Or bin it to avoid that job? or spend hours cleaning summat your going to get rid of?? I never know where best to put my time, .......? xx

LouAnn, on God's word, your pantry was not even close to embarrassing. The fact you have so many activities going on, hosting, I would have thought there would be WAY MORE wasted food and way more chaos. You really are quite organized, far ahead of most of us! So gracious to let us see the really fun before/after! May some of us release old guilt-inducing items and food to make room for calm and organization thanks to this video.

Once I started hosting the whole family on holidays, I used crock pots. Each side would go into a crock pot. One each for mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and even carve the turkey and keep warm in a crock pot. Then when guests arrived I could visit with them as cooking and clean up was done.

At age 60 I started to downsize and declutter, I figured if I didn't start now I might not have the ability in 10 years. Long story short I'm 72 now and I live by the: "If I don't wear it, use it, or touch it once in 365 days It's outta here." The system works because everything in my house has to be cleaned once a year in order to stay, so even the highest shelf gets emptied, dusted, decluttered, and then reloaded. So far so good, my system is working for me. Oh yeah, I also do the one in, one out rule that way I'm not accumulating stuff.

I did an overhaul of my mum’s pantry last week too and the oldest prize award went to chocolate flavourings that she had from 1987. I have been trying to help her let go of those for years now, and I can confidently say that she finally said it was time. I’ve been amazed at the emotional journey it has been for her to get old things out of the house. It’s not just “stuff”, it’s memories, emotions sometimes a connection to a point in time that was hard or happy etc. there’s a lot of healing to be had when letting go of old things. And some of the things don’t even seem to make sense, but they’re still hard to let go of.

"It's okay, it hasn't been your number one priority." Those were the most empowering words you said at the end of your video. It validates why it's difficult to keep things organized and under control when we are managing many other things- work, school, children, helping parents, illness, unexpected emergencies, children's sports and recreation activities, holidays, birthdays, projects, plus just the day to day daily housework/ routines/ grocery shopping... the list goes on and on. Hearing those words stopped me, and I had to replay that. Thank you, Dawn (and Mom) for helping us see that it's okay and the path we need to take to make things better!!!!

Thank you, LouAnn, for being vulnerable and letting us see this process! I just completed our walk-in pantry declutter and it was absolutely crazy how much stuff I had in there that I got rid of - 43 full canning jars of old food we were never going to eat and just kept keeping, my husband’s grandma’s china, wedding gifts of fancy bowls and platters, and assorted party dishes that were passed down to me among dozens of misc. stuff. It’s a huge transformation and now has lots of empty space that I intend to keep empty.

Mom, you raised some great kids and always made sure your kids/family were well provided for! The pantry was always important for avoiding not having enough to feed your family especially if items were on sale. Nowadays things are so much more available but our generation has a hard time changing the way we shopped as younger parents. So do not be embarrassed, just be jubilant that your children love you so much. I don't have any children but a few of my organizing friends did such a job on my place that I'm not the messy person that I thought I was! God bless you all!

@@helenebennie3961 Good for you! I’m so proud of you even if I don’t know you!! I did the same when I turned 40. I had been in banking and banks were swallowing each other up at a quick clip at that time - and the major bank I worked for was bought by a Chinese banking firm who moved my job to another city an hour and a half away. Because I technically lost my job to an overseas company, it entitled me to a certain amount of money from the government to retrain for something different. It was, coincidentally, the exact amount of tuition (at the time) at my local community college, which meant I only had to pay for books, uniforms, supplies, lab fees, etc. It covered about 70% of my costs to get an Associates degree in a health related program. And my fellow students were wonderful and couldn’t have cared less about the fact I was close to the age of their moms. I highly encourage anyone thinking about it to jump right in like you did!

It is soooo easy for the pantry to get out of control! I just recently had to declutter mine. I love that you got to grow up in the same house. That’s unheard of these days! My kids have had the same blessing. My husband and I have been married for 40 years and we’ve lived in this home for 37 years! Both kids came home from the hospital after being born and have only lived here. In fact, my daughter wanted to get married here as well and did so 6 years ago! It was a very small wedding but that’s what she wanted. We’ve thought about downsizing, but I think it would break everyone’s heart! You did a great job for your mom. Such a good daughter!

It was really good to see the decluttering tools used on a REAL project. Thanks for sharing!

I love that you even painted for your Mom to surprise her, that is the sweetest. It looks wonderful in there and it will be so much easier to keep up with.

No judgement. I did want to see her reaction to the painting and the full transformation!

Thanks to your mom for letting us see a real life pantry transformation! I’m amazed and inspired by how much she could let go of... it was great to see the momentum pick up so quickly. Great job all around 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Did some of the expired foodstuff end up in a compost pile? if so, then it's still being 'used', just in a different form.

A normal pantry!!! Thank you to your mom for letting us see this video. It's so nice to see a "normal" pantry that isn't pinterest perfect all the time. I try to give mine an overhaul once every few months but it usually gets done once every 6 months when it's hard to see the floor. Normal busy life with 2 young kids!
