and the level of topspin they use is drastic. My 4.5 friend told me to focus on the exact type of drill shown here. I coach tell me to focus on drive. I was hitting up on the ball from trying to hit topspin. Definitely find a good coach and have them show you good technique. I had to completely break down my swing in order to find some topspin but worth it.

I am hitting the back fence with this move. I am absolutely incapable of hitting a top spin. BUT I am a good amateur player and played all my life "Monica Niculescu style". That is hitting the forehand all the time with heavy BACK spin. Note: Monica was a child when I started (as an adult) to play like her. She is 11 years younger than me. Maybe she saw me on the court when she was a child? :) I am Romanian, like her.

nice progressions...i aways make it clear that theres a horizontal line and a vertical line...u have to marry the two for whatever situation your faced with...always arc the ball...of late up untill recently nadals heavy topspin has not been combined with his compression of the ball and therefore hasnt had as much pop..and by his standards dropping short...when he marrys the two then the ball explodes off the court .... this video is showing us how to create topspin..hes not saying you cant drive through the ball aswell just that once you have topspin you have many more options i guess..

Personally, topspin has been where I've gotten stuck. I focused on it so much in the beginning and now that I play people with faster balls I always frame it or hit inconsistently because I'm focusing too much on hitting up on the ball rather than hitting through. I'm not 100% sure but I think that just by hitting through, your arm will naturally go upwards towards the end of the swing. So, when hitting against faster incoming balls, you should be able to just swing through and make contact with the ball in front of your body so that the ball catches your swing on the rise. Thus, top spin is created. Am I on the right track with this?

I think she received and offer to work with Wilson to help release The Clash models and left. She got off her social media too, seems to be managed by a third party. For me the thing that was weird is that they never release a goodbye video for her or Ira. At least Ira came back for the quarantine spoof. I hope there's no bad blood with her and Ian.

Ian, what about wrist pronation. Federer and Djokovic and Nadal seem to be making use of wrist pronation. I have tried this myself and spin goes way up, with a few more frames, but not a lot

This is old information. Today's modern player hits hard and with lots of topspin especially with the newer rackets/strings. I wouldn't focus too much on this video and look into learning to hit the heavy ball. That is where pronation and lag really come into play and will give you a good forehand.

I used to play tennis when I was really young about 6. I played for a while and I was really good then I stopped. I'm 14 and I hope to become pro is it possible? I've never played any tournament but any opportunity I have I'm outside playing tennis at home.

emil pirozzi yes! you can be whatever you like if you want it enough. just keep at it and when it gets hard keep going and dont do anything for anyone but yourself. if I could tell myself at a younger age anything I would tell myself to not listen to my mothers critisism after games. it made me scared to lose knowing I would have to cop harsh critisism. it made tennis for me a chore almost and it took 5 years for me to get back into it after i quit. just do it for you and only you. if you want it enough you will be great :) age doesnt make a difference if you work hard.

too late for who? you don't have to be number #1 in the world to enjoy tennis and make a career out of it. you do what YOU want and don't listen to those who say you cannot do such things. tennis is a game you can start from any age and still become relatively good. plus it's good fitness, it helps develop hand-eye coordination, and it's a WHOLE lot of fun. do what you want!

Well explained. But I feel that topspin should be done only on certain occasions...Pace is good to throw your opponent into forced errors. Topspin gives too much time for your opponent to react. Topspin is good if you are hitting angled shots so it clears the net and stays in court but still forces your opponent to the corners.
@badboy0510

Ramy G topspin is good for being able to get back into ralleys from tough shots. if you can hit clean consitent topspin shots you use it to stay in points as it clears the net by such a large margin. using the topspin deep into the court can often times drive players to drop the ball short, where you can attack as you said with the big flat forehand swing. id say if you arent confident on it then yeah you might only use it on occasion but seasoned players use it quite extensively

Hey so i was wondering what the most common reasons for hitting the frame of the racquet is. My serve is fine, my volleys are fine too, and my backhand is very good but i constantly (i mean 1 or 2 out of 3 hits) hit the frame.

Could be a vision thing, could be a swing path thing....one detail that I'd be money on: you're very likely hitting the SAME place on your frame over and over again. Whenever there's a pattern of shanking a specific stroke for a player it almost always means they're misjudging the ball the same way repeatedly. The big key for you is to identify where you're hitting instead of the middle, and then adjust. Trick yourself at first by aiming for the opposite side of the racquet face. More than likely you'll hit dead in the center of the strings.

+Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players Okay, i didnt think it was a vision thing as it's only my forehand, not my other strokes. Now that you mention it though, it is usually the lower part of my frame that i hit, resulting in an almost straight up path for the ball.
@DeceitfulDestiny

One thing I would consider is jerky acceleration. If you're driving the racquet upwards while it's still being set/too early before the drop then it'll move out of position for the strike zone. Smooth out your stroke a bit and see if that was a factor.
