I’ve been reading about a part of wooden boats called a “ Worm Shoe “ a piece of sacrificial wood that goes below the keel. A piece that the teredo worms will attack before they get to the keel itself. The shoe is replaced whenever you lift the boat for service and the worms 🪱 will never get Yaba again. Cheers 🍻

It's really good to see that traditional boatbuilding skills are alive and kicking - there aren't many parts of the world where you can do this kind of project without Bill Gates' credit card. Like grandfather's axe, keep replacing the handle and head and Yabá will last forever, which is a good thing. It's also really thrilling to see how to build a new boat without having to pay a naval architect to design it. I bet the carbon footprint is a small fraction of a new fibreglass build too. Will Black Dog be signed on as permanent crew?

I have said as much before but it really amazes me how much damage the water has done in such a short period of time since Yaba was built, do you have any idea why/how so much water was able to penetrate the wood? I'm just curious if it was bad craftsmanship or neglect from the previous owners. I'm glad the old girl is getting fixed right this time. On a side note, I'm loving the real time summery on Patreon,I would encourage anyone who is not a Patreon to become one, for a few dollars a month it's well worth all the new updated information Ben and MP post every week and believe me, the up to date progress is pretty amazing.

Those boats are not built to last 100 years, they are short term boats. Compare the construction techniques from Arabella and Tally Ho and differences emerge. No sealing of end grain, wood on wood with no tar, dolphinite or other water repellent, nails in place of copper rivets, stainless steel in place of bronze, etc, etc. Add in neglect that his boat obviously had and the issue is compounded.

@@NotOnYourLife It's pretty sad to be honest, I love the style/design of Yaba and I can completely understand why they fell in love with her and want to bring her back to life. It's so interesting to see traditional boat building as practiced by people who do it for a living. AFAIK, these guys build and repair fishing ships, so thier standards are elsewhere.

Well, at the end of the work, I suppose that maybe only the masts will remain the same. All the planks, from the bow to the stern, most of the frames, most of the upper deck, the transom, and then the internal bulkheads, the bottom boards, all the internals, all the systems (hydraulic, electrical, the bilges, engine casing, navigation, the engine itself...these are those I can enumarate...). Substantially a brand new boat. 70" with a lot of internal space to accomodate all the needs to live sailing wit all the conforts. And safely (5 cm of thickness for the planks, 12 or more for the frames!!!). But... how much will all these works cost? I cannot believe you decided to rebuild totally a 70" schooner with limited capabilities to sail in the high seas, instead of buying a steel/aluminium smaller keel. But that's it. And I'm looking forward on watching your cruises!

@@rallyeraidr7841 the good thing about it is is they're providing a lot of work for a lot of people. I counted as many as 10 people in one shot working on the boat at one time. Where the hell does 25 year olds get the money to pay 10 people to work on anything. I guess the kid has a very rich Daddy. I also heard they paid $40,000 for this boat!!! They made somebody's day or year! They should have been paid five grand to haul it away. To rebuild, or should I say to have built this is the United States would cost 4 to $500,000, although they're providing lots of work for a lot of people it just goes to show the disparity between the rich and poor in Brazil it's far worse there than it is here the poor in Brazil are very poor the rich on the other hand are very rich. We could have bought a boat in far better shape actually any boat that floats would have been in far better shape this boat did not even float, in fact there are numerous wooden schooners for sale right now on yacht world for about what they paid for this boat originally and these boats were built in the last 20 years with zero rot. If it is an obvious, I'll tell you this real bothers me.lol I want to know who's putting the bill for this project, how much they're getting paid, did they really pay $40,000 for this pile of rotted wood, did they ever consider looking at other boats, and most of all why did they not get her surveyor or someone with some boat knowledge to guide them. This is a perfect example of how money makes up for everything else that is lacking. The fact is rich people do this all the time. The yacht business is nothing but a business living off of the rich. There isn't and hasn't been a yacht built that lost money the moment after it was finished. Boats that sell for a million dollars are often sold for a half that just a year or two later clearly rich people have a lot of money to throw around I guess everyone else should be happy for that. I think everyone else would be a lot happier if they were paid better for their work. In so many manual hours and so much labor would not be wasted. Things produced would reflect their real value, not in this world.

@@dannydonnelly8345 I heard a similar sale price. I am told they did NOT get a survey - and lets face it, any surveyor would have told them to run like hell.
