Massive Ice Calving at Aialik Glacier - Alaska May 2022

The Aialik Glacier is a glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. About 15 miles from Seward, it is the largest glacier in Aialik Bay and drains the Harding Icefield. The Harding Icefield, the largest icefield contained entirely within the United States, is over 1,100 square miles and spawns some 40 glaciers. Aialik glacier is generally very stable and such massive calving events are rare. Most calving of the Aialik glacier occurs in May and June.

It's a totally normal process - actually the end result of climate change will be that eventually many of these glaciers will no longer have the weight to continue moving, stop calving, and at that point they will become "snowfields" instead of "glaciers"

Agreed - the boat that was there before us was probably twice as close. I think she was concerned because of the reports of the glacier calving a lot that day so she decided to keep us a bit farther back. There are videos of people being injured by ice thrown from calving glaciers or vessels nearly sunk from the resulting waves!

Glacial calving is a sign of a healthy glacier ! The ice flows downhill because of the weight of the snow and ice on the top of the glacier, a natural process that has been occuring for millions of years. As the face of the glacier is pushed over open water, calving occurs! So celebrate! This video is a sign that the Aialik glacier is still alive and well for the time being. If calving stops occuring, that is actually a very bad sign for the glacier, as it likely indicates it's stopped moving and has become a snowfield, at which point it will begin to melt back from the water's edge. That having been said, Aialak glacier IS retreating (which means more melts than it receives new snowfall each year on average) and climate change is certainly a likely factor. So my advice would be - enjoy this show of nature's might with joy and admiration, but don't forget the climate crisis melting the ice away in under-ice rivers underneath, hidden from our gaze.

A glacier actually can't flip because most of it is on land (the part breaking off is where it's pushed over open water). Icebergs "calve" off of glaciers, and then those icebergs can and do flip as you described (as they melt!)

Well, you could look at it two ways. Glacial calving has been occuring since the earth had ice - a healthy glacier "flows" downhill, pushed by the weight of new snowfall. This is a waterfront glacier - so irregardless of global temperature, as long as the glacier has not melted so much that it stops moving downhill and becomes a snowfield instead of a glacier (which would be grim indeed), then it will always calve as it is pushed over open water that, unlike land, cannot support the weight of all that ice. Calving is a sign that the glacier is still healthy and flowing downhill, so it's kind of a good thing and an incredible sight at that! On the other hand - this glacier is "retreating" which means that it is not getting as much new snowfall each year as it is calving off, which is obviously bad (and likely due to climate change). Either way, nature is awe inspiring in its glory and I think it would be follish to be so lost in thought over what is being lost so as to not enjoy the magnificent, millions of years old show is occuring before you, that you may never see again. These people are simply enjoying the outdoors and a spectacular display of mother nature's might, no need to be offended at the enjoyment or expense of others :) Please come up to Alaska and appreciate all the magnicence of the natural world that Alaska has to offer you! - perhaps you will find yourself silent in awe, or perhaps - you'll even catch yourself cheering in excitement a time or two!

Imagine being priveledged to get to go on a boat to see a spectacular natural process that's been occurring for millions of years, but seeing anything at all is not guranteed. It's expensive - but worth it for the chance. After spending 6 hours on the boat, you get to witness what you spent the whole day cold, outside, eyes glued to a wall of ice, hoping to see - and it's massive and incredible and awe inspiring! You might find yourself more exstatic then a pessamistic online commenter in those shoes ;)

It's important to understand the processes behind and effects of anthropogenic climate change and to fight for the chance for our children and grandchildren to get to see sights like these. But glacial calving in and of itsself isn't a negative thing, and it's an incredible sight to see! You should come up and see Alaska. The natural world has a lot of incredible sights to offer, and you might find it both makes you more optomistic but also further inspires your passion for the protection of our planet with all its sights and experiences at the same time :)

So actually, the result of global warming will be that calving will stop as the glacier melts to the point that it no longer flows downhill. There's no problem! Calving occurs year round (even when tourist boats aren't able to run) and on glaciers like this one, almost daily - it's caused by the weight of all that snow and ice pushing the glacier downhill, causing it to "flow" until it's over water. Since water cannot support the weight of all that snow and ice, calving occurs! Ailiak is a relatively fast moving glacier, so it's pretty active calving-wise despite being relatively stable.

The Earth is facing a “triple planetary crisis,” warn UN officials. Climate disruption, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste are the main areas of concern regarding the current state of the environment. This year, the Earth Day’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet,” so what would humanity's best investment for the planet be? We need to start by cleaning up the planet. There is no place on Earth where the air and water are clean, and that's a real problem. In theory, tackling this issue should be our priority when it comes to taking action to improve the dismal state of our planet. But let’s not fool ourselves. Such a plan alone will solve nothing. It will only help the international organizations to justify their own existence. They tick off "done" to raise as much money as they want, and that's it. If we do not improve relations between us, we will not be able to achieve the great and ambitious improvement in nature that we want and need to attain globally. We will never achieve a good result through bureaucratic, mechanical measures. There are a lot of people sitting in their comfortable offices profiting from the environmental crisis and demanding money and respect. They keep flying from one end of the world to the other on all kinds of missions to make a lot of noise with what they are "doing" and which everyone "needs to hear" as if that alone means something is happening, but in practice we see no real progress. The Earth must also be cleansed of them, of these people who engage in useless campaigns that only cause harm because they mislead the world, leading it away from the real solution. The cleaning of the planet should start inside out. If we do not clean the planet from within, and continue with our reckless behavior and the selfish nature of our hearts as before, nothing will change for the better. The immense sums invested in environmental initiatives should be directed to spreading an educational process aimed at improving the way we relate to each other. Humans are the most developed and influential factors of all of nature's levels: still, vegetative, animate and human. Since we occupy the highest level in nature, positively affecting the environment, the climate, and nature in general can be achieved by reaching positive relations among us. On the contrary, by letting our divisive drives tear apart human relations, we also destroy our surrounding environment, the very nature that our lives depend on. The more we humans are able to correct ourselves by changing our divisive attitudes toward each other into positive attitudes of mutual support, encouragement, mutual responsibility, and reciprocal concern, the more we will receive positive feedback from nature. And the more we develop without making this necessary correction, the more negative feedback we will receive from nature, as we have experienced in the form of natural disasters, pandemics. It is of utmost importance for us to organize our thoughts, desires and qualities so that we understand that saving the environment and a shift to a better future depend solely on changing our attitudes to each other: from antagonistic egoism to positive, compassionate and cooperative relationships.
