Thanks to mass advertising from certain publishers, we're led to believe that only a few gaming franchises are majorly successful, when anything could be further from the truth.
So this episode Guru Larry takes a look at five much lesser known, but still incredibly successful franchises that you might be surprised at how big they actually are.

My favorite memory from Lineage 2 is a great, great bug. The game had "jiggle physics" which were literally just a set of boobs rendered as a separate model to the character model. So once, I'm running along, my character gets stuck on a rock, she stops moving but her boobs just keep on running, wobbling off into the sunset. I couldn't stop laughing for a good half hour.

I'm in Britain, too. I've heard of Oregon Trail, but I only thought it was one game where you died of dysentery a lot from a long time ago, since all the graphics I've ever seen are on the meme of what is probably the original game. I didn't realise it was a long running series or even that it was used for education.

I think Oregon Trail(Trail was one of three suggestions my phone gave me after Oregon) has been played by every American from the 80's to present. I was amazed by the graphics in the later versions, I played it on a Apple II with one of the monitors that only displayed green and black.

I was expecting to see the Touhou Project on here because it's the most prolific indie game franchise in the world, but the only people who have heard of it in the US are extreme bullethell enthusiasts or (after one of its themes was used as a backing track in a couple meme) a small subset of music nerds and know-your-memers. Being from the US and in school well after it's peak of popularity had passed, I never played oregon trail personally, but EVERYONE knew it by reputation: "YOU HAVE DIED OF DYSENTERY" didn't need the internet to go viral.

Larry, great stuff, as always. I want to say, showing the "sales sandwich" (sold more than, sold less than) is a pro move, all the way. A rookie would have said, for example, only that Oregon Trail sold 65.5 million. We would be left to ponder the large number and simply accept it is impressive, having nothing much to compare it to. But, as I said, you are a pro. Thats why your channel is so popular. Heres hoping more and more people discover you.

Good list, but i am slightly disappointed about the lack of Hugo the Troll, who might as well be the most obscure platforming franchise. Hugo was born from a danish TV show which was adapted into a very tricky minigame series, since then, it has spawned at least 5 PSX titles, a racing spinoff, a battleship spinoff, dozens of edutainment games, a reboot where Hugo is a secret agent for PS2 that had like 3 games, and just recently another reboot that makes series a more honest platformer. Also a movie is coming out of it, titled "Hugo - The World's Worst Comeback". The franchise is pretty well known in Scandinavia but very forgotten everywhere else, despite having a rather wide and varied library.
@TangoBunnie
@TangoBunnie 7 жыл бұрын
I'm fairly sure Larry knows of Hugo too, it was a feature on UK Saturday morning TV shows for a couple of years as a phone-in game. They changed the witch from having normal skin tone to a green skin tone for the UK version for some reason! I think we only got a few of the games in the UK, whereas the rest of Europe got tons of them.

I recently stumbled on your channel and I've been enjoying it immensely. Now I finally have something to comment about! As an American I can give you a few reasons that Oregon Trail does so well. As a kid it was one of the most frustrating games to play according to those that played it at school (as I was raised in a cult I didn't play it until I was an adult). As an adult there's the nostalgia factor at work for those who played it. As, basically, an outsider to it it's not only frustrating but also bizarrely addictive. Everyone dies of dysentery. Repeatedly. I only played it after a boss who insisted I actually play it, instead of you know work, on the clock got me the handheld version a couple of years back (yes she was a cool boss and yes she basically paid me to play a video game for three weeks straight until I actually beat it instead of answering emails and other correspondence like I was hired to do).

As a kid that played it in school, I think a big part of the popularity comes from the fact that Oregon Trail is truly a game and it was fun, versus the other educational software we were exposed to that was generally not very entertaining and felt like schoolwork. Playing a video game at school was something that did not happen since taking a Game Boy to school was asking to have it stolen, or taken by a teacher and only returned to your parents. Discovering and being allowed to play a fun game AT SCHOOL was mind blowing for a lot of kids, so I think it was a major highlight of many people's experience in mid 80s-90s American public school.

Teen titans go did an episode where robin forced them to do a parody of the Oregon trail game. It was more of a skit-based review (a la bad nostalgia critic) than anything. Frankly the show can be decent when it's doing parody stuff, that's what the writers are good at. It just fails when they try to be meta, or when they acknowledge they're a DC show.

@@dstarr3 Also, the post-SotN games don't sell at all, and even SotN itself sold only a hair better than the original on NES. The original Metroid sold more than both of them put together, although Metroidvanias in general aren't too well liked.

When I was a kid in Indiana, we always had Oregon Trail to play in school. If anybody was near the end of the game, the entire classroom would gather around the computer to watch. Meanwhile later on, I moved to Oregon. When we started passing things like The Dalles, I was shocked. I thought the game ended when you reached Oregon! Imagine my surprise when it turned out that the last several parts of the game were past the state line and your real goal was the Willamette Valley, far to the west of the state (the actual end is in a place called Oregon City). The game never told us this. So much for an educational game!

The Oregon trail was when the States and Canada were not sure where the line was, and Oregon was just open to gold seekers and settlers from both sides. The game took place right around the time bounderies had just been drawn (and still before statehood), and the trail existed before what we know as "Oregon" today was formed.

Lineage was huge here in Argentina in the early 2000's, in the era of cyber cafés (though they were more of cyber drugstores here). With our weak currency and economy, paying for wow was out of the question. Plus the more serious aesthetics when compared to wow attracted many teenagers.

I'm sure the only reason the Imagine series sold well is family buying the game for their kids. I was the kind of kid playing Pokemon, Sonic, and Parasite Eve, but around the holidays after the DS came out my aunts, uncles, or anyone outside of my immediate family would always buy me Imagine games. all they knew was I was a girl who played games and figured "I gotta get her a game about raising children, Imagine Babysitter it is!" they were also getting games for my sister, who never played games. she ended up getting that party babies one. she often forced me to play with her.
@XenoParadox

same here I was one of those kids back in 2012-2013 where all I would was sit on booty all day and play Pokemon Black version and White, becuase Pokemon was the stuff back in those times. The Imagine series just aims for teenage girls (no offence), but why would your aunt and your uncle wanna teach you babysitting? (Just trying to ask a question) I know my parents wouldn't wanna get me games like the Imagine games on DS, and besides, I'm 12-years old, I SUCK AT BABYSITTING
@CorvodaPop

Idk. I was about 13 when the ds first came out, and aside from direct family (mom dad and sis) nobody knew what kind of games i played aside from pokemon. they just knew i liked video games. I'm sure they saw a ds game about babysitting cute babies and grabbed it for me. That same year I got all 3 Gen4 pokemon games from my parents, so my other family members probably had no idea what to get me. Aside from Imagine they also got me Nintendogs and Cooking Mama, which were both great.

The school I went to, initially had the Apple II version on flippy disks and there was one copy for every classroom. So if you want to get pedantic about it, most schools had a license for at least one copy, if not a dozen for every school. Of course that never stopped anyone from just running the game and doing a sneakernet to swap the disk around if the machines were all in the same room. As far as piracy though, many people pirated the Apple II version and played them on emulators because of nostalgia. As computers improved many schools switched to "The SuperSolvers" series (Midnight Rescue, Outnumbered, and so forth) which were much easier to for kids to pirate off the machines at school since they were installed to the hard drive, and the "exit to dos" was often not passworded, or passworded as "DOS".

I did play a lot of Oregon Trail at school as a kid because it was pretty much the only game installed that you could play. I did have a home pc that came bundled with a later updated version that I introduced to my own children and they loved it. There’s even a card game now and we play it a lot too. It’s just as brutal as the real game.

The original Petz games, released for PC prior to Ubisoft's purchase of the series from The Learning Company, were very well made 2D virtual pet games with a still very active fan community and countless mods. Ubisoft released one good Petz game based on the engine of the previous two, and then promptly dropped the original series in lieu of a bunch of shovelware.

You know Larry I just had an idea for a fact hunt episode; I've been playing a ton of Doom 2016 throughout the entire year and it made me wonder, considering the amount of hate it got pre-release, if there are any more really successful breakout hits despite what they had to contend with. We always hear about the really big and popular stuff that are disappointing flops but we rarely hear about the really pleasant gaming surprises. I bet there are plenty throughout the decades that fit the criteria :)
