My favorite treasure hunt is with my grandson, 6 at the time. He found my metal detector. “What’s this?” I showed him how it works. “Let’s hunt for pirate treasure Papaw.” I made us pirate hats out of newspaper and a hook for his hand. We went in search in my property with a home built in 42’. About 30 minutes into our hunt he was getting bored. “Ain’t no treasure here.” The detector hit on something. We dug in the hard ground and about 6” down we found a 1927 Standing Liberty quarter.

All I've found in my yard are bits of copper wire, and old Budweiser beer cans. The cans are the old pull tab style. The copper gets tossed in my copper scrap bucket. I do detect an area that was a neighborhood in the 1950's until the Government acquired it and bulldozed all of the houses. Most of the streets are gone, but some of the concrete slabs are still there. Every coin I find is silver, and the pennies are all wheat cents.

I was working on a ranch over 50 years ago, southwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. There was a spot on top of one of the mesas that still had a teepee standing with a shrunken hardened buffalo hide still fastened to a couple of the poles. I was told it was one of Geronimo rendezvous spots. There was also many places along the dry arroyos that you could tell were placer claims. Loved that life, $200 a month room and board.

WC Jameson has been a treasure hunter and author. He wrote a book about lost mines and buried treasures in Arizona. There was a story about stolen gold that was supposed to go to the US troops. The story goes the gold was in a shallow cave somewhere up near Clearwater Creek. It was supposed to be more than 50 million in today's gold. I could not find it LOL.

I found a 1908 Chinese Silver wrapped up in the tidepools in 2012 - After months of searching, finally saw the coin on a chinese coin museum website, with a price over 100k USD, all in chinese. Went back the next day and I couldn't find the page anymore... Took the coin in twice, but the coin collectors don't even know what it is and can't verify it (since it was in the ocean so long)... Anyways, long story short, is that it is valuable, if it were in mint condition. One day I hope to find where it came from.

I ran across a detailed story about the lost cement mine. It was in an old California newspaper from the late 1800s. It appeared in the Sunday paper's magazine section and was presented in 5 installments over 5 Sundays. The last installment told a story about a guy that had found the deposit and barely escaped with his life from a Piute attack and returned to mine it after the Long Valley Piutes had been rounded up and confined to a reservation. It was a riveting story. Someone took that story and wrote a book about it that a lot of guys took to be the definitive description of the deposit's location. Some other guy even announced that he had discovered an old pine tree stump that had scars at the base from where the guy secured his windlass to lift the ore out of the shaft. The problem is the story was fake. The author of the newspaper article stated at the end of the 4th installment that he might write a fifth installment. He said that installment would be a romance based on the facts of the story. Calling it a "romance" meant it was a fictional story. The book failed to mention this fact.

@LuckyBaldwin777 yes I had read a book about it and had a suspection of it being made up. But there were/is a lot of gold mining goings-on in that area and being that I lived and worked in that area for 25 yrs, I spent much of my free time fishing the Owen's river and looking for the mother load. I had no idea what to look for. Jeff has taught me so much more than I tried to teach myself from reading books on geology. But alas I no longer live in that area. I'm in Florida now and way to old to move back and put my newly found information presented by Jeff to go a go at it. However I have since learned that the first gold rush in America was here on the east coast in the Carolinas and Alabama. I m researching some of the data about it and the " my land matters" web site, that Jeff mentioned in one of his videos. It showes a lot of mines in this area. Be wear when using the coordinate given they are correct except the x,y are in reverse order. Thanks for the information about the series of stories printed in the news papers .
@LuckyBaldwin777
@LuckyBaldwin777 Ай бұрын
@williebrother9518 I read that book first and that got me interested. Then I read Mark Twain's account about the Cement Mine in his book "Roughing It." In it, he told about a sample of the ore he saw that was on display in a saloon in Aurora. Nevada. He said that the gold was in nuggets all through the ore like raisins in a fruitcake, and it was very seductive looking. That really got me interested. I was living in Sacramento at the time and spent many rainy winter days in the state library's microfilm room where they have every newspaper printed in California going all the way back to a few years before the rush. I searched through the old papers looking for reports of old gold rush camps that had long been forgotten and had returned to nature. I found those old camps to be very good ground for dredging. On one of those library trips, I stumbled onto that series on the Cement Mine and the Long Valley Piutes. After reading that, it was clear that was the source material for the book. I also discovered several clues to the deposit's location that were left out of the book. There was one account of 2 guys that located the deposit but were attacked that night by the Piutes. One was killed and the other barely escaped. He was finally rescued on the north side of Mono Lake, half dead, crawling on the road to Aurora. As it turned out the reason the Piutes attacked them was because the Cement vein was very close to a grove of ironwood trees, the only ironwood grove for many miles around, and that is what the Piutes made their bows out of. I gave up looking for it because I was doing pretty good dredging near the old camps and figured that was a better use of my time. I'm in S. Arizona now and have other fish to fry. Best of luck to you in the southeast!

Coronado searched for it. 13 cities of cibola. El Dorado. Chief wakara Jeff I been on top looked at the signs. Left my gun my metal detector my knife. My flashlight my ropes. All in my bronco. It's the only reason I was allowed to leave. I'll never go back more to the story. But it's real. Mormon gold coins are 70/30 gold content. Same as Spanish gold bars. @@Askjeffwilliams I'll clarify. I drove up the headwater of a major Utah creek that never reaches an ocean. On top of that mountain is a kings treasure. My bronco was below. Next to the last of the quake aspens. This story is long. Alot of research. As far as I know. I'm the only one that got this close and lived. Only because I went up with no weapons eye witness accounts are written in church history. Of whats inside. Some call it the lost rhoads mines. It's not. They were other mines close by worked by the Spaniards. Legends get confused. But once you dot all the It's and trace it it makes sense. Plus that was 1999. Then i got sent to rebuild a Mormon temple in Illinois. I got back in 2001 was organizing horses and Winchesters to go back. And I got cancer. Colon. Surgery in Payson Utah 3 indians visited me this is scary stuff. Mormons believe 3 cousins to Aztecs called nephite s are immortal. I met them three times. I don't think I'll live long enough now. But it's guarded. They say it's not time. It's the library of Atlantis all on gold and emerald tablets. There. Plus all the 80 pound stacks of gold bars from Spanish. And piles of placer gold. Spanish were driven out in late 1600s. A indian shaman organized the revolt. In old abandoned caves still today burro skeleton with feet cut off so they can't carry gold. And a cannon used to sit in Utah state house Seville Spain 1580. Yup it disappeared after renovations were finished. Hum. They don't want people snooping around

09:07 One way to prevent this in the future is you have to practice fasting. But you can't resist the smells coming from your kitchen. Your wife's cooking is irresistible! An Indian Elder and a descendant of Bandelier told me back in the late 1970's (I was a teenager then) that when Coronado came through NM that he had 40 mules with 40 bars of gold on each mule. Nobody has found it and if they did, they kept their mouth shut. I've always wanted to know what each of those gold bars weighed. I was also thinking what if Cornado buried that gold in an Ice Cave. There is one of those caves located in the El Malpais National Monument about 25 miles SW of Grants NM. My brother when he was alive said there is also an Ice Cave in the Jemez Mountains of NM.

Gold coins from the Donner Party are found occasionally near Donner Lake in the Sierras. All the stories I've heard say that's where they buried their coins after they got stuck in the snow. When they were in dire straits, they sent off 2 men to try and make it over the Sierras and bring back help. They called this party the "Forlorn Hope." One night they discovered a gold vein and took some samples. The next spring after they were rescued, they tried to relocate the deposit but failed. Guys looked for it for years with no success. It became known as the "Lost Emigrant Mine." 50 years later it was finally rediscovered. You can visit the mine today. It's on the Foresthill Divide, near the top of the American River's North Fork Canyon on the south side.

I know a guy that might have found Peg Leg's deposit. He said he found 3 buttes near the Salton Sea. The tallest butte was black and had an old road cut into it that circled the butte and led to the top. He said that at the base of the butte a faint trace of an old road led off into the desert in the direction of Mexico. He explored the butte and found an old adit. He said inside the adit there were ore cart tracks. Next to the tracks were pieces of jet black ore that had fallen out of the carts. He collected some of these and said if you rubbed the surface, the rocks would show a metallic sheen. When he had the ore assayed, it turned out to be rich manganese ore of almost pure manganese oxide. He knew nothing of the old Peg Leg legend, so he didn't look for the black nuggets. I told this story to an old timer I was friends with who lived on his claim on the Merced River between Briceburg and Bagby. When he heard it his face lit up and he told me this story. He said during WWI manganese was a strategic metal needed for the war effort. He said there was a group of miners in Sonora, Mexico, that were selling the US gov't rich manganese ore that came from an unknown source. He said I bet your friend discovered the source of that ore. He said that when the war was over and the US stopped buying ore it makes sense that they just abandoned the mine since they were mining it illegally and that's why they didn't salvage the rails. He then told me if that was Peg Leg's deposit you can be sure those Sonoran miners found the nuggets and took them. That's probably why there was a road to the top. He also said that was before metal detectors were invented and it might be worthwhile to hit that butte with one. He said even if the black nuggets are gone, that manganese mine might still be worth a small fortune. There was one more interesting fact about that butte that my friend told me. He said the top was covered with vegetation and with the heat shimmering off the desert you couldn't see the butte until you were very close to it, except just after sunrise when the sun shone off the black base of the butte. He said from a distance as the sun rose in the sky, the butte disappeared from view.

I’m looking to join a couple of different groups on my gold journey. The first is a local prospecting club. Access to claims, information and knowledgeable hobbyists. The second is joining the premium Patreon group, but I’m debating if it would be worth it to spend the $10/m or $20/m. I’d like to get the 1 on 1 consultation, but being new to the hobby, I’m not sure if it would be needed. Do you happen to have a video explaining a little more about your Consultant Patron membership?
