In September 1974 I was staying at the Tropicana Hotel, right on the front. It was next to the Blenheim where the pub is now. I went up onto the station foot bridge and took photo’s, it looked like this film. We were first alerted to the ferocity as we ate evening meal as ballast was been ripped from the track bed and pebbel dashing the buildings and cars. Don’t ever let anyone tell you these storms are a modern phenomena, there not. I still have one photo. We then drove to Teighnmouth and watched the storm lashing the beach huts and a ship trying to make it into the river. The next day was clear windy but sunny, the storm had damaged the wooden cafe that used to be on the sea wall near wear Dawlish water enters the sea. A guy was combing the beach with a metal detector as the sea had smashed open some slot machines.

@@antonyjh1234 but they are not coming more often, i remember these storms being just like this but far far more often than they are now, this would happen so often back in the 60's and 70's that it was considered a normal day through autumn and winter and if we go back way further to the 40's then we can see storms occured 2 or even 3 times more often than they do now, its just the media likes to try to hype up storms now to make them seem worse or more often when they are clearly not

I live on Riviera Terrace and, sadly, missed this easterly as I was travelling. My wife took some video which she sent me and I was surprised at how extreme this was - a perfect combination of swell direction and wind speed/direction. My wife tells me that sea water was being forced through our double glazing (both first floor sea facing windows) and she removed four pudding bowls of water in all! Thanks for taking this video to show me what I missed (again) ;-)
