Massive nest of 5,000 yellow jackets wasps attack while being destroyed

This is one of the largest yellow jacket nests I've seen in my 16 years. The main part of the nest measured 20 inches across plus an additional egg chamber inside the pump house that could not be measured.
I suspect that these yellow jackets over-wintered given the nest size. They were located in a pump house which remains heated during the winter. I have witnessed 3 times where they have managed to make it through a winter in Ohio so it's possible if conditions are just right.
I managed to only get stung once during the removal. They were extra aggressive because opening the pump house ripped open the top of the nest.

I feel like you'd have some warning. I mean a nest that size has to have a lot of traffic to and from and activity around it.

@@ian5066 their entrance was down in the weeds out of the way. The homeowner didn't know they were there and got attacked when he opened the pump house

You are a brave man, I was out walking yesterday and randomly was covered in yellow jackets suddenly, didn't see them coming at all. Got 12 stings, was not fun. Whatever you charge, it should be more haha.

I use Carhartt B01 double front pants. They're canvas pants and the double front protects the most vulnerable areas (knees). I get stung once in a blue moon through them but not often

The liquid poison he uses keeps them from building in that particular spot again.

Man that was a huge nest. That could really been dangerous for somebody walking by there they could really been attacked by a nest that size.

Idk what’s in that spray bottle but I would have had that whole cellar or space flooded with it. This guy just used two squeezes like it’s a fabreeze bottle and go in like a true warrior.
