Wow! Your headline is wrong - you are not restoring an old boat - you are building a new one! 😍well done!
@robertcochran71033 жыл бұрын
This is a beautiful video! Your boat is being wonderfully re-built. This is the first time I have seen the use of "tree nails", and I am most impressed that you are using them. They work like very large dowels -- or perhaps do even more than dowels do. I am glad that you hired Brunna to re-design the interior. That is an extremely good idea! The sponsorship program is an excellent idea too, and I hope that it worked out well for you. I am so impressed with your crew of shipwrights, and with Ben and MP. You are all putting in so much hard work and toil on the refitting of Yabá. I think Brunna sees a lot of professional opportunity for herself also. I think what you are doing is exactly right if you want to live aboard a boat: you need the refit to make Yabá sound and seaworthy, and both you and MP meed a precise knowledge of exactly how the ship was rebuilt. This knowledge will serve you both very well.

So many still waffling on about how much cheaper it would be to buy a sounder boat. But where would the excitement be in that good on them for having a sense of adventure and having the foresight to video it for us all to see and help towards the cost. It’s the very same people who are moaning who are watching it on KZbin the irony is so amusing.

Astoundingly poor. They are good at getting the job done, but the quality is apprentice at best. Not journeymen nor master. From the looks of the background, that yard services a very ruff and tumble fishing fleet, which by it’s nature is a” patch it quick and get back to work “kind of deal. Personally, I never seen gaps between futtocks . The whole thing depends on the bolts not working and failing.
@lawrenceburchett74113 жыл бұрын
Well , the framing is coming along , Trunnels are certainly one way to do it very old-timey we used to cut a slot in the end of the trunnel then drive a wedge into it locking it in there. Futtocking is the way you frame vessels like this and its not overly hard , but labor-intensive. I see many things I would do differently, but they will do it the way they are comfortable, I however do take exception to them not bedding the futtocks with something. Nice to see her coming together. After framing and planking, it will be interesting to see how they attack the sheer plank and sheer clamp. I will bet there is a lot of rot in those deck beam ends. It is becoming obvious even to landlubbers like me most of the decking and super structure will be replaced along with all electrical, plumbing, mechanical on and on. I am sure the boat will be finished one day and they will enjoy it for a few years then pass it on at a big loss to be used as a work boat again. I would love to know how all this is being financed. Gosh I can't stop thinking about this project. I am 64 years old and have started and completed many Project Boats in my lifetime. In every project boat I chose to undertake I considered four things. 1. Is the vessel seaworthy enough that I can go sailing in the vessel during the project. 2. Does the vessel have a working reliable engine. The engine is not a project killer but costs must be considered to replace or repair the engine to a reliable condition. 3. Do I have enough expendable cash $$$ to take on the project. 4. Do I have enough free time in my working life to dedicate to the project. I watch KZbin videos over TV and most have to do with sailing DIY project boats. One thing I wish someone would answer for me?? How do these young sailors make enough money to support themselves, boats and their sailing adventures??? I see no obvious signs that they have jobs other than KZbin. Yaba is and will continue to be a fantastic money pit. Where the heck does the money come from??
@pez60563 жыл бұрын
Like so many millennials they expect others to throw money at them so they can realize their dreams. Coming from an earlier era I can't even imagine asking others to pay for something I want to do. It would seem that the idea of working to fund your ambitions is an out-dated concept, all you need to do these days is grab a camera, post some KZbin videos and ask complete strangers to pay for your lifestyle. I completely get why they decided to buy a "project boat", as getting folks to donate cash to buy a decent boat would be a more difficult proposition. If these two folks, as lovely as they seem, had the slightest clue about what they are doing I may have a different take on the situation, but they have no knowledge of anything to do with blue water sailing, or any kind of sailing for that matter, they chose a completely unsuitable boat, they show zero interest in learning any skills they will need to survive ocean sailing...even seeing a video of them starting to learn the "ropes" in a sailing dinghy would inspire at least a little confidence that they may have a chance of success, but poor ol' Ben still doesn't even know the difference between bolts and screws. Unless they are actually simply planning to have a nice comfortable floating home built for them at other's expense and never venture out of sight of land, I fear that people donating to this project, well intentioned as they may be, are just helping Ben & MP towards tragedy.

You guys certainly compared the cost of this gigantic makeover with the ones of a brand new schooner. Can you give us an idea of prices difference? Good luck!

I looked into it and it varies. seems a good price for one at 70' would be somewhere in the $400,000 US territory but rebuilding one could cost a million depending on your desired end all.

@@MitchellEdwards222 Probably the labour costs are very, very lower than in US or in Italy, for instance. And the wood too should cost less, at least because of the delivery costs that, obviously, should be lower. So I don't think that the will spend such an amount of money to rebuild, when a good 70" shooner should cost 400K. It has any sense. Nobody throw money in the WC.

In the Baltic you can get 70' Wooden Hulls for far less Kfk run for around 15.000 to 25.000 for non sailing Motor Fishing Boats if converted to Sailing they go for around 60.000 to 120.000. For masts and Sails depending on Size 15.000 to 30.000. i dont recomand using US prices as Standard for anything since the main goal is to ripp each other off as much as Possible so everything will be highly over prized.

Would not of been alot cheaper and better to sell that as it was and buy another boat this is a very expensive rebuild
@mwatkins24643 жыл бұрын
@@marksockett6657 labor is only about $18.00 a day for each worker so labor price should be very low where they are.
